https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cKqxBGmZrEQ so sumo can seem kinda weird and odd and just big overweight dudes slamming into each other, but if you get into it you start to see there's a whole bunch more to it. It's not just two fat dudes slapping at each other until one pushes the other out. anyway I won't go into deep detail unless someone wants, but today was really cool. The move that decides the match is called the 'kimarite.' There are over 80 officially named ones but you only see a handful any given day. Today, we had two kimarite that haven't been seen in years. One in over a decade. I dunno, that's kinda neat to me. Bonus: kid from the area I'm in won his match today. Mitakeumi gonna win it all, heard it here first. |

not quite that fast but you get some good ones on occasion and despite the flab these dudes are hella ripped underneath it all. This one european dude, Tochinoshin, when he was at his peak a couple of years ago was just lifting these guys up by their belt and escorting them outta the ring, was insane https://giant.gfycat.com/ThoseAcrobaticCapybara.webm |

I don't know a ton but I went and saw the Haru Basho in Osaka years ago with some friends. It was a lot of fun. We got the cheapest tickets, but if you get there early (you pretty much have to to get the cheap tickets) you can sit in any open seat until the person who got the tickets for them shows up. People who buy good tickets mostly just show up at the end so we had basically front row seats for the first few hours. A guy I know saw me on TV in the audience and texted to ask if I was there. It was a really fun time. One of my favorite parts was when there was an upset and the old guys would throw their seat cushions at the ring and the announcer would ask people to not throw their seat cushions, but he just sounded so defeated because he knew those crusty old dudes weren't going to listen to him. |

I’ve been to a few in Tokyo, and yeah, it’s an awesome experience. And yeah, love how 1) the tradition to throw the cushions exist and yet 2) they never fail to make that announcement regardless. (For those wondering, when one of the rank-and-file bottom 30ish of the top group defeats a yokozuna, or the best of the best, those near the ring who could afford The Good Seats have cushions they sit on. Cushions which traditionally get thrown in the air in such a situation.) https://giant.gfycat.com/ThoseAcrobaticCapybara.webm |

sumo rules. I thought Jason was retiring from his recap videos but it looks like he's still going, which is cool because his YouTube channel is great even if you don't know anything about sumo

Nice! I've always enjoyed this dude's simple and straight-to-the-point recaps, but variety is always a good thing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=?c?Kintamayamasumo https://giant.gfycat.com/ThoseAcrobaticCapybara.webm |

i learned about the Henka recently and how it's controversial my opinion is: if all matches were 3-second affairs due to henka then sumo would be boring. but having it happen occasionally is good, for variety that's most of my sumo knowledge!
