Here's your laptop, oh you know how to work a spreadsheet and copy and paste, cross reference everything you need on this page, go with god my son. she's checked in with me like three times and actually let me work. we of course have one guy who HAS to wander through the office while talking on his phone as loudly as possible. he was milling around reception and one of the ladies up front stuck her head out of her cubicle and said "please go away" and he slunk out like a kicked puppy.

I got a new role, still doing QC but in a different department. Right in time for Q4 which is appearing to be completely bugfuck crazy due to supply chain related issues. CEO fired the VP Ops and GM of the division I'm moving into and is ASSUMING DIRECT CONTROL like Harbinger Our GSC team has been told to source parts from wherever and however they can. This includes eBay and Amazon. They have not hired my replacement yet, I will have 1 week to train them in a role that takes 2 months to get to minimum competency. this is gonna rule.

I use MouseMove to move the mouse and Don't Sleep to stop the group policy that locks the PC if you're idle for 10 mins (who's going to access that data if I step away, my dog? lol), but it doesn't matter when Teams randomly decides to bug out. I can be actively working and I'll notice in the taskbar that Teams has marked me as away. I have to bring it to the foreground for a few seconds for it to decide I'm active, even though I've been typing away in a different window.

I tried the mouse-on-watch thing but can't tell if it's working. I work from home and nobody really cares what my computers are doing. Anyone using Chrome who just updated to version 94 might want to be aware they stuck a new API in there that allows a website to track your active status, and god knows what else. It probably hasn't been implemented anywhere yet, but Mozilla and Webkit have both weighed in that it is a terrible, privacy-violating thing. Oh, and it defaults to being on. I've left myself notes to change the privacy settings on all the machines I interact with that have Chrome on them.

I had to be careful taking lunch breaks because my manager would scold me if he saw that my Away status had been there for more than the allotted time. I did have one manager at my last job who trusted me, let me do my thing, praised me for a job well done, and would occasionally do things like send me free gift games on Steam. He even once carried a couch across the building into the room I worked in because I threw out my neck badly and couldn't sit upright anymore so he was concerned. That guy, I'm still friends with. That guy is a good guy. edit: And you know what, I worked harder for his department than in any other job I had at that company because he made me want to. He didn't force me to. He didn't demand me to. He didn't threaten me if I didn't. He made me actually want to so I did. edit2: and that same dude would do things like invited another person in the department over to his house for Thanksgiving dinner because they had recently moved here and didn't have friends or family to spend it with. Doggone it, he was an awesome manager. Catastrophe fucked around with this message at 16:26 on Sep 23, 2021 |
