I'm only considering it in FFXIV cuz it's 8-man with single boss encounters, personally. I watched a couple vids of people raiding MC in classic WoW and no way I'd do that poo poo ever again.

Everyone in our MMO-playing generations has time sinks of their own now (family, career, home). Meanwhile, everyone in younger generations has been raised on different poo poo (e.g. MOBAs and battle royales). There’s many reasons MMOs are a dying genre, but one big factor is that the people who have time don’t like MMOs, and the people who like MMOs don’t have time.

Final Fantasy 14's 'Alliance Raids' are the best except for the people gaming it to always get the lowest level easiest ones. 3 parties of 8 so the field looks like a clusterfuck, but the stakes are incredibly low and one competent party could carry a whole fight while the other two are mostly dead. Everything looks nuts but (aside from some rare mechanics) you can almost never wipe or horribly screw up the entire raid.

I did the latest FFXIV expansion's raid content raiding 2-4 hours per week, which felt about the correct amount of raiding for a non-NEET in their 30s, at that point it's not really much different from a weekly hobby and I somehow find time for those. That said though I only did what's called extreme trials and savage raids, which are the bread-and-butter hard 8-person content. That schedule does not include any of the 3 Ultimate fights currently in the game, which are particularly hard challenge fights. On top of the raid schedule I'd spend maybe a scattered hour or two over the course of the week doing stuff like running the easier endgame content in pick-up groups or other poo poo for endgame currency, which would also generally bankroll me the small amount of gil needed to pay for raid consumables.

What grindy mmos play well with a controller? I have pinched an arm nerve and am trying to limit my keyboard/mouse time to work hours. I just want something that I can zone out and listen to audio books, but it turns out the only PC arpg with controller support is torchlight 3, which, ugh. I know ff14 has controller support, and bdo. Are there any others worth knowing?

FF14 is the best with controller. I think Torchlight 2 has controller support on PC? FF11 if you’re into weirdo poo poo that seemed dated and esoteric as gently caress at launch, controller works just fine in that one and with the XIVhotbar mod it’s supposed to be real easy going. But I can do a bunch of drugs and level up in that game for hours and not feel bad about it one bit. Diablo 3 is good with controllers if you have a switch or PS or something. If you really want a fun time running around slaying a billion dudes, Ys is a good ARPG series that’s as anime as it is fun and it is very fun and it is very anime.

steam downloads most of the game for you, then the patcher finishes the last couple hundred megs, so use that imo. since it's f2p you just need to click play on the steam store

T2 has the same support that like PoE has (steam controller config can simulate button and mouse clicks with a weird degree of intelligence) except it has a workshop so people have made workshop mods to put the buttons into the UI. But it still sucks rear end to try and play using "controller support" that swipes your mouse around and clicks all over the place. As you might imagine there are a lot of loving edge cases that make it obnoxious to use. I'll check out Ys and Grim dawn.

I went out of the house for a while so it was done downloading when I got back, but thanks for the tips anyway! I snapped up all the expansions and quest packs except for, I guess, the most recent two, since they're not 99 Tolkien Tokens (also, why did they not call the cash shop currency "Tolkien Tokens"???? )

If grindy KMMOs are your jam, Black Desert and Tera both support them (both work a bit better on console than PC but it's fine). Blade and Soul usually does but they skipped it for the UE4 update and are working on it now.

Is anyone planning on trying out Book of Travels? It opens for early access today in a few hours: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1152340/Book_of_Travels/ However, I pre-ordered so I was able to play a bit beforehand, and the game seems interesting and different. A bit slow so far, but I only messed around a bit for a few hours because I didn't realize that backers had early access.

hah, i will make a thread if i end up sticking to it if no one else does. we will see if it captures me at all first. this weekend when i was reading through more of the info on it (when i realized i could play early, ugh) there was an NDA not to stream or release any content. that should be lifted today, so i might try to stream some this week when i have time. its very different and doesn't have guilds or things like that, servers are very small with only a few people on them. so, if goons did want to play together, we would probably need to find a way to coordinate getting on the same server together. i am not really sure how all that works yet with their weird system.

Native controller support, including UI and everything, and unlike FF14 it is an action MMO with combat actually suited to a controller. (Disclaimer: I have only tried it briefly yesterday. From what I hear it's not a very good game)
