Aw man, I guess I forgot about them once OS X got enough screenshotting functionality that I no longer needed Snapz Pro X

I said good. No flight simulator is good. (Unless you count Corncob 3D as a simulator.)

I ordered Corncob 3D randomly from one of those mail order PD disk places back then. You only had the name of the game and a few words of description to go by. Sometimes you found something good, mostly you got crap. Corncob was one of the better ones.

Hey! I'm doing that with my IIfx! Finding the 64pin RAM that beast needs though has been...interesting

On a positive note, I'm now running Classilla on my OG G4 Tower (500Mhz of power!) and OS 9.2.1.

As of early 2021 there was one guy selling brand new RAM for the IIfx on eBay. He's got a big thread over on 68kmla.
If he's not selling anymore then good luck, that RAM was unobtainium before he started making it again.

This is the guy: https://www.ebay.com/itm/234168096212

He's been warning for a while that supplies/motivation are running out, though he did say the previous batch would the last one as well. Make of that what you will, but I wouldn't advise you to wait since this is basically the only source of RAM in any real quantity.
FWIW I've yet to come up with a case where 64 MB wouldn't cut it (A/UX as a server could be one case where you'd want more than 64 MB).

Note: the startup RAM check will take several minutes on the stock IIfx ROM with these amounts of RAM.
This replacement ROM https://www.bigmessowires.com/mac-rom-inator-ii/ bypasses the check and will boot much faster, it also provides a basic built in System ROM-disk useful in those cases where you'd otherwise need some kind of boot floppy.
Has stuff like HD SC Setup and ResEdit built in.

Oh I have all the RAM, I ended up scavenging it from ACER Laser Printers (the only other piece of tech that used that form factor) and jumpering a pin

i run all my old macs with a modest amount of RAM just because that memory test is so annoying and they crash so often, it's really dumb that the mac rom doesn't give you any progress indicator while it's testing

Posted about these in the PYF purchases thread -- got a couple of Seiko pyramid speaking clocks sold as broken on ebay. Their gimmick was that you push the top of the pyramid and a voice will read out the time. Old hat now, but a first at the time (1984).

One was fairly easy to fix by re-soldering a few wires:

The other one was beyond repair (corroded PCB, courtesy of a battery leak in days past) so now it houses a tiny MP3 player that's more or less one of those greeting card mechanisms. Had to put this on it:

I had one of those Mouse Systems ones on a Sun box in the lab around 1999. It was hilarious because the metal grid mousepad was almost square, and rotating it 90 degrees would make it just go all fucky and sort of work but not really usably. Someone who didn't get what was going on would just swear and fume and assume the mouse was broken somehow.

We haven't had that spirit here since 1969.

We had one of these when I was a kid, and it was a throwback even then. My dad picked it up at a garage sale and put it in his basement workshop so he could watch the game while he was working on something.

The space helmet aesthetic was undeniably cool looking, but I think its actual function was to obscure how small and crappy the black-and-white screen actually was.
