The dreadful and boorish reading series was not even halfway entertaining enough to support two episodes, starting the second half off with this homophobic fuckwit who is too much of a pussy to swear in his own syndicated column loving mega sucked rear end, and the only even semi-insightful points were when Matt pointed out how this is all performative masculinity so other men will think your manly (ie its gay) and it absolutely didn’t deserve the lion’s share of the segment. All their pop culture analysis were way more engaging. I think the biggest flaw is that if Felix had taken literally 5 seconds at the beginning of his segment to just explain “ok so there was rap, then there was Trap, which is denoted by these music qualities, and then that begat Drill music, which is defined as being a harsher, more violently framed rap vocals but with the more club-style glamorous beats” the entire thing would have worked 10,000% better. Instead he didn’t define the main two terms of a 20 minute deep dive in which he constantly referenced those terms, and effectively alienated a huge portion of his audience (people who don’t listen to rap while streaming Twitch all day) It’s so simple and would have been so effective to help engage people in the material, IMO.

That was a good episode about weird science fiction. It's weird because it's fantastically impossible, we will never even try to delete the rich and their entire direct bloodlines.

I finally listened to the KSR interview and it was....alright. He briefly mentions the dark, mass death future of burning carbon fuels until the food runs out but I can understand why he doesn't dwell on it because what would even be the point behind saying 'literally give up hope of things ever getting better'

Years of Rice and Salt is my favorite novel ever, but it and most of KSR's books have a sort of charmingly earnest, bordering on naive optimism, at the end of the day, so I'm not surprised that he's reluctant to embrace the (otherwise objectively correct) doompill philosophy.

Even if the doomers are right, it's an outlook whose only prescription is resigned nihilism (see the numerous cspam failbrain alcoholic threads) honestly even if it does end up being an entirely naive and utopian position there's far greater value in articulating a vision if the future where humanity comes together in the face of climate change and survives than 'nothing matters lol'

For a bunch of people who think everything is hopeless and nothing matters, doomers really care a lot about winning arguments on the Internet.Bust Rodd posted:The dreadful and boorish reading series was not even halfway entertaining enough to support two episodes, starting the second half off with this homophobic fuckwit who is too much of a pussy to swear in his own syndicated column loving mega sucked rear end, and the only even semi-insightful points were when Matt pointed out how this is all performative masculinity so other men will think your manly (ie its gay) and it absolutely didn’t deserve the lion’s share of the segment. It's also funny that they kept confusing Kim Du Troit with a different, equally pathetic conservative wimp. Matt is right that he's one of those "It's gay to father children with a woman" guys, but he takes it a step further. Every single trivial aspect of modern life is emasculating to him. He even complains that boxing isn't manly enough and cockfighting should be legal. (Which is bizarre, not only because he thinks watching your pets fight is more manly that fighting, but comparing combat sports to cockfighting is what limp-dick conservatives like McCain always did.) When you get down to it, the only kind of masculinity Du Troit respects is murdering people. The only real man is the guy who presses the button that starts the nuclear war that kills every living thing on earth. quote:I think the biggest flaw is that if Felix had taken literally 5 seconds at the beginning of his segment to just explain “ok so there was rap, then there was Trap, which is denoted by these music qualities, and then that begat Drill music, which is defined as being a harsher, more violently framed rap vocals but with the more club-style glamorous beats” the entire thing would have worked 10,000% better.
