My old college ride was an 03 Mazda6. Needed to change front lightbulbs. Got the manual online. "Drop the bumper and come in through below." That can't be right. Better check YouTube. "Well you don't need to drop the bumper, if you have the fingers of children you can come in through the back."

Took it to the mechanic and the desk clerk first smirked, then got really confused when the standard quote was 4 hours and was like "I'm sure we'll be done before that and update your labor total." Then took all 4 hours.

Book labor is an amazing thing for a mechanic. Book says 4 hours but you only do X so you can push through it in 2 hours because it's all you do, still get paid for 4 hours.

Those battery headlamp jobs are usually passed off to hourly techs, guys that don't have their ASEs yet. So the dealership gets to charge book while paying the mechanic hourly. They're going to charge you like it was the master mechanic working on it, though, who usually gets a more significant percentage of the hourly rate.

Batteries in the trunk tend to survive accidents better. It's a good move. People do it all the time to make room in the engine compartment for whatever poo poo they try to bolt on, I think some racing series require it be more internalized, with a cutoff switch.

But manufacturers hiding them isn't uncommon. Why put it somewhere accessible when you can hide it and charge 2 hours labor to replace it every 5 years?

I had to do a battery replacement on my car a few months ago. And the battery is in the trunk. My conclusion was all batteries should be in the drat trunk. The weirdest thing I had to move was the lining at the bottom. After that, all of the space in the world to work. No worries about dropping screws. In and out.

Ahh, reminds me of dropping the starter on my MK3 Supra turbo. You had to use a good 3 feet of extensions and a wobble joint to break them free. And I was a lucky one, I had the later models which had threaded taps for the bolts. The older ones had a nut on the far side, and I have no idea how you could possibly do it alone.

You can only change the headlights on my Mazda by going in behind the front wheels and tearing out the plastic rivets on the splash guards, pulling the guard out of the way (it moves about 3 inches) then blindly fishing around until you find the light fixtures. As an added bonus the plastic is so cheap it shatters in the cold as I discovered trying to replace them in a Minnesota January. So now I take my car to a mechanic to replace my bulbs, which is great.

Same on my that Fit too. Take off the bumper and remove the headlight, or go through the rear end.

The bulb poo poo itself just before the rally in the middle of last winter so I just said gently caress it and drove the whole week with one headlight because I wasn't going to be doing either of those things :ssh:

The Miata is dead easy. Takes like 30 seconds to replace bulbs. The alternator bolt is on the rear though and no amount of extensions are going to help you.

"Easier" is in the eye of the beholder, but when I did an Avenger I went in through the wheel well. Taking the bumper off looks like you'd have more crap in the way too, but I guess you don't need a jack.

At least the battery-in-the-trunk option has slightly better weight distribution, which is part of why muscle car guys used to relocate their battery.

Is the idea behind hiding the battery inside the car that it's not exposed to as extreme of heat/cold?

I think it's more packaging. A battery is just a rectangular blob that doesn't have to be physically connected to anything, so when space is tight under the hood it's an easy way to gain some room.

VWs always had the battery under the rear seat, primarily because there wasn't anywhere else to put it.

While I'm not entirely sold on the "no room" excuse, I do concede that there is often a larger engine available and they aren't going to redesign the engine bay for poor people.

Does seem like evidence that it's relatively easy to start them on fire though

I previously posted that my wife and I ended up talking to a guy at a bar who the previous week had just picked up some limited edition high end Tesla and it caught fire the next day. He had just dropped his kid off when he started smelling smoke and the doors wouldn't unlock. He was on the phone with a friend and he told the friend he was just going to drive home but the friend told him he was a moron and to just figure out how to get out. He ended up forcing the door open and got out before the entire thing went up.

He still is going to drive a Tesla but told me it's ok cause he purchased a window breaker from Amazon. Not sure if he actually listened to me when I said that those don't work on most newer cars and he needs to get something serated to actually cut through them.

I haven't heard anything about this. You can't break a hole in the windshield with one of those tools because it's laminated and will stay together, but the side windows should still be plain tempered glass and will explode into tiny cubes if you break the surface. Have car manufacturers switched to something else recently?

I have seen some safety bulletins come out regarding the laminated glass being an issue with rescues in higher end cars recently and they had some recommendations on safety gear to carry, not really sure if that's the case with all the windows or it was an issue where the rescue could only be affected through the front window. I apologize if I am completely wrong though

My car has it behind the rear wheel well inside the wagon storage area. You have to crawl over the rear seats, and find a bung where inside a big flat head screwdriver MIGHT work if you know where to magically locate it. Even knowing the specific spot and technique - it's a prick of a job.
