Even in the distant future, the Spanish Sahara remains contested. Here's the link to the guy who made it. Here's another take that is significant in that it takes a stab at the melted Antarctica archipelago.

Vincent Van Goatse posted:Cold War secrecy.jpg SOVIET-ERA JOKE posted:Every day Svetlana Vladimirovna works a long shift at the machining factory beside the smelter at the edge of her city in central Russia. The factory makes the best beds in the Soviet Union, all of them of exceptionally fine steel. But no one in Svetlana’s city, including Svetlana, has a bed. This is an unfortunate but perfectly understandable matter of policy. The comrades who run the factory, and who have designed such magnificent and marvelous beds, better than any beds in America, have decided in the spirit of the revolution and correct socialist principles that they must give beds first to all of the hospitals, and to the army, and to the universities, and to the collective farms, and to many other important institutions necessary for the people and the government in the world’s most rapidly and inevitably advancing socialist society. To do this, the factory must work round the clock. Three shifts a day. And only rarely stopping on holidays. It is understood that the workers need beds. But it is not yet the workers’ turn. Only recently did the cosmonauts receive beds!

So they had a bunch of AKs and couldn't figure out how to go from there to having beds? Stalin's bank robbing ghost is disappointed. The cap in the south of Ireland should be black, and Northern Ireland's hat is in Russia for some reason.

Minenfeld! posted:Is this supposed to be the official map of planet? The landmasses are from the handmade default map in the game (although most people will usually play on auto-generated maps), but the political geography and that map in particular are from some guy's fanart I found. The default even has a bunch of landmark names. There's a lot of these hobbyist mapmakers on Deviantart. I guess it's a great platform for if you wanna tell a story with artwork but can't tell a full work of fiction. Here's a guy's interpretation of Earth in Alpha Centauri at I guess around the time they sent the mission. Some of this is directly based on fluff, Free Scotland, Christian States of America, wartorn Africa, but there's a lot of liberties taken as well. https://www.deviantart.com/rvbomally/art/Sid-Meier-s-Alpha-Centauri-734120815

Arglebargle III posted:Sunny Mesa supremacy I always liked starting by the Freshwater Sea, especially if you can get to one of the two spots where a base will act as a canal to the Sea of Pholus, letting your Sea Formers go back and forth between oceans. By the way, SMAC/SMAX is available on gog.com for like five bucks, and that edition runs perfectly on modern Windows (and even under Wine for the Linux nerds). If you google around, there's a simple .ini file tweak that lets you use all of your modern hi-res screen instead of being limited to 1024x768, or whatever it was that screens were running in 1999.

Freshwater sea is good, but I feel like the sunny mesa continent was better laid out for a big faction with lots of bases, and the left side continent was too long and narrow
