That's right, kids, take lots of drugs, leave the universe behind, and pilot Enlightenment Voltron out into the cosmos to meet Alien Jesus.

Edge Studios has clarified in their Discord that this is not the end of L5R Fifth Edition, it's an alternate product line, sort of like how Cubicle 7 had both The One Ring and Adventures in Middle-Earth running in parallel (and, I gather, Fria Ligan is planning to do now that they have the license).

e; I'm gonna be honest and it's kind of a conversational swerve, but I really hope the whole "going to cons and getting shitfaced drunk" thing dies out sooner rather than later. I know there's been more pushback against it in recent years but it's honestly a little hosed that there's a pervasive attitude that cons aren't complete without some serious inebriation, not talking "have some drinks with friends" but the sort of "trying too hard to get hammered" sorta thing because man does it seem to be the source of a lot of really terrible decisions and behavior.

Isn't theosophy a large part of where Hitler got his aryans from?

Bits of it found their way into a ton of fantasy writing. IIRC the akashic records are part of it, for instance. Their whole thing was taking ~~mysterious oriental wisdom~~ and mangling it into the ~~secret teachings~~ of the ~~wise ancient masters~~ (in tibet) for the western audience.

Wikipedia tells me they inspired gandhi so lol I guess it's a land of 19th century racist contrasts.

Possibly it's also possible that he copied it from the same Edward Bulwer-Lytton pulp novel the theosophists did. Because funny thing Lytton's book Vril actually predates any "real" theosophists despite containing all of the same stuff minus the super humans being white people. As stealing pop culture, applying a racist coat of paint, and then claiming you made it is something fascists have been doing since before the word fascism existed.

The author of that is a friend of mine and has done a ton of research. Pablo Vazquez is super cool and knows a lot about the topic. The pdf acknowledges the racist history of Theosophy but focuses on the modern PoC communities that have adopted the Ascended Masters and made the religion their own.

This is part of why Theosophy is complicated! Modern takes on it are often very far from its Victorian origins, which are undeniably super racist.

So Theosophy has racist elements and racists have drawn inspiration from it but it's not, like, ALL about racism, if that makes sense.

Its core belief is that the further back in time you go, the closer you get to real religion.

This is a good listen, iirc, with an emphasis on how it influenced pseudo-archeology. Jeb Card loves talking about this poo poo.

I thought the whole "Aryan" thing was because European archaeologists and anthropologists got a good enough handle on India's place in the archaeological record, realized that there was a thriving, sophisticated culture there while Europeans were still doing the stone knives and bearskins hunter/gatherer thing, and concluded that no, there's no way a bunch of dark skinned savages could have invented civilization, it must have come from a group of hitherto-unsuspected white people living in the far north who invaded India and imposed it on them. It was an early dry-run for later theories of how aliens must have built the pyramids.

Indo-Aryan theory is…complicated and hard to explain but a lot of the ideas behind the rise of 1880s to 1940s Aryan White People racism was aggressive misunderstanding of pop science stuff. What’s actually true is…still being figured out.

The host is kinda bowled over that he's talking to such a famous and influential guy, and to be fair, it's a pretty big coup to get The Mage Guy on your very first episode, so it's a pretty soft and friendly interview.

But pretty quickly, Brucato gets off on a tangent about why he's called Satyr and not Phil, and how it's been rough because his friend Coyote isn't doing too well, and you can just see the Siouxsie and the Banshees poster and the side table covered in Amy Brown faerie statues, like the past 25 years hadn't really happened but they kept getting older for some reason...

You only had to look at his (dreadful, terrible, cringe-inducing, kinda gross) music RPG to learn he was a man stuck in time. He dedicated the book in part to the DJs who were flipping the bird to authority by playing certain bands and some of the bands he thought fought the power were very funny.

Yeah, you could make a case that 3 (iirc) of the members of the band are openly homosexual and they rose to fame in a world far more hostile to their identities, and have that tie into the power of music to allow people to transgress against society and be themselves in ways they normally couldn't. However, you'd probably need to actually explain that, and let's be honest, the RPG is probably more about how the bands he liked in his teens are cool and subversive (because he is cool and subversive) not an actual exploration of anything.

I'd give the B-52s credit for being their own thing and completely out of step with any other musical movement of their time. It's not like there was an entire scene full of bands built on surf-rock guitars, girl-group harmonic vocals, new wave synths, and kitschy 50s hairdos that they just happened to emerge from. They were pretty much sui generis, forging their own path.

But yeah, the real reason they're in there is that Phil liked them when he was in college, therefore they are by definition the peak of what real important music is.
