Oh poo poo they actually built one of those, I remember drawing something like that a decade ago for a university project except I think I went with a bunch of ball bearings at the bottom.

That's cool if it works.

The same thing can be said to those who tried first person shooters, especially 3d ones like Quake. Takes some time to adjust, and it's easier at a young age.

It took a few years for game developers to get FPS analog sticks right. There's subtle acceleration and target-snapping that feels transparent to the user, but it's practically unusable without it.

Mice had the same problem. Years ago there was a 1-1 correspondence with physical movement and pointer movement, so people often needed to pick up their mouse and move it to the other side of the mouse pad to get the pointer where they wanted. Acceleration-aware movement fixed this, and most people probably don't even realize it's there.

TBH, mouse acceleration is always the very first thing i switch off when using a new / different computer, it's borderline unusable otherwise

Can’t stand mouse acceleration for PC gaming. But then again I’m also the insane PC gamer who always re-maps the right click button on the mouse to jump…

There was probably a point in time when it was actually needed, not quite sure why it's still included as an option and normally enabled by default. I seem to recall there was a rash of games where it was enabled by default and it had to be disabled in the .ini because there was no toggle for it in the options.

Mouse acceleration is perfectly good and excellent for many types of games, when implemented properly. Just not the lovely fixed curve that Microsoft provide with Windows.

There are third-party programs that let you create your own acceleration curve so you can tailor it to your device/surface space/hand movement.
