I'm not completely sure, but I think the r136a1 is probably in reference to this star: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R136a1

The 'JKSPT' bit I'm not sure. My first inclination was the member's initials but it's too short, so I'd guess its a phrase being shortened.

It's member initials.

SongSun Vocal Teaser
Hyunbin Rap Teaser
Jia Kelly Soeun Performance Teaser

Next one will be Mire Jinha Performance Teaser, now that we know the first J one was Jia.

And yeah it's almost definitely meant to be the star.

So this isn't technically k-pop (its a japanese group), but they've been taking strong influences from korean pop for their whole carrier as opposed to more 'standard' j-pop stuff. Figured some of you might enjoy a listen.

Not my favorite release from them overall, but not bad.

I guess she probably saw the bad comments because she wanted to monitor reaction to the new track. GP999's fan reaction seems insane, like it's kind of a bad survival show compared to every other one I've watched so I don't know if that's contributing to it but even the subreddit for it is more insane than I expected. Tiffany's probably thankful she's just being edited out all the time.

That was pretty intense, huh?

So in my Twice deep dive, I ended up watching the entirety of 'Sixteen' over the course of a week or so. It's kind of insane seeing what these girls had to endure but also very :unsmith: seeing where they are now. I know the show is reality TV and heavily edited/manipulated, so I can only imagine how much worse it might actually be for a trainee. Is JYPE considered one of the better labels? Even for a TV show, a lot of the feedback was shockingly cruel lol.

Just some other random thoughts: I didn't realize Somi could've potentially been in Twice. I was all :wtf: when I saw her as a contestant lmao. The one photographer guy was a dick, gently caress that guy. I also couldn't stop thinking that JYP looks like the Korean version of Gordon Ramsay.

Still working my through Twice's discography. Enjoyed most of their MVs, and honestly didn't mind the cutesy earlier stuff. I still much prefer everything in Eyes Wide Open, and Alcohol Free might be my favorite track, but still have a lot to listen to :) Not sure how I feel about their J-pop tracks.

SHINee's back

I think the majority of GP999 viewers who are active on social media are

a. young
b. taking it too seriously
c. have no idea how competition shows or reality television works

Point C feeds heavily into point B. I've been enjoying GP999 immensely, myself. I think the main issue is people don't realize that judges critiques for interim evals or the main performances go on much longer than what we see in the show, but the editors are only going to show what is relevant for whatever storyline they are focusing on for a given episode, and that will often be the more dramatic stuff. It also doesn't help that Sunmi has never been able to control her expressions on TV lmao, so it gives Mnet a lot to work with.

It also doesn't help that the judges for this show don't take as large of a mentor role as in Produce seasons, so viewers of that show are expecting to see more of the judging panel actually working with these girls rather than just evaluating them.

This isn't the first time Sunmi has responded to how she may appear in the final edit of the show.

JYPE is one of the big three (along with SM and YG). And yeah the off-air stuff that happened before that show was way worse. Momo has talked about the extremes she was pushed to of not eating for a week before a monthly evaluation and even said she went to sleep one night thinking she would not wake up again. There was a specific trainer at the company that was fired, but who knows if he was just a scapegoat because obviously the whole industry is pretty rampant with that kind of treatment of these young people.

The feedback being so blunt and cruel is a cultural thing. Superiors/bosses are expected to be very tough and demanding, and while that doesn't make it easier on trainees or less damaging mentally, it isn't as shocking to them or Korean audiences to hear the photographer call Jihyo heavy or tell them a performance was awful.

You should definitely watch the Youtube doc on Twice's tour though for a good palette cleanser after Sixteen. Though there are some real tear jerker moments in there for sure, especially with Jeongyeon and Mina, and you see a lot of how exhausting the tour/Idol life is on them, but it also shows plenty of great footage of them basking in what they sacrifice so much for.

All that poo poo goes way back. There are multiple interviews with CL etc. of 2NE1 saying that they constantly got called ugly by YG, get plastic surgery, straight up poo poo talking their appearances in public, etc. (and then got replaced by a younger "prettier" version of themselves - and that's a direct quote from him too - but that's beside the point and me being salty) Glad that rear end in a top hat is gone but the harsh stuff remains.

It's fascinating to me how brutal the treatment is of trainees/idols in the industry is so well known yet I often see large portions of k-pop fandoms labeled as extremely toxic. You'd hope that wouldn't be the case, and obviously it's an unavoidable issue because durr internet :downsbravo:, but it's crazy how someone could have anything negative/hurtful/cruel to say about any k-pop artist when given just a glimpse of their extreme struggles [edit] unless said k-pop artist is legit an rear end in a top hat or piece of poo poo or something lol.

Fans are just assholes because expect a lot. Kpop stans especially since their whole thing is to get their fav's stream numbers up and then criticize small details about these groups or individuals thanks to the parasocial relationship they develop. Unlike western pop, kpop has so much media dedicated to these artists and they appear on countless shows and what not. Not saying this doesn't happen over here (or maybe I'm just not paying too much attention) but goddamn it is easy to fall into a rabbit hole following just one group on youtube alone.

Skipping the EDM comebacks was entirely a matter of someone's preferences.

The treatment of trainees is something that I think is slowly improving. It still isn't good in general, but I'm noticing more stories shift to like "we're sick of eating these 2 meal options" because they're on a restricted diet instead of a "eat half a meal for days to try to hit whatever weight goal". Mental health management is also an area that I wouldn't label as "good" but has been actively improving, at least in terms of labels being willing to do stuff. I don't know how korean fans react to that subject but overall western fans seem to want it to improve (even if they don't grasp what that entails).

I know, I just went in with the expectation to not to like their EDM stuff at all and was pleasantly surprised :)

That said, everyone was pretty spot on with their recommendations based on what little I've revealed about what I enjoy: Cry For Me and Perfect World are among my favorites. Really love Like Ooh Ah as well. Kura Kura and Fanfare is up there too atm, and yeah, I don't think there's a track in Eyes Wide Open that I don't like. I can't stop listening to Alcohol Free though; that post-chorus is so fun and lol at the JYP whisper.

e: thoughts

I'm not sure about one thing with the song but more listens will probably smooth it out, but aside from that I really like the song. Has a bunch of like.. 2012-ish kpop sound going on but doesn't sound dated, and the breakdown is really good. The choreo bits we got look like its probably pretty solid there.

The MV... personally didn't like it that much. It feels like they sort of wanted to go with some of the 'stylized+wacky/silly' vibes that you see in a lot of EXID's videos, but like not everyone was on board or understood how to make that work.

I was sort of surprised that the did a whole thing at their show case for the sub-units, but I enjoyed it. '-18' let their dancers do some sharper stuff than the whole group goes for, and 'got your back' did some more live vocal work than usually goes on (because of the whole, singing+dancing thing being super hard). I think they should have just gone ahead and given them mic stands though.

The instrumental coming back abruptly works a lot better in the performance, I think its just a weird cut in the music video. Legit thought maybe it upload got corrupted or something the very first time I heard it, but I had to go back on the performance to see if it was the same or not. Feels like Mire got a lot of lines in this song, or it might just be the placement of where they are in the song making them feel prominent.

Similarly to the MV, the outfit design is lacking for me. Outside of a general color theme and maybe a touch of 'wacky aliens' there isn't much cohesion. Comes across as just sort of 'loud' visually, but just too cluttered for me to find interesting I think.
