I watched some video the other day on Youtube about the command prompt and PowerShell and it said in a recent Windows 10 update, that the command prompt and PowerShell now support tabs. I am on the latest Windows 10 update but don't have them on mine. Is this something I need to download separately? This has been surprisingly difficult to google.

You need Windows Terminal, it's a free app. Available on MS Store or github Definitely not part of a standard 10 update or anything like that.

It doesn't replace the existing Powershell or Command Prompt? Also how do I run the command prompt instead of Powershell? When I type in "terminal" it brings up the new Powershell.

Chumbawumba4ever97 posted:Thank you! In the Terminal settings there's options for the Default Terminal Application (mine says preview but you should be able to do it with the regular version as well): Change it to Windows Terminal, and when you do a Win+R and type CMD it will open command prompt in Terminal instead of the old CMD window. The setting above it will change what opens when you open a new tab (or what opens by default) The down arrow next to the + will give you a drop down of different command lines you can run: You can also add new ones in the settings if you install Linux Subsystem or want a different Powershell session to start in a different folder, for example. There's also an option to have it run in 'Quake mode' where it will run in the background and you can press WIN+` to have it slide down from the top of your screen like the old Quake, UT, Half-Life, etc... consoles CBD Corndog fucked around with this message at 19:39 on Oct 13, 2021 |

Oh, maybe its a Windows 11 thing then. I googled first to make sure it worked on Win10 and saw a few articles mention it working with Terminal version 1.9

Ask away! You have access to Hyper-V with Win10 Pro. Unless you've got a good reason not to use that, I'd use that.

Check out DOSBox if you haven't already. Might be the easiest way to do what you're trying to do. https://www.dosbox.com/wiki/Performance

It's the late, great Magic - The Gathering from 1997. There are English-language versions out there that run on modern systems, but I have all three discs (original plus two expansions) in another language and I badly want to play this version. It's a Windows 95/98 sort of game. I had some decent luck running it under Virtual XP in Windows 7, though still with the speed issues.

If it’s Shandalar, a files version worked fine for me awhile back in native 10, I think there’s some community patching.

This is the 90s game that was being talked about earlier in the thread right? Try running it in a windows 95 VM but specifically use the foreign language version of windows 95 that the game you have was released in.

Back in XP I had to wait two hours on an Office update, but at the time didn’t know if it was just a big patch or a infinite loop! I ended up hard resetting which broke the OS (wouldn’t boot) and having to format and reinstall. The not-knowing was the frustration, though. That’s the first time I learned (afterwards) about events and logging, though, which really helped in the long run!

I woke up my PC from sleep to find Edge, which is definitely not my default browser, was open with a Bing search for OpenOffice Calc. I have and use that software, I know it's been discontinued but whatever. Did Windows do that somehow, like checked for software updates and then kindly informed me that one of my programs is dead by automatically launching Edge on that search? If so what do I turn off to get it to stop? I've never seen that happen before so it must be some new feature...

It might be that you did a search for OpenOffice, or hit the windows key and mashed the O key and it auto populates as the first option but did a search for it instead of launching it (since the windows search defaults to doing a web search via bing in the edge browser) Or, more likely, just windows doing inscrutable windows things

Either get EdgeDeflector https://github.com/da2x/EdgeDeflector or use either Firefox or Brave, as those have the method EdgeDeflector uses built-in to stop Windows from forcing Edge on you.

I'm trying to clean up an old drive that I backed up an ubuntu installation on years ago. I had wine installed, and in the wine folder there are a bunch of 'dosdevices' files labeled 'c:' and so on. Windows does not let me rename or delete these files even with admin permissions, anyone know how I can get shot of them?

Yeah I already do use Firefox, it's my regular browser. I have used Edge in the past for edge cases (pun not intended but I'll take it). I don't remember if I randomly mashed to wake up the computer, I suppose that's possible. Googling around I've found others pointing fingers at Cortana (who is disabled here, never used that app at all) and the lock screen, so I'll investigate that I guess, or else forget about it unless it happens again. Weird!

So if you join that thing you're "mining" by viewing ads or some poo poo. Or you can buy their cryptos for cash to donate to content creators, who may or may not ever get anything from it. And they've injected referral links for crypto exchanges into normal links. Basically it's run by crypto-bros. To me that's a fundamental trust issue.
