Also the monster gorilla costumes looked like poo poo.

When I was young my dad had Congo on laserdisc and we loved it. It was a great movie then, riding on the cuffs of Jurassic Park it’s animatronics and effects were good, and the comedy was good too. I recently watched it with my wife and kids, like two months ago, and it just really exemplified how different movies are these days. We expect so much more out of movies now, and get arguably a lot more visual and a lot less mental out of them at times. Trying to fit Congo into the current movie meta is just not possible, and it makes it stink to high heaven. But back when it came out? It was good times. It’s weird how much expectations in film have changed.

Speaking of Bruce Campbell, October 15th will mark the 40th anniversary of the release of the classic Sam Raimi movie The Evil Dead. Bruce stars as Ash Williams, a kind of hapless everyman thrust into a demonically-tinged nightmare that can only be solved by total dismemberment (as is usually the case.) I figure I'd bring this up now because I figure by the 15th, this thread will have moved on to discussing the new revelations of how Trump sought to overturn the election by releasing genetically modified Brown Recluse Murder Hornets into Congress. Anyhow, the Evil Dead! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NL6mioAlpJk The first one, which grew out of the 1978 short Within The Woods, had some unique camera tricks and really attempted to be a "serious" horror movie in terms of gore and the overall atmosphere. It also had a, uh, unfortunate love scene involving a horny demonic tree. The sequel, Evil Dead 2, was kind of a sequel-remake to the first Evil Dead movie, and was the first notable time that Raimi and Campbell really found their "splatstick" formula of excessive gore employed in a kind of tongue and cheek way. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FIJTvEo4N4Q This was followed by Army of Darkness, which completely abandons any pretense of being a horror movie and is instead full of over-the-top dialogue and action scenes to boot. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Or3okI_mad8 If you've never seen any of these and are looking for a fun little popcorn movie experience, I'd recommend starting with Evil Dead 2 and marathoning straight through to Army of Darkness. xpostin' this and shamelessly plugging the Spooky Season thread.

I was told it was a Bruce Campbell movie, so my idiot brain decided that Bruce Campbell was the name of the character coming in to save everyone at the end. My dumbass had to be told that Bruce Campbell is the actor's name and he's playing Ash in the movie. Bubba Ho-Tep is underrated.

Just read about the essex. Those motherfuckers killed over 300 tortoises. Combine that with the fact that they were whaling, makes 8 survivors too many.

I'm seeing people dance on Twitter about "Trump is Broke" because some documents released by the House Oversight Committee indicate the D.C. Trump International Hotel experienced a net loss of $70 million while he was president. https://www.cnn.com/2021/10/08/politics/trump-hotel-dc/index.html quote:Trump's income from the Trump International Hotel reported in public financial disclosures dating from 2016 to 2020 totaled more than $156 million, the committee said Friday. I mean I'm not a money numbers talker, but it seems like you would want to be showing losses all the time or defer losses from a bad period across the next three. If the hotel was taking-in money hand-over-fist, wouldn't you expect the business to find way of funneling that off to other parts they wouldn't have to pay tax on?

Truth. Seriously, worth the watch if you've never seen it. Bruce was also in a Jim Carrey movie some 15 years ago but it's a bit role overacting for film sequence shown in the movie, The Majestic. So like, 2 minutes of campy relief while Jim Carrey is being largely sad and confused for 2 hours. Best 2 minutes of the movie.
