And of course the solution isn't as simple as we'd like it to be. Oh well. I guess we have to eat the rich!

The second home owners probably don't, but the people in those communities who are angry about second homes absolutely do want low-income people to get houses, and keep them. Because that would be us.

It's a shifting talking point isn't it.

'Lets build millions of new homes' = 'Thats a foolish use of money we had enough homes we just need to use the the current stock better'

'Ok lets use the existing stock' = 'this is stupid it's all in the wrong place and the locals won't like it and the owners have rights'

'lets do nothing then'

Yeah, the people who counter every single proposal to reform the housing market with a: "Yes, but..." are usually the people who happen do be doing very nicely out of the current system and don't actually want anything about that to change.

It should come as no surprise to anyone that Tyldesley is a massive TERF, by the way.

Is there a wealth of empty homes sitting around pristine and unused? No, except maybe some bits of central London or Cornwall

Is homelessness a government choice that could be removed if we put effort into it? Yes, as shown at the beginning of the pandemic. While that was often hotel rooms rather than full houses, it still shows that homelessness is a choice, not a nessesity. (there are further issues that come with this, but not unsolvable ones.)

You're confusing homelessness with rough sleeping - obviously the latter is a subset of the former and people living on the streets should take highest priority but they're really only a tiny percentage of the total. The vast majority of homeless people have a roof over their head - it's just that roof is leaking, or is in a B&B, or is a single bedroom for 4 kids.

The big problem is that once they're off the streets they basically disappear as far as politics is concerned, so nothing ever changes because while the solution - building a shitload of old-fashioned council housing - is actually easy (and surprisingly cheap), the political cost of obliterating the BtL market is far too high.

Possibly controversial take - the early series of only fools and horses before it was just Christmas specials and del boy became a yuppie caricature were actually good and an accurate and sympathetic portrayal of trying to get by in a country that has no interest in helping you

Would be very funny if the government commissioned more shows about the misery of living under conservatism because they missed the point and just saw 'british' and 'mostly white faces'

I don't know that anyone here hates on OFAH itself, just the 30 years of misty-eyed nostalgic tributes to it. And yeah obviously it went really crap at the end there.

And agreed there's a big gap for socialist realist comedies

I'm more confused by the idea of what would constitute a program made by British TV network in Britain using British actors that is not "distinctively British".

They list Fleabag, Gogglebox, Downton Abbey, Bake Off and The Bodyguard. So they're going to make it law that TV companies have to carry on making the same kind of programs they're already making?

John Sullivan should have ended the show when Lennard Pearce died. Not because Granddad was a particularly good character - Uncle Albert was actually funnier and could be used to move the plot along in more interesting ways than Granddad - but because by that point the show was already getting stale and the only way of fending that off - bringing in Raquel and Cassandra, having Rodney get a job outside of Del's influence - killed off the stuff that made it not just another sitcom.

Also pre-poo poo OFAH was at least vaguely cosmopolitan; it's notable that the Christmas Special era got a lot, lot whiter and the spinoffs chose settings where an all-white cast is much less jarringly unrealistic than a show set in 90s Peckham where the only person darker than Donald Trump was Denzil and even he was mixed-race.

It really is poo poo though. I like to try and get a cross section of views so I took out a £1 trial to The Spectator for a couple of months but it was just so powerfully bad that I couldn't carry it on.

Just low effort, badly written and poorly sourced shite.

The last thing I saw there was some twat with an insufferable cartoon av (turn monitor on etc) going on about how Nadine Dorries would fight the culture war because she was an advocate for abstinence only education for girls.

Possibly a frank admission that she's on the side that believes in bollocks that doesn't work, unless she actually thought that through and she's going to fight the culture wars on the queer side by making all boys mandatory gay.

She has not thought that, nor anything, through.

I can't read that as anything other than private military company and wondered if I'd missed the spin-off set in Rhodesia (which I wouldn't put past 70s British TV).

They mean full of white people.

Edit: I mean if they really wanted to ruffle some feathers they would demand that a certain percentage of the films shown in cinemas in Britain show films filmed and made by British production companies and British distributors and give them massive government funding like they do in France but that would undermine the way money is already made and it might let a new Ken Loach appear so gently caress that poo poo, lets just do some dogwhistles about white people on the TV.

OFAH was good enough for another season or two after Uncle Albert came in, but if it was a choice of everything we got or stopping after season three then it definitely should have come to an end earlier.

Rodney was the biggest issue, they just didn't know what to do with him as he got older. He got severely Flanderised as it went on, remaining the same naive child but older and moodier, and Cassandra was a bland, flavourless paste of a character and I have no idea why they persisted with her or thought she was a good counterpart to Rodney.
