Maybe a dumb question but if China were to make a move on Taiwan that resulted in the US navy losing ships, wouldn’t that be the end of their export economy? I’m sure they could still sell to India or Russia but would guess the impact of tens of thousands of factories being unable to produce for a furious western market would offset benefits of gaining Taiwan.

Same as with the submarine program, same as why the US justifies the MIC, the Jones Act, etc. Once you lose that expertise or fall so far behind, its extremely expensive to rebuild and can take decades.

Australia lost most of their (nuclear submarine?) capability from construction to operation apparently and re-establishing that is going to be tough. Even establishing something like a domestic car/airplane industry is a nightmare using China as an example.

Farewell, good Hunter. May you find your worth in the waking world.

According to the articles I read the Aussie’s main issue with France was that the French engineers figured if you’re building a submarine in Australia, the conning tower would go on the bottom of the boat.

As Midjack said, the US has to buy from somewhere, and has a hungry market. The US no longer importing from China or China-umbrella areas will sink the US long before it sinks China.

https://www.thedailybeast.com/gregg-prentice-anti-mask-florida-election-official-dies-of-covid-and-takes-gop-software-secrets-with-him

quote:

Just a day after testing positive for COVID-19, a Florida Republican official who battled against mask mandates, attacked the vaccine, and railed at CDC officials has died in Tampa.

Gregg Prentice, who was 61, led the Hillsborough County Election Integrity Committee—and his sudden death has sent the local GOP scrambling as it no longer has access to essential campaign finance software without his help.

In a Sept. 14 letter to the Federal Election Commission, the Hillsborough County Republican Executive Committee reported it might not be able to file its monthly financial reports as required—because only Prentice knew how to do it.

“Gregg’s software converted data from our Quickbooks software to supply the information needed by the FEC,” it states. “Unfortunately, Gregg passed away suddenly from Covid-19 on Saturday, Sept. 11, 2021. Gregg did not share the software and instructions with our officers. We will have to enter the August data manually, and according to the information we have received from our FEC analyst, Scott Bennett, we may likely have to re-enter the data from our first 7 months of 2021.

“We will be struggling to get all of this entered in the proper format by our deadline on Sept. 20, but we will try to do so with our best effort.”

Along with others in the Hillsborough County Election Integrity Committee, Prentice was a vociferous critic of the vaccine, mask mandates, and COVID-prevention measures. He railed against top infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci, vowing in a Twitter post to “end Faucism.” He also insisted the U.S. needs “more socialist distancing than we do social distancing” and that the pandemic was created to destroy small businesses.

A spokesperson for the Hillsborough Republican Executive Committee has reportedly said that Prentice’s wife and daughter have also caught COVID-19.

Meanwhile, as the local party reels, Prentice’s associates have spread their own wild conspiracy theories—presented without evidence—on how the official died.

Friend Jason Kimball blames Tampa General Hospital for the 61-year-old’s death, alleging staff “illegally intubated” Prentice the day before he died. During a Sept. 13 Tampa City Council meeting, Kimball requested an investigation be launched. However, members of the City Council denied any wrongdoing or mistreatment from the hospital.

https://www.wsfa.com//app/2021/09/16/alabama-health-officials-give-covid-19-update-friday/

quote:

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) - For the first time in recorded history, the state of Alabama in 2020 saw the number of deaths surpass the number of births “and actually by quite a bit,” said State Health Officer Dr. Scott Harris.

There were 64,714 deaths and 57,641 births in 2020.

Harris, holding his weekly update on the state’s efforts against the COVID-19 pandemic, said data going back more than a century showed it was the first year in which the births and deaths data was flipped. He added it could happen again in 2021 if the state continues with its current trend.

“The numbers of deaths have, unfortunately, not declined at this point,” Harris stated of Alabama’s death rate, which includes at least seven pregnant women.

Alabama’s hospitalization rate has declined over the past two weeks from a surge high of 2,890 to 2,223, as of Thursday, but Harris warned some of the reduction can be attributed to the state’s ongoing daily reporting of double-digit deaths.

Nationally, Harris said 1 in 500 Americans has died as a result of the pandemic, a number he called “staggering.”

In an effort to keep those with COVID-19 from getting sick enough to need hospitalization, Alabama has been working to increase the number of locations that provide monoclonal antibody treatments. However, the federal government is now tightening control over product allocation.

On a call Monday afternoon with health leaders from every state that federal officials announced that all monoclonal antibody products would have to be ordered through states’ health departments, not through antibody providers, and that each state would be allocated shipments based on their case numbers, Harris said.

Harris added that federal authorities have explained that if a state doesn’t use at least 70% of what’s ordered, that state’s future supply shipments will be decreased.

Harris said the change has caught every state off guard and said there will probably be some patients who will need the treatment but will be unable to get it due to shortages.

Alabama’s vaccination rate continues to increase. About 1.9 million residents are now fully vaccinated, pushing the state over the halfway mark in terms of those who are eligible for the shots. That moves Alabama ahead of three other states. Additionally, Alabama has 2.3 million residents who have taken their first dose, ahead of eight states in terms of first doses.

ADPH reported 3,972 new COVID-19 cases Thursday, adding to the more than 761,000 cases confirmed since March 2020.

The pandemic has claimed a confirmed 13,048 lives.

Yes, monoclonals are basically the only decent medical treatment specifically for COVID-19 - at about $2100 a dose. They're not at all foolproof, and they actually, seriously help. But vaccines are like $10-20 a dose.

The Ric Flair thing is nothing new, he was already sued by the woman I believe and I think they settled it out of court (unless there is something new). There was a recent episode of Vice's Dark Side of the Ring that went through what happened. He got drunk and exposed himself to a flight attendant (I read, haven't watched it yet). Tommy Dreamer for some reason defended it and now it looks like he was fired from Impact. Weird timing for Ric because he is out of the WWE and speculation was he was going to AEW to manage Andrade (his son-in-law). I am certain Tony Khan won't let that happen now.

Looks like the feds are paying for the treatments, with insurance/states/locals charging for any potential administration costs. DeSantis is mad because the Biden HHS is taking back over distribution, because there's not enough to go around and the southern anti-masking states are eating up 70% of the supply between just a few of them. DeSantis specifically sent up dedicated monoclonal infusion sites while inviting antivaxxers to speak at his press conferences too.
