Totally understandable, I did the same thing when I first came across those quests. One other quest to avoid is the "Find X Location" quest because that is also a money sink. I trash talk those quests because in addition to them being money sinks they just aren't as fun, IMO. The silver lining for the hunt quests is if you need a specific component for crafting then they can give you some leads on where to fight those baddies. Good luck with it!

Did you pick Northern Raiders start? It's one of my favorite company origins but I've had my share of campaigns end b/c of exactly this. I thought I was safe in the southern city-state desert region one time and I guess the northmost noble house commissioned a nine-man hit squad for my company by like day 30 that tracked me down half the globe over. Sometimes you can really get lucky with enemy mercenary squads though - they have some of the widest variety in potential equipment so sometimes you will get 1/2 with simple swords and spears and 80 durability armor and can finesse the nice stuff of the remainder. Conversely, they can be some of the toughest fights you can find in the early-mid game if they all roll high-quality, military grade gear

Key thing to remember with peasants is if you keep all the riff raff you start with it will gently caress the difficulty scaling and make the game super hard - you should immediately fire anyone who isn’t up to snuff and then if need be hire to get yourself to a point where you have 5-8 decent bros.

Give your prospective archer a pike and have him stand behind a shield bro poking things until he has atleast 60 ranged skill. Then its crossbow time. Theres an alternative progression of sling, to crossbow to bow but he'll actually pull his weight with a pike (because polearms are hugely powerful in this game.)

Imo hunters are the only class to recruit for consistently good archers. Everyone else is various degrees of trash in comparison. Poachers can tide you over for a while but they're not made for endgame companies. Other than that you might end up finding someone with a lucky base stat and stars but it happens very rarely. So yeah regularly visit every forest town/town with hunter cabins on the map to roll on every hunter you can afford but be prepared to fire them because they didn't get stars in ranged. Finding my good archers is right up there with looking for my special 2h bois in terms of effort

Ironically the caravan assist probably made it worse. Necrosavants heal when they do HP damage, and giving them poorly-armoured caravan guards and defenceless bags of HP donkeys to snack on means a bunch of full health confident necros wrecking your poo poo even worse than usual.

No. The slower you grow the size of your company, the slower the game gets harder. Level scaling is based on elapsed time and on your company's average level as well, but the biggest factor in the game's difficulty is how many people are in your company. Grow slowly and you'll find the game's difficulty curve a little more forgiving, grow quickly and you'll find it a lot harder.

I ideally want an archer to be able to get to 90 ratk by level 11, but one thing that is good for a peasant game is to grab some bros that will hit 80+ and turn them into dedicated throwers (in 12 man company games I do a hybrid archer/thrower). a bro with javelins will absolutely wreck poo poo and the high accuracy bonus of throwing a javelin at point blank range means they will be useful even at lower levels. make 2-4 throwers and worry about archers if/when you happen to get a miracle bro with like 48 starting ratk and 3 stars.

I've taken the approach of letting caravan guards being the bait for new enemies. so that I can get a preview of how their mechanics work. I immediately ran when I saw what they could do. I believe I made the right choice

I fought some goblin wolfriders with a caravan. I'm pretty sure they would have shredded me solo. they are a good lesson on protecting your flanks and using terrain for area denial. a spearbro just chillin with some trees can hold off a few things while you deal with the other half of their squad

rideANDxORdie

Wolf riders feel like an armor check more than anything. In the early game, facing an enemy that can move large distances and still hit twice/hit three times in a single turn is very intimidating but once you get to 115 durability armor (chainmail) and beyond they are pretty easy. They rout really fast due to poo poo morale and the last time I played they seemed to dedicate about half their forces at any given time to trying to encircle which looks really bad but I think makes them easier than if they ever actually all just bumrushed you simultaneously.

You are using the caravan hands and guards correctly though lol

Yeah I'd say direwolves/wolfriders/goblin ambushers form kind of a continuum on the concept of an 'armor check' enemy :v: Direwolves are pretty much "can you survive 1-3 turns of your front line being brutalized by attacks that bounce off heavy armor", wolfriders are "can you survive that but with enemies that will prioritize weaker bros", and goblin ambushers are "can you survive an infinite barrage of arrows for however long it takes to snipe the enemy archers or break through their layer of stupid melee assholes protecting them"

company inspection report:

the one ok-ish archer I found:

I honestly don't know what I'm doing with perks:

but I'm terrified of losing people so everyone gets colossus, iron brow and recover. then 2 handers get backstab, front liners get the reposition skill & shieldwall, and after that I'm not sure besides weapon specialist and i think battleforged for the front line? there's so many choice and it feels like you could create some niche builds depending on stat loadout. I've heard people mention hybrids. I assume that uses quick hands to switch between javelins and a main weapon?

I did get a bunch of notched blades, from killing gobbos, that double as knifes. which led to me stabbing brigand raiders for their poo poo when I went to drop off those furs back down south. oh and I am comfortably sitting on 8k. which I need to head back north and start searching for top tier weapons. I assume you can find a bunch from fighting but certain things can only be bought

vyelkin
Jan 2, 2011
I'm sure other people will come in with their opinions on perks, but one bit of feedback: don't spend your 8k on top-tier weapons, spend them on good armour. That's enough to get 3-4 sets of 200+ durability heavy armour, and the difference between wearing that and wearing gear you looted from brigand raiders is the difference between life and death, especially once you get Battleforged on your frontliners. The difference between a common looted weapon and a top-tier weapon (which, btw, can also be looted much more easily than armour) is like 5-10 damage, but the difference between common looted armour and purchased armour is 100-200 durability which is way, way, way, way more important.

rideANDxORdie
Jun 11, 2010
Seems like you're doing alright! I don't want to bog you down with metagaming BS but if you're playing ironman, picking colossus AND steel brow can make sense. I usually only pick one and to be honest, it's always colossus but I don't play ironman. Every brother will want to get either battleforged or nimble as soon as possible - battleforged for brothers in heavy armor and nimble for dodgy bros in light armor.

Seconding that you should be spending your hard-earned gold on better armor, not weapons. Great armor is a lot harder to find in the field then great weapons. In addition, body armor pieces are harder to score off of enemies then helmets. Shoot for reinforced mail hauberks (around 230 durability IIRC, can be bought for around 2k-3k/hauberk) and start equipping them on your favorite bros.

With better armor comes much higher fatigue penalties, so you may want to start picking up brawny on those brothers. Brawny can give a bro 10+ fatigue in heavy armor.

Hybrids are throwers/lancers who use quick hands to switch between throwing weapons and polearms, usually

Count Uvula

Don't take colossus on everybody, generally killing things quicker and the mobility to rotate in/out of threatened tiles does more for your backline's survivability than colossus ever will. My advice for when to take it would be: Always on dodge tanks, only on armor tanks if they have decent base value+talents in HP, and same criteria as armor tanks for early-game melee attackers but not mid-late game ones (since you'll be able to safely get them to Battleforged without it)

Also just as forewarning, Bodo's 26 morale is gonna be a massive liability, be careful that you don't take him in to fights with undead or witches.

It's mostly about having build plans for certain "archetypes" that you want your bros to be. For example...

Student
Colossus
Gifted
Rotate
Recover
Underdog
Battleforged
Pathfinder
Brawny
Mace or Axe spec+shield expert

..this is the plan for all my 1h+shield bros that farm raiders for gear and carry me from early to midgame. Pretty much any background can fill this archetype if their physical and combat stats are half-decent. They'll never be star players but solid backbone until I don't need them anymore.

Student
Bullseye
Anticipation
Bow Mastery
Recover
Nimble
Berserk
Frenzy
Quick Hands
Duelist+Throwing Mastery

And this is the plan for my archer/thrower hybrid which is much more specialized and geared towards lategame fights. I could type at lentgh about my builds and each of the perks but I'm not sure what you rather want to discover on your own so I'll resist :v:

One word of advice though. Don't spend your stat rolls on lvl up all over the place trying to round bros out. Some stats are much more important than others and it's usually best to focus on them and only sacrifice as few rolls as possible to shore up less important stats. Like fighters want to get fatigue, melee attack, and melee defense at almost every level to be good. So you have to balance that out with also giving them enough health and morale along the way. Some perks can help here but just pay attention to what you spend your rolls on and recognize that you sometimes have to take a bad roll in fatigue or melee defense to not end up with too low of a stat in the end. Trouble with this is that I have target stat ranges for my bros in mind and act according to those but I can't easily summarize that without blowing this post up. Lastly, never increase initiative (except for very specialized builds and maybe a tiny bit on archers with heavier armor) and ranged defense is only worth it on the backline.

It does factor in time, but you could still rebuild by taking easy contracts, avoiding tough fights, and so on. Even losing most of your company at day 80, you probably would still have significantly better equipment, more money, better relations with towns to get good deals, and so on, than you do on day one, and that will help a lot even if you're seeing more brigand raiders than thugs.
