What evolutionary advantage can there be to genuinely thinking you have a chance in a fight against absolutely everything, regardless of size or speed (or the fact that it's throwing bloody sparks at you) ?

It's an adaptive trait because game recognizes game.

quote:

When Duke Chuang of Ts'i (B. C. 794-731) once went ahunting, there was a mantis raising its feet and seizing the wheel of his chariot. He questioned his charioteer as to this insect who said in reply : 'This is a mantis ; it is an insect who knows how to advance, but will never know how to retreat ; without measuring its strength, it easily offers resistance.' The Duke answered: 'Truly, if it were a man, it would be the champion-hero of the empire.' Then he turned his chariot to dodge it, and this act won him all heroes to go over to his side.

I get that this is supposed to refer to the Duke, but I'm choosing to believe instead that all the heroes abandoned whatever armies they belonged to, and followed a mantis into battle.

I have no idea either. I usually just let things like this go because after the explanation it's never as funny as everyone seems to think it is.

Yeah. Lots of animals are much more muscular than you'd think, they just have more fur and fat that a kangaroo does.

Chimps are loving jacked.

Yeah the bigger question is why are humans so weak? and the tldr is that humans have evolved to keep a comparatively low amount of muscle mass on average because 1) humans are built more for endurance than explosive strength and 2) muscle mass requires a lot of nutrients and calories and protein to maintain. Iirc it's negatively-regulated primarily by myostatin (eg more myostatin production leads to a lower homeostatic muscular baseline), which humans have a ton of and which is comparatively found in much, much smaller amounts in stronger, more muscular animals. Cats for instance have extremely low myostatin levels, hence how big cats can stay immensely strong despite sleeping for 16-20 hours a day.
