Well, I have the PowerTower Pro 250MP actually.

Those old CD-rom drives often had a headphone jack and volume control.

Did anyone actually use those? I remember using the output only once or twice, when for some reason the sound card of my PC was absent or not cooperative and i still wanted the Grand Theft Auto soundtrack.

But otherwise, who would plug their headphone into the CD-r? You can't hear any game sounds or whatever if you plug it into that output.

You could listen to a CD while doing anything else too.

But what's the benefit over just using CD Player in Windows 95 (or media player/winamp in 98) and using the soundcard output?

I can imagine it being useful in the DOS era when multitasking wasn't yet a thing, but in my memory the mainstream use of CD-ROM started with windows 95.

You may not have the little cable between the CD-ROM drive and the sound card hooked up.

I used an old AT powersupply and a leftover CD drive as a CD player by my bed for a while - but that was one of the drives that had play/stop/skip buttons.

I stuffed one full of everything you can put in a Mac clone- G4, Radeon 7000, ATA card, USB, 1gig of RAM, every kind of external drive I could find, the whole kitchen sink.
Why? poo poo, I dunno. Runs 9.1 like a bat out of hell, but even Panther is pretty slow.

Here are the guts of my remarkably dirty unicorn machine...

It's a 1999 G4 500mhz with 1.5GB RAM...not too weird....then you look at the card slots. The back two are 8MB Voodoo2s with SLI, not that odd...the next one toward the front is card is a Formac ProFormance 3-5c with 32MB of Video RAM. This was one of four video cards ever made (and the only one for the Macintosh) that could power this...

That is a(n), incredibly dirty because I pulled it from the back of a closet, SGI 1600SW flat-panel, vintage 1998. It used a variation on the OpenLDI display interface which is an adaptation of the normal FPD laptop display connector and nobody made cards for except for that Formac, an Oxygen Labs, a Number Nine, and Siemans . It has a resolution of 1600x1024 at 110DPI at 60hz. It is an amazing monitor that will not run on anything except those cards because of that goddamn connector. Also, the only drivers I can find for will run on OS 9.2.1 at the latest so I can't even run OSX with it. For that or for running the Voodoo 2s, I have an AGP ATI Rage 128 Pro 16MB in the closest slot. That machine also has a built-in ZIP250, and a Jaz2 and is absolute nonsense all the way through.

Man that thing is a HomerCar for sure, but that's pretty awesome. I'm definitely feeling the lack of USB on the one I have. It's tough to go from a place where we just assume everything USB will magically work to.......not having that.

I had two of those come through for recycling, and I rescued them from certain doom. I had nothing that could output that wacky LDI signal, so I had to sell them as-is, but given what they are, I'm assuming they went to enthusiasts who actually want to use them, which definitely :feelsgood:

I'm not sure any of this is old enough, but anyone who wants any, or preferably all, of

* AGP radeon 9800 - 256M/128 bit (unknown if works, don't have any AGP machines)
* PCI ATI TV Wonder 650 (probably works - the PC I pulled it from just had a dead PSU)
* PCI no-name card with 3xUSB and 3x firewire ports (same)
* PCI-E passively cooled full-height PCIE 512M Sapphire Radeon HD4670 (this one works enough to come up in at least 2D mode in Linux and the caps look good, so I'd say this one works)
* 2x patriot PC3200 400mhz DDR dimms cl 2-3-2-5, PDC-1G3200LLK (unknown, couldn't get it to powerup enough to test)
* a PCI-E Dell 4350 adaptor, 1/2 height card, full height bracket, no fan (parts only)
* 2x2GB DDR2 667Mhz ram (crucial + kinston, works, compatible with Celeron 420)

and are willing to pay the postage from NOLA (close-enough in SA gift certs is fine) please PM (or email me if you don't have PMs.)

If I don't get any interest Jefferson Parish has a recycling program for electronics so it won't [*] end up in landfill, and if you happen to live nearby you can also have a vostro 200 case with a Celeron 420 on a dying motherboard (no PSU)

Sorry to be boring, I promise that tomorrow I will see if I can lay my hands on my old Palm TX and post a few photos. Be interesting to see if it still powers up and/or if I have a working power adaptor for it (remember when every single brand of phone had at least one unique power connector)?

[*] at the very least, I'm sure they'll wait until the bin is full before putting it into the landfill.
