Oh, people have done even better than that. VRChat allows you to assign arbitrary fragment shaders to surfaces; someone wrote a fragment shader that emulates a RISC-V CPU and a console, set up a 2048x2048 texture to use as general memory, and booted Linux on it.

I played this!

I have not been following along with development except peeking into the thread about once a year to see it's still going along. I saw the free week and figured I might as well...

I know everyone knows this in the thread, but... come on... there was nothing going on in this game. I walked around (very slowly and janky) and lifeless NPCs stood around and walked. I had to turn down my settings to 1080p, though I play most games in 4k (Cyberpunk being the exception at 1440). I saw people talking in chat, went into a bar that was empty. I fell through the world.

Respawned and went exploring. I can't remember the name of the place I chose but it was fancy looking with tram lines. I got on one of those and was happy that I didn't fall through the ground. Got off the tram and then fell through an tiny opening that I decided to try and jump over.

Respawned and went to the hangers to see if I could summon my ship. I couldn't figure out which bay or what to do. I uninstalled it.

Wow what a game. Move over Mass Effect. We have a new king. To be clear, I am comparing the entire Star Citizen to just the ending of Mass Effect 3. We have a new King of poo poo!

I can remember back to the Everquest Alpha and they at least had running around and hitting things in the game. Like, ok I can see what you are trying to do here. What the gently caress is SC? Is it Freelancer multiplayer? Is it a persistent world No Man's Sky? No it's Second Life in space. Wow.

Seriously, there was not a single iota of gameplay. It appears to be a future chat program at the moment and they decided to let the general public play that? I don't get it.

I rate this "game" 1 star out of an infinite multiverse of stars.

Now see here, if you would simply download the 3 page guide on how to tweak the settings in SC, build a machine that is X years ahead of current generation technology, pre-plan all of your steps in-game with your guild of 50 players, find a newly restarted server for only you and your 49 closest guild members and only do VERY specific activities WHY it is the greatest game ever made!

I will always get a kick out of people misspelling "hangar" as "hanger" in SC because the only thing you can do there is hang the game 90% of the time.

Kings need not raise their voices to be heard

quote:

quote:

Okay so I've played a few games that are similar to Star Citizen (believe it or not, they exist).

No they don't exist. That is your first erroneous assumption... but not your last. It tells readers where your biases lie and what your level of understanding about what the Star Citizen game universe is.

Don't extrapolate from the current Alpha, it is nothing like what it is to become. Star Citizen is a universe simulator, not a ship owners simulator.

A lot of players won't even bother getting ships, they'll be happy to go around as independent operators using passenger services. Vending machine repair on space stations, farming, vendors, those who just want to go around and sight-see. There will be plenty of things you can do in the verse that don't involve owning or operating a ship.

90% of ship traffic in the verse will be AI and only around 1% of the NPC population can afford a ship at all. Even now we don't see players mainly favouring big ships. I have 34 ships and mostly use my smaller ones unless I have a good reason not to.

Most of the new players will come after release when they can't get big ships so easily. Right now it is easy to grind for them for testing purposes only. No point in making the progression too heavy so that few engage in it if you want to test those features. Later owning a ship will be considered a rarity in UEE society, most will owned and operated by big organisations or government agencies - most of the verse's population aren't even citizens, they are civilians. Large ships will not be cheap to run.

that guy's looking forward to a theoretical gamestate where income inequality is severe enough that only loyal sc backers like him will even have ships and the 6 billion other players (final project so captivating 90% of people all play at release) will be happy to take the bus as they go to their game job as a space casino dealer, happy to deal cards, unburdened by spaceship ownership problems.

Star Citizen the CryEngine mod Game is not in itself that interesting, but goddam the light it shines on the Weltanschauung of its backers is fascinating.

Kings need not raise their voices to be heard

quote:

I don't disagree MMO's can be huge too, SC could also be huge, but you cannot really compare it to a free to play game with over 100 millions players like Fortnite or Apex though, or LOL and Dota 2 for that matter .
SC is very much a niche game, and as far as MMO's go the only somewhat comparable one is Eve online, as for WOW it can be extremely casual, most MMO's are designed to be accessible and casual, that doesn't mean there is no gameplay for the more hardcore players, I do not think SC will ever be that level of casual, there is a lot of aspects to the game, some of which will be easier than others, but the game is very much skill based .

quote:

It's a stretch to consider the game that holds the world record for crowd funding (and not just for a game!) to not already be ludicrously, ridiculously and savagely popular. It simply already is.

And, and this is the interesting part, without any traditional marketing. Since we know traditional marketing works, it's going to be mind-boggling how big this game gets when released and actually marketed.

Chris has said it multiple times and every calculation agrees with him; no matter how big this game gets before traditional marketing, it will explode after. They fully expect their go-forward game purchases and optional UEC purchases to eclipse all pre-release financial income, perpetually.

The appeal is going to be HUGE. It'll be Star Wars huge, open world game huge (think Skyrim), etc., as it blends all the things that are independently hugely appealing already. MS flight sim shows that the desire for simulations similar to this are primed and ready.

As big as it already is, relatively few of the potential gamers that will one day know of it actually know of it today. The gaming world, and therefore the potential, is -that- big.
