'Waterstones' is currently trending in the UK because...Julie Bindel's new book isn't displayed prominently enough in her local store, which is evidence of a woke booksellers' conspiracy intended to silence her.

Really feels like this country is trying to fit in at least two unhinged breakdowns per day now.

Absolutely. According to the Scottish Government in 2019 57% of rural Scotland is owned "privately". Andy Wightman put it even more starkly: half of rural Scotland is owned by 432 people. Pretty sure David Cameron's father-in-law owns half of Jura, some Danish businessman has over 200,000 acres.

Country rules.

Dunno, 2 breakdowns per day are just about 60 Bpm, but UK newspapers are spinning at 100 Bpm at minimum, as far as I can tell.

If you are approached by the police, flag down a bus driver. If you are approached by a bus, call the police. Then hitchhike down the A30 tailed by a train of police cars and buses. And an actual train on holiday from Scotrail.

Puts me in mind of the fash who accidentally converted himself to Islam

quote:

A few years later, I returned to the north-east - I'd got a job as a chef. When I saw a group of Muslims at an Islamic book stall in Newcastle, I thought, "Here's another group I can wind up; I probably know more about Islam than they do." But I was shocked when I approached them; they were very knowledgeable. I kept going back because I enjoyed debating with them, and after four weeks they challenged me.

They wanted me to try to disprove the Qur'an and convince them my way of life was better. They said if I succeeded they would become Christians, but if I failed I should become a Muslim. I accepted the challenge. But after months of returning to the stall and debating, I realised I was losing and panicked. I stopped going to the stall.

Three years had passed when I bumped into one of the guys from the stall. As I thought about what I wanted to do, I felt as if a big rock were crushing me, but when I told him I wanted to convert, I had a total sense of peace. I made my final decision on Wednesday November 17 1996 and converted the following day. I have been close to the Hizb ut-Tahrir group ever since: I became a Muslim because of them; they were the guys at the stall.

I'm not reading them ironically, I genuinely want to know what the UK thought leaders think. It's just that UK thought leaders are apparently constantly hooting like a Gibbon.

The rags that threaten to be persuasive are the likes of Die Welt. And if I ever contract liberal brain worms from one of those publications you have my permission to mercy kill me immediately.

Few pages back, but I'm getting into audiobook narration and am genuinely concerned that it's amazon's latest attempt to move their union-breaking into acting, at least as far as audiobooks are concerned.

The fact that there are few narrators is largely because you're kind of expected to record, produce, edit and provide background fx / music yourself. Bigger titles will throw cash at a celebrity to do it, but smaller titles are reliant on paying some guy recording in his bedroom with a duvet over his head.

Also that Amazon are absolutely unwilling to do anything about the scams, like clients refusing to pay, clients relisting the book to get out of paying royalies, and the huge pay gouge (you get paid per hour of audio produced, not per hour worked).

It's weird because I worked producing smut for their self publishing arm for a few years, and I genuinely think that the deal they offer authors is better in almost every way than trad pub deals, just in terms of the royalities.

There are hundreds of narrators, in part because publishers have been uploading back catalogues of audio cassette taped recordings. You also have this thing where anyone can record an out of copyright book, so you find a whole load of classics at a deep discount by countless individuals.

Maybe there are a few popular narrators within specialist genres but that's people complaining because they themselves have a limited world view.

Like, there maybe even thousands of narrators on there idk just one page of my library has 49 narrators on it.

They're seasonal worker visas, so it's not just the normal "all visas are like that anyway", they're specifically for a short-term period.

Still you might get some people from very poor countries (after all it's not just EU-only), but I suspect the temporary nature of it makes it a lot less attractive for jobs which are not actually seasonal.
