Deng was publicly disgraced and criticized nationwide alongside then President Liu Shaoqi and was sent to work in a tractor factory in rural Jiangxi from 1969 to 1973.

One thing you guys should know is that Chinese local governments have a lot of freedom to do economy policy trails, and the laws get rolled back a lot if they don't turn out to be working.

I follow this guys economy talk 温铁军 on Guan Video, he is basically a long time China agricultural policy expert. This is his opinion not mine.

I think this is one of biggest weakness of India's economy reforms, they don't do enough local experiments and trails in walled off "special economic zones" before the new laws get roll out nationwide. China talked some BRI countries into doing Special Economy Zones including Cambodia and Iran.

If the goal is to demonize China for the English speaking audience, "Digital Leninism" seems like a bad label. In the West, Lenin only really has negative connotations among the upper classes, most people have probably never learned much about him.

"Techno-authoritarianism" is a good attack against China for domestic audiences. "Authoritarianism" is pretty unpopular, and it discourages people from downloading Chinese apps. Even "Socialism with Chinese characteristics" is alienating to a domestic Left hostile to nationalism and a wider culture that has a pretty high level of ambient anti-Chinese attitudes.

Digital Leninism sounds really cool in comparison, and maybe even applicable outside China.

I gotta be honest when I saw this I didn't think it would be that impactful, I assumed most coal was being used to make steel and it was likely 60-40. So I looked it up and uh

quote:

U.S. coal consumption by consuming sector by amount and percentage share of total coal consumption in 2020 was:

Electric power—436.5 MMst—91.5%
Industrial total—40.0 MMst—8.4%
Industrial coke plants—14.4 MMst—3.0%
Industrial combined heat and power—9.9 MMst—2.1%
Other industrial—15.7 MMst—3.3%
Commercial—0.8 MMst—0.2%
Residential and transportation—not available 2

"Deng Xiaoping: A Revolutionary Life", by Alexander Pantsov

I'd say his writing is somewhat similar to Kotkin in that he's not at all sympathetic to the CPC, and there's maybe a bit too much "Great Man" attribution in it, but its very well researched and uses primary sources from China.

i started reading it and you're right. it gives you nice details but some passages have me rolling my eyes and doing the wank motion

quote:

“On April 12, terrible news arrived from Shanghai that Chiang Kai-shek, commander-in-chief of the National Revolutionary Army, had unleashed a bloody White Terror in Shanghai and other cities of Eastern China directed against the communists. Chiang did so because in the course of the unfolding Northern Expedition and the concomitant mass movement of landless peasants, paupers, and rural riffraff, Stalin once again had ordered the CCP to take the political offensive inside the Guomindang. In early spring 1927, the CCP received a directive from the Soviet Politburo “to squeeze out the Guomindang rightists . . . to pursue a policy of occupying important positions in the army . . . strengthening the work of Guomindang and communist cells in the army . . . pursuing a course of arming the workers and peasants, and transforming the peasant committees in the provinces into real organs of power with armed self-defense.”12
Thereafter the movement of landless peasants, paupers, and rural riffraff against the “rural bloodsuckers” reached a “stage of madness.”13 In several cities, including Shanghai, the Communist party’s armed workers’ pickets even began violently attacking the well-to-do relatives of influential Guomindang and communist leaders.

This is why Chiang Kai-shek finally dissolved the united front”

alright bro

meanwhile over in kotkin's biography of stalin he's hammering home that the soviets kept pressuring the cpc to maintain the alliance with the kmt at all costs, giving them concessions despite suffering assassinations and repression, which nearly wiped them out of history

this is cool though

quote:

Just twelve days after arriving in Moscow, Deng was transferred to UTK. On January 29, 1926, he received his UTK student ID card, no. 233, in the name of Ivan Sergeevich Dozorov.68 The following day, Saturday, January 30, he began his studies.
The two-year course was extremely demanding. Deng studied Russian, Marxist theory of historical materialism, Chinese and foreign revolutionary history, the history of the Bolsheviks, economic geography, political economy (from The Economic Doctrines of Karl Marx, by the German socialist Karl Kautsky, a book beloved by Lenin), party construction, military affairs, and journalism.69 Students were in class eight hours a day six days a week, from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a two-hour meal break.70

i wish i could attend communist school, or even find a good curricula somewhere

The soviets were horrible allies to China and North Vietnam. They forced Ho Chi Minh to accept the Geneva Treaty. They always kept their eyes on the European front and gave the rest of the world a secondary importance.

They also built the entire air defense network in North Vietnam (one of the largest and best in the world), formed, equipped and trained the entire air force and provided experts and technicians plus a lot more. Soviet specialists even died in battle. It's really not a stretch to say the North probably would have lost if not for Soviet support. China did not have the technology or production to provide these things in the 1960s.
