I once worked at a company that made network hardware. In the lab we had a bunch of high-speed (for 2001! Probably 400 ambit!) very-sensitive-to-ESD prototype linecards for the routers on the shelf

The cleaner came in to clean off the lab and was veery diligent about dusting off everything in there with a feather duster, including the shelf with said line cards

They brought in a cleaning firm that knew about cleaning electronics labs after losing a whole batch of cards to incidents like that

I have a subcontractor who covers the geographical region, which includes where I work plus a load of other site which are nothing to do with me. So he comes by now and then, mainly to just do routine check type stuff on his servers.

He constantly asks me for access to the server room key and I keep saying no - he keeps saying he has the clearance and it's ok in the other places he covers. I've always just felt there is just something not right about him and I wouldnt be comfortable with him in my server room on his own so I just say we are a different company to the other places you go and we dont want to accept that risk, sorry. (kinda true, I havent asked the actual risk owner I just made the call myself, anyway...)

He came to site, didnt tell me he was coming - he usually pre-arranges to get the key from me, he couldnt find me for the server room key, so got the duty manager to let him in with the master. Turns out, he was replacing a UPS, so took mine out of the cab where we share some equipment, plugged all his stuff into the new UPS and just left my stuff unplugged.

Everyone goes nuts looking for me so it became quickly apparent I'm headed for the server room - Obviously not knowing any of this, seeing wires unplugged was totally random so by the time I sorted it then started trying to find out wtf had gone on, the guy had just scarpered and left site.

I spoke to the manager that represents that contractor on site and he was like "ah yea, engineer mentioned that might have happened" - I pointed out if he does something like that he needs to let someone from our company know - even if you cant find me tell the duty manager please!!!

I mean, I had an engineer and a manager between them who knew something had happened in the server room and they knew equipment wasnt right (stuff being off might have been a clue) and their reaction to that was to leave site / wait for me to come looking for them. Didnt even log a ticket or send an email (both services were not impacted by this)

Having reflected on that, if I wasn't leaving, I'd put a code lock on the door so that the duty manager couldnt get in with the key.

Our company sent out an employee survey email, to some employees.

A user with too much time on his hands has been emailing IT directly (instead of helpdesk or using the phish alert button)

quote:

This “looks” legitmate……..

……………But it could also be “click bait”

But I don’t click on any imbedded links without IT MANAGERS “OK”

Please advise if this is legit or Phishing click bait?

Not “opening” anything without IT “OK” first

P.S.

The COMPANY [ or COMPANY subcontractor ] company [ I assume in Italy ]

that is sending out these survey’s would be wise to go through our IT dept FIRST.

It would be seen as legit if it came from IT MANAGER

It might be wise to forward that to Italy 😊 ?

Next one:

quote:

So is IT in Italy aware that they are spreading “Phish-bait” all over their global e-mail system?

Or if this was some kind of “click-bait test”

How are we supposed to know that they are real?

Who knows, these could be Communist Chinese Hackers?

These type of inquiries should come from [ through ] IT MANAGE

Not some unknown entity outside the outside our IT system.

Rep-Trak [ and the IT people in Italy ] need to get their “knuckles-wrapped”

I mean, how are you supposed to know what's real these days...

It wouldn't hurt for IT to send out an "expect this bullshit" warning ahead of time, but also it looks like you might be able to divert that user's attention into some anti-racist training if you want to get properly maliciously compliant with it.

I was just looking at it and I suddenly got this urge to get inside. No, not just an urge - more than that. It was my destiny to be here; in the box.
A student from my old job just reported to me that the new IT Director replaced the web filter I put in place with another one and then promptly didn't configure anything.

He messed up the filtering rules out of the gate and only blocked legitimate websites the students would need.

It took him three weeks to get it sorted out and to this day they can't actually open up Outlook web. It also is still partially blocking three services the science department requires students to use when using WiFi.

But you CAN buy guns and look at porn. The filtering only works correctly on a physical connection, which in the dorms have to be manually enabled due to lack of available switch space.

Students have had requests sitting with him to turn on the ports in their room since he started.

He has called me a TON of times to ask about admin passwords on the macs and vendor info. I tell him it's in the documentation I left him to which he responds that he has misplaced his copy, the executive director shredded his copy when he left, and they didn't have a working backup of the file server due to a disk failure I warned them about before I left.

I'm the only one with documentation about that place and it's because I still have my notes scribbled in a notepad in my glove compartment.

I'm going to start charging them.

I've discussed it in the past, but I really care about that school and I'm willing to go above and beyond to see it succeed. It's the only good thing coming out of my home state and the students there aren't going to have another opportunity like that anywhere else. My entire conundrum was being stuck working for poo poo people in an organization I care about on a deeply fundamental level.

So I'm willing to do what I can to help them keep offering opportunities to students.

But at this point, this guy is so inept I can't keep trying to save his job. I came into that job with zero documentation and did the work to figure it out and make it my own.

I've stopped taking his calls so we'll see how long he lasts.

This is the funnest part. The Executive Director and principal got job offers somewhere and loving evaporated in the middle of the year and didn't help them find a replacement or give anyone a heads up at all. So there's no leadership and the place is in disarray

One time I had to solo mount a UPS in the rack because they wouldn't approve spending $250 to hire someone to come in and help me. They aren't paying me poo poo lol.

But I also escaped the south, live in a much better place and make twice as much as I was back home (hell I'm making more than the director did at this point), and get to work from home in my pajamas deciding the fates of technicians and changing passwords.

I couldn't give less of a poo poo about making them feel bad. I'm doing way better and I got some fun stories out of my time at the television station and the school.
