Any advice for super cheap enclosures? I printed some structural supports yesterday around 4PM and they came out fine, then I printed another set in the evening and there was a bunch of stringing and weak layer adhesion. I'm thinking that the temperature drop in that time was enough to cause problems because the last print that I did later in the evening did the same thing.

That actually reminds me sometimes there are small grow tents at the thrift store because Colorado, I'll see if I can find one that would be big enough for the printer.

Some of the hobbyists out there that suggested something similar over the years (this isn't a very new idea) used photography boxes for their enclosures, but those are fuckoff expensive and I think a tiny greenhouse tent will do the same thing just as well.

Any ender 3 owners have the stock hotend fail on them by claiming to be at temp but actually being low?

I had a clog I couldn't resolve via cold pull, so I swapped the nozzle and the printer still is failing to extrude Hatchbox PLA at 200C. I tried two different rolls, and checked that the extruder is working fine. If I bump the nozzle temp up to 240 it prints, so I'm thinking maybe the thermistor is going bad?

I don't have a good way to double check the temp. I have an all-metal hotend I just hadn't gotten around to installing yet, so I can install that. I'd just like to have some idea what this failure mode is.

No, I haven't had that happen. It could be a number of issues. Maybe the heater cartridge isn't contacting the cavity in the block properly or the wires are damaged. I'd also check the control board end since sometimes they tin the ends of the wires with solder which isn't actually good for the type of screw down clampy terminals they use on the PCB and adds resistance. Crimping a ferrule onto the stranded wires is the best solution.

I have a non-contact IR thermometer that's pretty good. It's not perfectly accurate but if I wave it around the hotend area while the hotend is up to temp it usually shows a max temp that's pretty close to what I set it to. I think it was a $15 one from amazon, this is pretty close to what I have:

If I swap in the all-metal hotend it has its own wiring, so I'll be tearing that all out if it comes to it.

This may not be it, but quite easy to check: Are you sure the temp is really too low? I had something like that when my PTFE tube got too hot and damaged when I played around with a cleaning filament. It got a bit swollen and hindered filament passing with my regular temps but worked with higher ones. After I cut off the bad piece it worked fine again. I can't say for sure, but maybe the higher temp made the tube softer and allowed filament to pass more easy? The damage wasn't really visible on first sight as the walls of the tube only got slightly bigger. May be worth checking out.

Nothing cheaper than cutting up boxes and taping them together.

You could also buy some foamcore if you want to splurge.

I also replaced the capricorn tubing with a new piece when I swapped the nozzle, so that's not it either. It's a weird failure but the only thing I have to go on is that it prints of I set the temp high. I'd assume I was using the wrong filament or something, but I opened a new roll of grey Hatchbox PLA which is what I typically print with and it behaves the same as the black I had in when it first clogged up.

I want to combine pairs 3d models, what is the easiest way to repeatably do that?

They're bases for a war game where facing and base size matters. One part is the outer base. They come in three specific outer diameters by the game rules but otherwise can be changed as I have the scad files. I am interested in a repeatable process because this is how I want to do the bases for many war game models. They look roughly like this:



The other part are the inserts, the artistic parts to put the minis on. They come in all sorts of sizes. I'd need to resize and trim them to fit into the outer bases. Here is an example:



Doing it in the slicer doesn't work because the inserts might poke out below the outer base.
I've tried Blender, using boolean transformations. This has been the best solution I've found but centering the inserts is weirdly finicky and the boolean operators sometimes just don't work.
OpenSCAD can do it but it's even more finicky than Blender.

Printing them as two parts and gluing them isn't out of the question, but doesn't solve the modeling question.

Can you check lower temps? Like 40° with a normal thermometer? If that is already off I'd also suggest the thermistor.

Can't you just make them flatter? View them from the side in Blender, go to edit mode and use Wireframe shading or X-Ray, select all the points at the bottom, press G and drag them upwards?

If both things are round and I want them centered, I usually drag them right to the middle in Blender where the colored axis lines are. Then you can zoom really far in on the upper or bottom side of the circle and move it left/right to center it. Repeat for other axis.

This may all be wrong as I don't understand what/why you're using the boolean operator. I sometimes had problems with that one too. Most times it was because I forgot to click "Include -> Selection Only" when exporting the STL ;) But sometimes it only works for me if I apply the modifier (Ctrl+A).

Newb questions - I've just started the calibration on my 1st printer - Prusa Mini+ and I'm playing with the Z axis height - I think I'm at the point where the corners are a nice 90 degrees and aren't lifting so I think we're about ready to go.

Once you've printed something do you tend to wiggle the print off, or scrape it, or flex the steel sheet ?

Do you let the bed cool down to a certain amount - i.e. room temp or 30C or whatever ? I know I'm not grabbing anything over 50c

So the nitty gritty - Your print head has stopped moving and your print has just completed - whats your usual routine now ?

Okay Amazon got me that IR thermometer over night. With the hot end at 185C, the highest reading the gun gave was 140, and with it at 240C the highest was a momentary blip at 200 but mostly it read around 180.

Do your hot ends read closer to the target than that? I can extrude PLA with it set to 240, which if it's actually somewhere between 180 and 200 makes sense. Ditto to it not extruding set to 200 if it's actually more like 160.

Either way at this point I'm going to install the all metal hot end, but I want to be reasonably confident in my diagnostics just for future reference.

Flex sheet, PLA? I take the sheet off immediately and flex it to pop the part.
Flex PETG? Take the sheet off, put it on the countertop to cool for a minute, then flex and pop it off.
Flex filament? Peel while hot.

At this point I'd first make sure the thermistor is seated properly into the heater block. Failing that, replacing it is a good idea. Especially if you're getting inconsistent readings. It's either failing, or not properly contacting the aluminum.

I wait until the bed temp has dropped to something I'm comfortable handling with my bare hands and then pick the spring steel plate straight up by the tabs.

EDIT: These tabs here:



It will naturally tilt in your hands, but this shouldn't be a problem since the ending G-code moves the bed out from under the arm the hotend rides on.

Once it starts tilting, just slide everything out from under the printhead and towards you. Then put another spring sheet down and wipe it with alcohol and start the next print.

Flex the previous plate to get the print off it, then set it aside to re-use later.

I keep reading this, and it's pretty disheartening given how awesome it would be if it worked well. I think the best thing I've read about it is "it requires a lot of tinkering to get right, but once it's set up, it's pretty great"; much more frequent is "this doesn't deserve the 'Prusa' label because it's a nightmare". Anyway, I'd be interested in your thoughts, since I'm still toying with the idea of picking one of these up if Prusa does free shipping for Black Friday again this year. I can stand some tinkering but if it's straight-up not ready I'll probably pass.

Prusa isn't pursuing the current MMU line at all, as far as I know. They've even teased a tool-changing setup for their upcoming Prusa XL printer.

The Pallate and it’s newer versions also looks like an absolute loving nightmare to get working right.

Unfortunately automatic multi color/material printing using only 1 print head has too many possible failure points to be 100% failproof.

I’ve been having decent luck printing patterns in different colors on the first layer as a separate STL file, then printing the counterpart file over the top of it.

But even that dumb way of doing it has given me a good handful of failures and frustrations.

IR reflectivity index difference between polished stainless steel and human skin is less than 5% IIRC

Completed my 1st ever print - benchy of course. I'm totally blown away by the quality.

I've never actually seen a 3d printer in the flesh before, and the only 3d objects I've ever seen were years ago and kinda crappy.

I'm thrilled with the possibilties.

Only negative so far is the electronics box is far too small to comfortably get the wires in - if it was 1/3 bigger then it all be very comfortable.

If the wires aren't fitting then you have the wrong wires going through the wrong openings in the box.

I'd also prefer something smaller rather than larger because table space is at a premium, as long as it can accommodate a Mars Pro build plate and/or flexplate plus attached prints.
Also, are there any limitations with using a wash/cure that would push me towards another DIY solution? I'm currently curing my prints under water, that's still an option with one of these setups, right? Also, i

I have the elegoo wash/cure and it's fantastic. I honestly think most of them are about the same.

My biggest limitation is the volume of prints I put through my machine, and the fact that 1 machine has 2 functions. I constantly need to swap it between the washing bucket and curing plate.

I have a wash+cure coming in the mail which is 2 large seperate machines and it honestly looks perfect. It's sized to handle Saturn scale prints, but just having 2 seperate machines for washing and curing would be a game changer. Not sure how water curing would work on these things but someone's inevitably done it

I've been hearing about ethanol being a good route, but can't find it any cheaper than alcohol. If I could get things less than a $1 a litre then that would be perfect

Through the course of my printing work I use all sorts of different 3D programs because I find each one is better at certain things than the others. I'm going to echo cakesmith handyman's suggestion of using 3D Building that comes with windows. Surprisingly really good at mashing objects together (and other boolean operations).

I have the little elegoo wash and cure and the large anycubic wash and cure. If you're not printing tons then there's probably little difference to worry about, but if you print a lot then the turnwheel on the anycubic machine is so much better of a design. Also, what do you mean by "curing prints under water"?

So I've found a decent solution (I think). Costco has 99% IPA for $12/2 litres, which is cheaper than anywhere else I can find (even business supply places like uline are ridiculously more expensive). I have a pickle bucket that has 2 litres of IPA in it and that is where my prints go for a bath initially. This takes off 95% of the uncured resin. After a nice long soak in there they get rinsed in a water bucket to clean off all the messy residue. Then they go into the wash and cure bucket and have a 10 min cycle in the machine to take off the last bits of uncured resin. This second IPA bath stays clear for a long time because very little uncured resin is getting in there.

Once my pickle bucket has become more goop than liquid I clean it out and move the wash and cure IPA into that and a fresh batch of IPA into the wash and cure. With the huge amounts I print I find this only needs to be swapped out once a week (that's with 4 printers going pretty much 2-3 times a day everyday). $12/week for hundreds of prints is a pretty small expense imo. The bucket cleaning is a huge pain in the rear end though but I think that's a problem no matter what you end up doing.
