This is one of those situations where people complaining about the article has done far more to spread the word about piracy than the article itself did.

Made it to the end, thoughts... Not great, not terrible. Music was poo poo, controls were gash and I struggled at times with juggling between the different shoulder button permutations to do certain moves. Nothing was intuitive. Bosses were naff, can't say I enjoyed any of them aside from kraid and z-57. EMMIs loving sucked hard. Exploration was fun, I guess. 6/10. How much longer till Silksong?

Hopefully this does well enough that they finally put out prime trilogy and the old GBA games on switch. (If not I’ll finally get around to throwing dolphin on my iPad. And I own digital copies of everything on my Wii U that died and replacing the mother board and power supply didn’t fix it).

Just finished the game myself. 6:32 clear time, 47% items. My own thoughts: -Controls we’re very smooth but I agree that there were a lot of combos to keep track of and that’s tough sometimes with how speedy combat is. -Bosses were fun and cool, especially the last boss. Also they hit hard and this caused me to die a lot. -I like the EMMI encounters a bunch. Tense, not overlong, and there were only 7 of them. -The design and the story felt very old school, in a good way. It felt like I was playing a direct sequel to Fusion that would have come out like two years after it on the GameCube. -One thing I did not like was the cohesiveness of the environments. They looked good, especially in motion, but everything felt disjointed. Loved the premise of being trapped in the depths but it didn’t FEEL like I was. -Music was ok. Not a standout but not awful. The recurring themes from earlier games sounded nice. Overall, I’d give it a high 8. It was almost everything I wanted in a new Metroid.

Ending thoughts: Bit of a coward's move to take away monster Samus at the last cutscene. I guess that gets the federation off her back. Maybe she'll get to activate it at will in a future game? Goddamn, the main character really was Metroid, huh?

Finished the game last night. 100% in ~9:45 and must've died at least 50 times. It felt really good to be lost in a new Metroid after so many years and I like a lot of what they did to mix it up in this one, but there are some issues. General and mechanical musings: Biggest complaint is of course that some of the bosses are overtuned, Metroid has not been a Difficult™ game series in the past and shouldn't have started now. They deal multiple e-tanks worth of damage in a single hit and sometimes the telegraphing is a bit messy with all the visual noise on screen. They also drag on a bit too long and the emphasis of doing all these cool cinematic parries is lost when you end up doing them 2-3 times. Also want to fire whoever's idea it was to have the "you're doing damage!" indicator be the enemy glowing when...... every boss already glows. The EMMI sections were ehhhhh alright, SA-X was leagues better as a horror element since you never saw it coming. The cloak ability being bait is a complete waste, half the time you use it the damned things do nothing but beeline for you anyway and now you're pinned against a wall. I really wish they varied the mechanics with these more since every one felt like the same tedious thing and you end up trivializing them by running through with no consequences. Have them detect you in some other way than sound/motion, give one a cloak of its own but a much smaller detection range, have one region be a pair of them that coordinate to pincer you; there are so many good options. The controls are needlessly complex. There are too many buttons and permutations of holding/releasing them which could be simplified with the traditional mode selector instead of everything being dedicated. Once you have to start using the dpad and L3/R3 something has gone very wrong. Axiom Verge 2 had this exact same problem. Absolutely did not enjoy being railroaded throughout the entire campaign. Every time I got a new power and remembered exactly where to use it to get more resources only to run into some random rubble or fireshrooms was a slap in the face. Why? I'd much rather have an optional hint system that marks the general direction of your next progress as a means to avoid players getting lost. The loading times are really bad, other games on Switch don't suffer from this quite so badly. Some rooms even hitch as you enter them despite the initial load and kept faking me out into thinking yet another cutscene was triggering but nope it's just loading. Is it better on digital than physical? The delays on elevators as it opens the map to show where you'll be going should only be done the first time. Moving around feels super good and fluid, I wish they made more use of it. The only issue I had was the double jump not working reliably but that was quickly replaced with the space jump that didn't seem to have the same problem. Wanted more shinespark segments and overall better puzzles around finding hidden items. I really like that the music was more atmospheric in line with the 2D games than Prime's synthy scifi bleeps and bloops, really makes it feel like a sequel. Needed more memorable pieces though. Did anybody else go around trying to blow up all the glass tubes once you get powerbombs? I'm not sure what I expected to happen in some of them but once they introduced the mechanic of unlabeled blocks being explodable I went ham. I kinda wanted a first person view mode just to look at the scenery, what a pretty game. Lore nonsense: What was the deal with Samus turning into Mega Man and absorbing abilities out of defeated robot masters? The brains make sense because they're organic but EMMI are ostensibly federation tech and neither Metroids nor X are effective against machines. Also the way they vanish into thin air was laughable, let me run past their remains as a trophy when retreading areas. Isn't the whole threat of X that they can't be contained? But somehow Raven Beak has magical plot armor to not only keep them inside a certain region but outside of himself. And he doesn't share it with his troops. Seems like a much simpler weaponization prospect than luring known planet destroyer Samus Aran to your base. I never thought I'd say this but the game needed more Adam. Him being sassy in the intro was great, "Samus the pay is terrible why do you do this to yourself? Just go home and shoot some more lobsters." Definitely looking forward to where they take the series after this in another 20 years Samus being The Last Metroid has huge implications for galactic power balance, and now that we know the Chozo aren't extinct we might go on an adventure to find some more with Adam and Quiet Robe being sidekicks in our head. Maybe some kind of open world game where you actually take bounties and hunt down intel? Calling the planet ZDR made me laugh every time thinking of former forums coder Zen Death Robot. The speedrun tech is looking good, I should check out some full runs.

Loved the premise of being trapped in the depths but it didn’t FEEL like I was. Having one of the early areas literally be like "surface of a storming ocean", multiple zones being "natural light coming through big windows/openings" and then like 6 zones later congratulations you reached the surface did feel a little...off, retroactively. I guess they wanted to reinforce the "always move up if possible" directionality of the game still appreciated the variety in scenery even if some parts of dairon/burenia keep merging together in my mental layout

I found the controls to be easy in this game and Samus controlled really well, not stiff like in Fusion but still very precise. I also thought it was pretty easy to figure out where to go based on just looking at the map. Often I would find an area that I knew my new item would help me progress in, and there would be a teleporter near it that was the same color as a teleporter near me. Wow, it’s almost like they designed it that way on purpose?! There were only two teleporter colors I didn’t use during the regular story, cyan and orange. By the way, (endgame spoilers sort of) when I booted up my completed save, the game allowed me to use any teleporter to go to any other teleporter. Is that only unlocked after beating the end boss? Or does it unlock when you get to the final area?

Finished it today. Really, really wonderful game. For me the boss fights were fantastic - they are all in the sweet spot; to begin with they feel insurmountable (the final boss I said "I don't think I'll ever do this" after three quick and confused deaths) but there's something about them that really allows you to learn the patterns and get into a flow state with it. Dunno what it is. Beautiful. 10/10 although the music was unremarkable

Don't they explicitly make a point in Fusion that they can simply phase through all solid matter? You also see them going through walls all the time in both games which normal enemies never do except for burrowing wildlife.Blackbelt Bobman posted:By the way, (endgame spoilers sort of) when I booted up my completed save, the game allowed me to use any teleporter to go to any other teleporter. A message popped up saying "All Teleportals are now linked" and started letting me hop around. Would've made cleanup a lot easier if I knew that before running my rear end off all over the place. edit: Another thing with the EMMI: There was one point where I thought you'd be able to choose which one you kill to open up a non-linear progression and that made me really excited but I was ultimately disappointed when the doors are all locked. My one complaint about this game so far is that bosses have too much health. Like I fought the Chozo Soldier and it was easy to avoid and just vomit an unending torrent of plasma at it but it felt like I was doing it for too long. Also Samus is fragile as hell. Same Chozo soldier hits once for a full energy tank and that's kinda ridiculous.
