Because it's not a mechanical gauge connected to a fuel float like in the 60s, it's a servomotor controlled by the dash computer.

Adding mechanical end stops would make it more expensive for no real benefit.

Is "starting fluid" something with an actual widespread legitimate use, or is it like whip-its and glass roses where the main purpose is to get people high and there's just enough of a light veneer of legitimacy to allow it to be sold? I'd never heard of it before seeing it in this thread and just did a cursory google search, so I'm genuinely curious.

I believe it's used in large diesel engines, possibly in colder weather.

My dad told me to never ever use is in my first car (which was a diesel sedan).

It was indispensable in the age of the carburetor.

It's less useful today, but back in the days of mechanical fuel pumps and weak batteries it was helpful. Sometimes it took a lot of cranking to get fuel pressure and get things flowing and you could run down a battery pretty quickly, particularly in cold weather. Starting fluid gave the engine something to burn while the fuel system got primed and up to pressure, saving your battery and starter.

sometimes you have to give a 1962 international travelall a little encouragement on a cold morning, or if the battery isn't quite up to snuff it helps

It at least used to be used on cars pretty regularly, especially in the cold, but with modern fuel injected engines there’s less call for it.

I don’t think most of the stuff at auto stores even contains ether now, though, so while it may have once been an attractive target for abuse, it’s probably mostly used for its intended purpose.

Using starting fluid regularly on diesels can develop a dependency for it. Not as much of an issue now, but an 80s diesel pickup or kenworth is a different story. It's truck drugs.

IIRC, it also burns like ultra mega hot too, which is also good for diesel engines in cold weather since they basically rely on heat for starting/ignition.

At -35C to -45C, just about any big diesel engines needs a snort of starting fluid to stand a chance of firing up. Even then, we still spend most of the work day trying to get all the poo poo fired up. I firmly believe that at those temperatures people should just be told to stay home, nothing gets loving done and hydraulic lines wear and break nonstop.

I thought this was like a joke about people huffing it, but it's legit. Once they're addicted, they won't start for anything else. No amount of glow plug or warm temperature will get 'em going. Kills the piston rings and thus the compression.

We used it in potato guns back in my younger years. I don't know how legitimate that is but it made everything burn and that was fun.

This. Even new lawnmowers etc have cheap tiny carburetors with tiny passages that don't take much to clog up.

Won't start? Pull the air filter off to ensure it has air, spray some starter fluid into the intake and try to start it. If it runs, congratulations. If it runs for a second and then dies, you're not getting any fuel. Try a few more times to see if running on ether will suck the clog all the way through. If it doesn't do anything, change the spark plug.

He took a bunch of time off to write an academic paper about his discoveries about it. "Clicksping Clips," a secondary channel, has had regular updates. The paper changed the very understanding of the Antikythera mechanism. It isn't a minor thing: the mechanism doesn't track the sun, it tracks the moon. That throws centuries of research in the drain.

Also, the dude films in a basically a walk in closet.

I had no idea he had this secondary channel, with regular vids. And considering it has only 70k subscribers to his main channels 600k, it looks like no one else did either.

Stuff like this makes me feel dumb as hell. How in the heck do you get from a clean sheet to this, it's incredible

I mean logically I guess it's not really clean sheet, it has to be somewhat iterative and I'm just not seeing the century plus of incrementally less poo poo bottle making machines due to not being in the industry, but still

Here in sunny England we have a real problem with a HGV driver shortage. This is due to a mix of Brexit, Covid and drivers realising they can get the same wages for way less hours working elsewhere.

You'd think the problem is easy to solve, pay the drivers more and give them benefits befitting of a job that has you working 12-14 hour days right?

The first idea our wonderful government had was to add on exactly one hour to the legal driving time. Yes you can now drive a multi ton vehicle, while tired as gently caress, even longer!

This didn't work, to the shock of no one.

This is the new idea:

https://www.commercialfleet.org/news/latest-news/2021/09/10/hgv-driving-test-overhauled-to-tackle-driver-shortage

quote:

A new streamlined test means drivers will only need to take one test to drive both a rigid and articulated lorry, rather than having to take two separate tests (spaced three weeks apart). This, according to the Government, will make around 20,000 more HGV driving tests available every year and mean drivers can gain their licence and enter the industry more quickly.

Tests will also be made shorter by removing the ‘reversing exercise’ element – and for vehicles with trailers, the ‘uncoupling and recoupling’ exercise – and having it tested separately by a third party. This part of the test is carried out off the road on a manoeuvring area and takes a significant amount of time. Testing such manoeuvres separately will free up examiner time, meaning they can carry out another full test every day.

Car drivers will no longer need to take another test to tow a trailer or caravan, allowing roughly 30,000 more HGV driving tests to be conducted every year.
