A whole book about Space Truckin' would rule because I would love tons of "ways to encounter the xenomorphs and survive/only be maimed instead of killed" that involve so stupid it just might work improvised stuff instead of breaking out the big guns

Forgetting what they're actually planning, an expansion of some kind focused on androids/more in-depth stuff about player character androids might be interesting since there's so much background info about them. I like the part in the Colonial Marines book that goes through the history of various government regulations around them and stuff.

Its quite interesting comparing the two most recent proper alien games, Isolation and Fire Team.

Isolation takes everything about the alien from Alien, it's a constant lurking danger you can only hope to avoid. You can not defeat it, at best you can simply survive it. Its impossibly tough bio-mechanical hide seems to shrug off all weapons, and fire only seems to temporarily spook it. If it sees you, you're almost certainly dead. If it touches you, you are 100% dead. Its motives are unknown and its intelligence inscruitible.

Fireteam of course bases its xeno's on Aliens, but takes it to an incredible extreme for the sake of gameplay. So long as you have ammo you can easily clown on thousands of these stupid mindless bugs. They are simply bugs acting on a basic sort of hive mentality, once you understand their instincts and level of intelligence they're fairly predictable with known motives that could all fit on a handy safety pamphlet. You can be grappled by an alien and just push them off, you can avoid their clumsy attacks by moving around at a light-jog speed and maybe throw in some tactical rolling. Their acid just kinda stings a little but is of little threat to you or the environment.

Its specially jarring because fireteam feels almost like a sequel to Isolation in its loving inclusion of Working Joes and Seegsun stuff. Both are good games, both are overflowing with love for the franchise and its lore, but depict incredibly different versions of the alien.

I agree on most points, but according to the Fireteam devs the intended difficulty for players is Intense - acid damage is A Big Deal, Aliens deal more damage and can take more punishment, and friendly fire is on (making flamethrowers a real questionable gamble). The Alien Drone (the thing closest to the creature from Isolation) can shrug off a lot of punishment and uses hit-and-run tactics, so it’s somewhat in line with its depiction in Isolation - the one in Isolation dangerous for sure, but you also never have the opportunity to have 3 people shooting at it with fully automatic weapons like you do in Fireteam, and even then it’s still a big threat in Fireteam.

Neo Rasa posted:

It’s playable if you like Five Nights at Freddy’s style games, and it “brings closure” in the sense that Amanda gets rescued and doesn’t die (she also comes back in some comics set after Blackout as well) but nothing ever wraps back around to her death as described in ‘Aliens’ and explains why the Company would let a woman who repeatedly wreck their operations and had multiple encounters with xenomorphs die of old age (or why she would just give up searching for her mom after she knows crazy poo poo happened to her).

Allegedly the comics were going to address some of that, but not only were the later Amanda Ripley comics kind of lovely, but the author (Brian Wood) was outed as a sex pest and Dark Horse terminated all of his books. And then the Disney acquisition happened and now Marvel has the Aliens license and hasn’t shown any indication of returning to the Amanda Ripley plot line.

IDK, I thought her story was tasteful. She went into the same line of work as her mother because of her disappearance, right? Trying to find closure? Doesn't Samuels outright say this to her in the first lines of the game? The Anesiadora literally happens on the Nostromo's flight records and finds her way to the derelict on LV426, isn't this what peaks Amanda's interest in the first place? I think it's a nice way to tie things together, definitely makes the game feel more grounded in the narrative than if you were playing some random person. Fireteam on the other hand, well everyone knows Marines are expendable, dime-a-dozen cannon fodder.

Tangentially related but I really like the voice actor for Amanda. She did a great job sounding enough like Ripley, and she really sells the desperation and fear with a few lines.

The two in Covenant were different, so this checks out.

Speaking of related, I didn’t catch this at first but Colonel Shipp in Fireteam is the protagonist from the fairly recent YA novel ‘Alien: Echo’ (and one of the later intel items you can find gives Shipp’s backstory and references Echo).

Also some of the lore in Fireteam references a Commandant Vaughn, she’s a character from the recent Colonial Marines book for the RPG.

Yeah that's the problem with videogames in general - unless they're trying to be very scary or realistic they have to fall into the power fantasy of blasting through zillions of mooks. It was pretty amazing that videogames have been aping Aliens for decades but it wasn't until Alien Isolation showed up that anyone actually copied Ripley.

I remember a friend of mine complaining that Call of Duty or Battlefield had released a DLC where you play as ze Germans, and he was very upset that it fell into the German Ubermensch mentality as you play as super-soldier who kills hundreds of Americans and so on...

But, it's a Call of Duty (or Battlefield?) game. I don't think they know how to show WW2 without you becoming a super soldier who mows down hundreds of enemies. Anything aiming at realism would have you sitting in a hole and getting blown apart by artillery from kilometers away. The guys who died staring a Nazi in the eyes were a minority.

Don't you tell me my business again.
Man, I wish Fireteam wasn't totally co-op based since I tend to dislike that sort of thing but have fond memories of Alien Trilogy and even Alien Resurrection. I recall REALLY wanting to get into the latter but kept bouncing off the controls.

Controls which are now standard for FPS but which I couldn't deal with at the time.

I'd really just love a sequel to Alien: Isolation but one that ramps up the combat some. Keep the same tension, fear and sense of being totally out powered but ramp it up with weapons and actually being able to fight. Some sort of middle ground between Fireteam and Isolation would really do the trick. Left4Dead reskinned with waves of aliens doesn't really do it for me. Not team based but maybe your'e a Marine who got separated from her squad.

Give me some arms and ammo and maybe let me weld closed some doors/vents and find ways to activate turrets or set traps but do it to where, like, 5-10 aliens is a very serious problem even though I can still kill those fuckers if I do it right. Like, allow me to manipulate the environment to improve my odds along with blocking access to ammo or weapons behind key cards and poo poo. Keep the improvised weapon crafting. Isolation reminded a little bit too much of Outlast and after a while I really wanted to be able to fight.

Also, usually crafting in games can get tedious but I really loved how Isolation handled it. Figure I'd mention that.

The greatest sensual pleasure there is is to know the desires of another!

Fun Shoe
The thing about Left4Dead was that, at least for me, half the fun was playing the zombies and trying to find cool ways to take down the humans. If Fireteam had that element to it I think it could've been 10X better, for instance Left4Dead had like a Leaper Zombie that could take these big flying leaps and if you managed to land on a human you would pin them and do tons of damage. It's a mechanic I think would've worked perfectly for a xenomorph, and then obviously you have a huge Tank-like unit and one that can snatch people and drag them away from the group, etc. It could've worked really well but they didn't even attempt that for Fireteam which is a shame.

Aliens: Colonial Marines kind of had what both of you are talking about, a survival mode where it wasn’t crazy swarms of Aliens, and an asymmetrical versus mode that let you play as Alien specialists to wreck the Marines.

For all its faults, the multiplayer for A:CM was pretty neat.

Edit— the trailers for that game were pretty great overall

There are some praiseworthy parts of that game - the level design is visually interesting and feels like logical extensions of what’s in the movies (and it should, Syd Mead consulted on the game’s design), and the weapon design and customization is cool (and some of the weapons and their designs would actually end up being recycled in the comics). A lot of the Alien designs were pretty cool, too.

It’s just that the game’s plot is kind of trash and a lot of the core gameplay is pretty jank, in no small part due to the Alien AI being broken due to sheer programmer incompetence. It also doesn’t help that the game had one of the most insanely dishonest marketing campaigns ever and Gearbox outsourced huge swaths of the game to other developers while pocketing the production money from Sega and funneling it into Borderlands 2. The game garnered a crazy amount of backlash mostly because of the dishonest marketing, not because it’s absolutely unplayable dogshit or something. I think if the gameplay previews had more reflected the finished product then the reception wouldn’t have been nearly as abysmal; the game would probably have been seen as mediocre-to-bad and essentially forgettable.

The PC version of the game was semi-salvaged by fan mods that fixed (and upgraded) the AI and polished the graphics quite a bit, but that doesn’t fix the plot.

What’s extra funny though is there was a recent one-shot comic from Marvel called “Aliens: Aftermath” that has a somewhat similar plot to Colonial Marines and its so fuckin’ bad that it makes A:CM’s plot seem like goddamn Shakespeare by comparison.

Randy Pitchford is a used car salesman bullshit person of a human being so anything he's involved in will have a sheen of false advertising on it no matter what the reality is.

But in this case it is reality, they showed off and hyped up quite a bit of bullshit footage that was way off from how the actual game is executed. There was an actual lawsuit against Sega and Gearbox over it and everything. IIRC Gearbox itself was dropped from the lawsuit completely after some time and it was then just against Sega.

The trailers all showed gameplay and graphics that were radically better than the finished product, and Gearbox demoed playable sections of the game at E3 and PAX that ended up not being in the finished game at all, and were developed strictly for those shows.

https://youtu.be/wKiemSUKczA

Like massive swaths of that video are just full-on not in the game, and the bits that are look dramatically worse.

https://youtu.be/1EW2PsCGA7g

It was a massive shitshow which Randy Pitchford has never owned up to, and even led to a couple lawsuits (one between Sega and Gearbox when Sega learned that their Colonial Marines money wasn’t being spent on Colonial Marines and was instead being funneled into Borderlands, and a class action suit against Gearbox/Sega for dishonest marketing practices).

I defended the poo poo out of the game leading up to the release and ended up having to eat a poo poo ton of crow once the game came out.

The collectors edition did come with a really cool statue of an Alien fighting a powerloader (again, depicting a moment from one of the gameplay demos that’s nowhere to be found in the final game), so there’s that I guess!

I've never heard of "The Hashtag Show" but this sounds dumb enough to be true. Hopefully not.

Having got their hands on the Alien franchise thanks to the Fox merger, Disney is wasting no time in relaunching the legendary sci-fi universe once again. The last movie in the series was 2017’s underwhelming Alien: Covenant, though, and it seems the studio is keen to distance themselves from that. In fact, according to the latest intel, Disney has gone so far as to reject creator Ridley Scott’s script for a reboot and is moving forward with a fresh one.

According to That Hashtag Show, who usually provide reliable info, the studio has hired unknown writers to come up with a different screenplay after they found Scott’s too “convoluted,” As such, the reboot will do away with Sigourney Weaver’s Ellen Ripley and any threads from the more recent Alien films. Instead, the new lead will be Fiona, described as a “Mary Elizabeth Winstead type,” the science officer on board a ship of colonists searching for a new homeworld.

Now, THS’ plot breakdown goes a lot deeper than that (spoilers incoming) and says that at least a couple of alien eggs will hatch on the ship and cause carnage. The twist is that Fiona is able to capture one of the Facehuggers and incubate it, growing it to adulthood in a tank. This results in a “good” Xenomorph, one that’s loyal to Fiona and the humans.]

The big showdown of the movie will allegedly pit the good Xenomorph against a bad one, thereby delivering some unique alien vs. alien action. The good one will sacrifice itself to take out the bad one and keep the crew safe, but the film will end with another egg revealed to be attached to the ship, leaving the audience to ponder whether this will be a good or bad alien.

Disney is said to be very keen on the simplicity of this plot, although THS notes that the breakdown is based on an early draft, so it could get more complex. If it does well, though, the studio hopes to release a new Alien flick every other year.
