I'm starting to get the feeling Disco has an actual genuine policy of 'go back to the concept art, look at it, and then make your own modern interpretation without looking at the versions they came up with or stuff in between because this is a modern show that shouldn't be held back by those ancient primitive times when they couldn't do stuff good'

they want to use their own takes on elements from trek. unfortunately this perfectly reasonable idea is hampered by how ridiculously bad the mass of failsons are at this. the ferengi looks like poo poo because the people who decide what the ferengi looks like are incompetent.

It would be nice if they break out of the planet of hats thing and some Ferengi are Starfleet space socialists and others are traditional style life and there are populations that are something else and there's lots of our people with lots of different ways. But the way that apparently pretty much the entire galaxywide Andorian and Orion population decided to go bad at once after the burn I'm not expecting much.

It feels like Kurtzman mandated everything get redesigned because new show/Trek/generation/whatever, without putting any thought into how to actually update the designs. So they just went digging through old designs, because Trek Designs!!, without actually considering why they were never used beyond early concept sketches.

It's still better than the Disco Tellarites, at least you can vaguely tell what species they're meant to be. Not even short any more. And I don't even know what's up with the Prodigy tellarite, I think maybe they showed them only photos of the Disco Tellarites and said 'make a young chubby goofy version of this' so it was like a game of telephone and they ended with absolutely no common features with the original Tellarites. When the first pictures came out a lot of people thought he was Neelix's race.

The big red one is apparently a Brikar, which is a species that was created for the New Frontier book series. They are from either the Alpha or Beta Quadrant.
