Having read some of the comics, I can't even guess how the Eternals pitch went. Did they have to make the Ancient Alien Race War movie so Ike Perlmutter would approve Shang Chi and Black Panther?

i think it really was just a matter of well guardians of the galaxy worked and no one heard of those guys either and just ignoring the fact the fact that the guardians of the galaxy got pretty far just on the basis of their all having distinct character designs

Even other bottom of the barrel Marvel teams at least have one or two characters that stand out as interesting weirdos like Guardians of the Galaxy Agents of Atlas you've got a a gorilla, retro robot, and retro spaceman.  Alpha Flight has a sasquatch and Captain Canada. The wackiest Eternal is the physical child that is actually 10,000 year old.
