Why are piles of beans appearing around my girlfriend's parents house?

quote:

This is not a troll post.

My girlfriend's mom and stepdad live in Palm Springs California, near the desert. They're staying at a temporary house while the sale and partial renovation of there new house is happening.

Lately, my girlfriend's mom has been finding small piles of dried red beans in various hidden places. Under the bed, in a bucket in a closet, in the bathroom, usually dark and hidden places.

This morning, my girlfriend's mom was taking her hair out of a bun and a few beans fell into the sink.

They are definitely beans, they're not poop, everyone I've told this to assumes poop, but I've seen pictures and they are clearly beans. They don't have any of these beans in the house, and it's unclear where they are coming from.

Does anyone have any idea what would cause this? I've tried googling it, but all I get is recipes for beans.

tl;dr there are small piles of beans appearing randomly in a house with no explanation.

edit: I forgot to add they don't have any dried red beans in the house.

edit: pictures of the beans https://imgur.com/a/cFMi0cT

UPDATE: Why are piles of beans appearing around my girlfriend's parents house?

Sorry for the delay!

So after talking with my girlfriends mom and step dad, they think they've found the culprit.

They found a bag of beans deep in a closet with a few holes in it. They called an exterminator and found out it was likely a Pack Rat, credit to Panik66 for correctly identifying it!

The last I heard, they successfully captured one, but didn't send over any pictures of one.

I enjoy the resume/job application advice ones where literally no matter what Allison claims as normal practice the comments are full of HR managers declaring they'd throw away an otherwise fine application on sight for doing that

turns out sometimes all a manager can tell you is that power and the whimsical exercise thereof are the only things that matter in the workplace

Wikipedia posted:

A pack rat midden is a debris pile constructed by a woodrat. A midden may preserve the materials incorporated into it for up to 50,000 years, thus may be analyzed to reconstruct their original environment, and comparisons between middens allow a record of vegetative and climate change to be built. Examinations and comparisons of pack rat middens have largely supplanted pollen records as a method of study in the regions where they are available.

In the absence of rock crevices or caves, the dens are often built under trees or bushes. The pack rats will also use plant fragments, animal dung, and small rocks in building the den. The vast majority of the materials will be from a radius of several dozen yards of the nest. Woodrats often urinate on the debris piles; sugar and other substances in the urine crystallize as it dries out, creating a material known as amberat, which under some conditions can cement the midden together, and can encase plant fragments, pellets and other debris in an amber-like matrix. The resilience of the middens is aided by three factors. The crystallized urine dramatically slows the decay of the materials in the midden; the dry climate of the American Southwest further slows the decay; and middens protected from the elements under rock overhangs or in caves survive longer.

My lovely manager story was that I worked at a fast-food place in high school. At the end of the summer after my senior year, I was getting ready to go off to college, so I gave my notice to the manager, three weeks ahead of my leave-date. The manager told me this was unacceptable, that he'd never be able to get a new employee with only three weeks notice, and that I'd need to work at least six weeks more so he could find someone to replace me.

Needless to say, I wasn't going to skip the first three weeks of college just to make his job slightly easier, so it was quite easy to tell him that I was leaving in three weeks, and he would have to figure out things himself.

That's when you just quit on the spot. No one is going to know you didn't give notice for a high school fast food job, and if they did somehow they would not give a gently caress.

For most countries the idea of "property values" is mostly something out of your control and a matter of supply and demand and location. Locations are good because they are close to the city centre, near a metro station, or otherwise naturally desirable due to their natural and urban context. In the US though most houses are just in generic suburban or exurban sprawl that totally lack any sense of place, so what makes one generic nearly identical suburban area better than another is how strongly the people follow a sort of cargo cult belief in doing "things that make property values go up" and avoiding "things that make property values go down". In most places nice and well kept houses are a symptom of high property values, in a lot of the US people think the reverse is true and that you can just kinda fake it till you make it which will make values go up. Its like people seeing that people with high incomes generally drive fancy cars, so if they buy a fancy car and park it in their driveway their income will go up and if their neighbours don't also do this it will hurt their chances. It seems insane and backwards outside of a US context, but within the US it actually works to an extent because people believe it works. It becomes this sort of common wisdom thing that the one house on the block that doesn't have a perfect lawn brings down property values. Everyone knows the house without drapes of a HOA approved colour is hurting property values. Everyone knows your wife parking her old Saturn in the driveway instead of hiding it in the garage is bringing down property values. No one actually cares, but it's common wisdom so it can end up affecting prices through sheer belief.

Public school are funded by property taxes. More expensive homes are charged more in property tax, which is used to disproportionately fund those school districts rather than pooling this money through an area/state.

There is not quick way out of that. People who are paying more in property/school taxes don't want that money leaving their school districts, people paying less in property taxes don't want to pay more in property taxes. And even if you changed that money dynamic it would probably take a decade or more to see a significant difference.

Mom planted some native wildflowers along her fenceline with the road to keep cheatgrass from growing there. Came home one day to find somebody had pulled up the entire row and just left them there. If they thought they were weeds, why leave them to go to seed? If they didn't, why pull them up? Mom was furious, I don't think anyone's taken credit for "helping" her yet.

Well, the "quick" way out is to stop paying public schools with property taxes and have the state pay for them (out of all the taxes they gather including property)

but then of course we run into the same problem you describe because people are selfish wanks

I (28F) caught my boyfriend (29M) loving dough???

Throwaway for obvious reasons.

My boyfriend and I have a long distance relationship. He lives in New Jersey and I live Toronto. We met 6 years ago and despite the long distance, we've had an amazing relationship. We take turns going to visit each other and this month was my turn to visit. His birthday was this past weekend. He knows how busy I've been st work so I told him I need to postpone the trip until next weekend and he understood. However, I was just planning to suprise him. I have a key to his home so I was planning on flying in when he was at work, decorating his house and have his gifts and favourite meal ready for when he walked in. This did not happen...

I walked in all excited with all my bags thinking I'd have the house to myself for a few hours to get everything ready but when I open the door I immediately see him in the kitchen with his shorts down loving a big slab of raw dough. I didn't even know what to say!!! Jerking off to porn or using some sex toy...sure. But raw dough? And also why was he not at work?

I went upstairs to the bedroom to collect my thoughts and he comes a few minutes later telling me that he was fired from his job over a month ago and was top embarrased to tell me. He also said he felt embarrassed regarding the dough. I thought ok who cares about the dough. It was a private, personal moment. We carry on with the night I had planned.

Just before we fall asleep that night he tells me that he came in the dough and has it sitting UNDER THE SINK. He then asks me if he could bake it for me tomorrow to eat. I was so repulsed I just left the room.

WHAT DO I DO??? 6 years and I never knew the man was a freak.
