Oh yeah, they had to reduce some ferry schedules due to worker shortages. Definitely reinforced image of some folks I know who refuse to accept that living on high income islands with idyllic scenery, near non-existent crime, and a relaxed way of life might mean slight inconvenience when something disrupts ferry availability. One person I know posted long rants about how dare the ferry system decide to spitefully collapse the island economies as don't they know the vending machines at the ferry terminal are totally inadequate when someone has to take on the horrible fate of... waiting an extra half hour for a boat as there's a drat pandemic? Same person was also infuriated that all health care plans don't cover helicopter medivacs.

Trumpers going after Biden have nothing. Oh, corrupt failsons are bad now? Being senile is bad now? The Trump movement has, predictably, collapsed back into being totally normal republicans, as the only traction they're getting on anything is saying leaving Afghanistan is bad and Biden is a big spending lib, two things that notably Trump also supported.

Sometimes Highway Patrol is also another name for State Police / State Troopers.

All state level police agencies have investigators (detectives) and / or civilian support staff specialists that work on stuff dealing with computers, whether its normal poo poo like going through a murder suspect's hard drive or phone, or heinous poo poo like going through a pedo's hard drive or phone.

Bag on regular cops all you want, but dealing with child abuse crimes is horrendous on people's mental health, and it's good that there are units investigating and prosecuting poo poo like that.

In Washington state they operate the SIGINT surveillance plane that carries a dirtbox for gathering mobile phone traffic, tail number N305DK.

After the Seattle PD got hit with a consent decree for abusing mass surveillance devices in 2012 they farmed the local work out to the State Patrol too.

They're focusing more on protestors than on child porn these days.

Hyrax Attack! posted:

Oh yeah that stuff is fascinating. It's interesting to learn how it's standard procedure for detectives to have honeypot FB accounts so when they're trying to locate a suspect they just send the guy a friend request and try to arrange a meet up. It works a surprising amount of the time without even having to leave their desks.

Another fun tactic they like to use: buy location data for a particular celphone from databrokers instead of getting a warrant.

There's also been an increase in police purchasing information or even services from criminal organizations such as SIM swapping when they want to evade having to request a warrant. Good times!

Yeah the head coaches of football/basketball are basically the highest paid state employees everywhere.

https://worldscholarshipforum.com/wealth/highest-paid-state-employees-in-the-usa/

It's somewhat misleading, as those coaches get paid by the universities, but the universities basically take donations from boosters specifically to pay for those coaches, plus the sport revenue usually ends up covering those salaries as well. I waffle about the morality of it, as it's not like taxpayers are fronting the coach salaries and the public university funding goes elsewhere.

Wait they're illegally obtaining evidence rather than get a warrant? I dont think the courts would like that much. Thats like the exact scenario that the exclusionary doctrine was constructed to manage

IIRC the workaround they use is making the people they get info or services from CIs (criminal/confidential informants).

Buying data from databrokers isn't illegal, FWIW.

Well, we lost 13 chuds to the Washington state vaccine mandate yesterday. Only two of them were any sort of loss to the organization and it was a nice house cleaning of lovely employees overall.
