Without spoiling too much: In Super Metroid, which boss is meant to be done first, Maridia or Norfair? I can't figure out how to get in to either one, and the only rooms I haven't explored yet are a couple in Maridia that are locked behind greyed out doors.

Vague directional hint: You're looking for a room up top (I think) you can grapple across. That should put you in rooms with Mocktroids, enemies that sorta look like Metroids. If you see them you're going in the right direction

Samus Returns is pretty miserable on hard, so y’all were right. Alpha Metroids can kill you in like three hits. It’s kind of a miserable game in general with very drab and ugly areas. I also keep making bad decisions like going to the highest point in Area 2 but somehow not getting the Spring Ball until I came back later. I’m gonna power through but I wish they had tried to make it less ugly? At least Metroid II had the excuse of being a Game Boy game.

I'm glad Dread at least looks good, and that it was just the fact that all games look hideous on the 3DS rather than a problem with MercurySteam.

That's just reminding me that they hit a visual style in Prime that still looks good. The gamecube and ps2 era were good for that in a lot of cases. Super Mario Sunshine and Kingdom Hearts 2 are other good examples.

Crosspostin' from the chat thread because I forgot this thread exists. So despite having played a bunch of them I've never actually finished a Metroid game. With Metroid Dread only like, 2 weeks out I figured I should correct that so I'm going to try and go through Zero Mission > Samus Returns > Super Metroid > Metroid Fusion before Dread releases. I'm currently playing Zero Mission, have just grabbed the Varia Suit and I'm heading back down into Norfair now to go explore some heat and acid filled locations! I'm loving it. The music, the atmosphere, the pixel art. All of it. I don't know what stopped me from finished Zero Mission the last time I picked it up years and years ago - probably just got distracted by something else - but it's been great. It's bullshit that I'm at work and do not have designated Zero Mission breaks.

I finished Metroid Zero Mission and thus have finally actually finished a Metroid game for the first time. What a wonderful game. I got stuck twice that I can recall, I think once trying to get to Kraid and once trying to get to the Varia Suit and the answer both times was "go back and bomb this crack that you missed" which was mildly frustrating, but not the end of the world. The introduction of the metroids themselves is a fantastic moment, particularly that room that if you're not careful plunges you when you bomb it straight into a pit with six of the drat things flying at you. I died a few times on Mother Brain until it suddenly just clicked and then it felt pretty easy from there. I'm divided on the zero suit stuff post Mother Brain. Too many screens as you go through the mothership felt a little too much to me like "screw this up and you'll die" and the save points weren't close enough together that making my way back through didn't feel like a slog. The tense atmosphere is pretty good though, and getting the pulse beam and gravity suit and then getting to absolutely tear through the space pirates who now run and hide from you? Chefs kiss right there. To have the culmination of the game be Mecha Ridley who goes down like a chump was a little less so, but not enough to dampen the triumphant mood I finished the game in. Onward to Samus Returns! Very curious about this one as I imagine it's what MercurySteam are building off mechanically for Dread.
