haldolium posted:never heard of it before but apparently AWAY: The Survival Series will be out tomorrow Sep. 28 on steam (and later on consoles) meh extreme performance issues (<60FPS/4k UHD) for okay-but-not-great visuals, devastatingly bad menu and unresponsive/random action animations that really don't give a good feedback on controlling the animal. (maybe better with a controller, timings will still be bad though). Otherwise cute. Do not buy right away. Supposedly very short as well and so far very linear.

I also forgot to mention that HOT WHEELS UNLEASHED, an arcade racing game where you drive hot wheels on little hot wheel tracks, came out. Apparently people like it a lot. I played it and wasn't too impressed at first, seemed solid but just doesn't have anything extra to make it special. Maybe I'll play it a bit more to try and see what everyone else is liking about it. It kind of reminds me of Trackmania but not as good, but to be fair I haven't tried any of the user created tracks and stuff which looks kind of fun.

So Lemnis Gate is out now and it's certainly a unique game with its time loop mechanics and only being either 1v1 or 2v2 but honestly that uniqueness harms it more than it helps, makes it way too cerebral for an FPS to be particularly fun(indeed the time loop mechanics just make it stressful and obnoxious to play), which is a shame because it looks great, controls well, and has good gun feel, would have been fantastic as a more conventional FPS but as it is it'll probably just rot in obscurity as an odd novelty

Is it like the 5th timeloop game that released this year? 12 Minutes, The Returnal, Deathloop, The Forgotten City, The Outer Wilds DLC (counts), so it's at least the 6th. Sure that the concept was always there but it ramped up in 2021. Probably because it's a way to implement roguelite mechanics that became popular in recent years into more story-based games AND you can reuse game assets. I wonder if we see more major games going with it.

So Ive also been playing Sable, the mix of Mobius style and good writing us super compelling. But yeah there are some incredibly bad choices they made, such as the floater bike not just staying a set distance above the ground and instead bouncing off of everything like a drunk whale. The bike gets way more obnoxious after you slap the speed engine on it, especially if you try to jump off a dune.

Hell yeah I fuckin' love a time loop. My gf and I started our first date with a discussion about time loops and how nearly all sci fi shows end up doing one at one point or another. They can sometimes be a little weird to pull off in a game, but the release of the Outer Wilds DLC has gotten me back in em.

Eurogames tend to be very dry, with minimal theming and low randomness (as opposed to "Ameritrash" board games which are typically higher variance and more thematic). Concordia is one of the highest rated Eurogames because of its depth and variety of strategies. Worth noting that a lot of its accolades come from the Salsa expansion, which isn't yet available on the digital version. It's great with other people, but I don't think I'd recommend it as a single player experience.

Other people have tried to explain the difference but to "translate" from cardboard gaming to video gaming: The video gaming translation of "Ameritrash" is "you can win by mashing buttons and if random stuff works out in your favour" while "Eurostyle" translates to "you win by developing a very specific replicable strategy and ideally calculate that method using a spreadsheet and several math formulae and then that becomes the only one true way to play the game so you never play again". The funniest thing I've ever heard from a Eurostyle player was "I play Power Grid all the time but I've never had fun playing it, I don't think that's the point anyway".
