I enjoy the resume/job application advice ones where literally no matter what Allison claims as normal practice the comments are full of HR managers declaring they'd throw away an otherwise fine application on sight for doing that turns out sometimes all a manager can tell you is that power and the whimsical exercise thereof are the only things that matter in the workplace A Wizard of Goatse fucked around with this message at 21:45 on Oct 19, 2021 |

The really dumb thing about disrespectful! Manager: 2 paychecks is a goddamn month for most workers. With no income, and no government support(because she had a job on paper) and the employee was still there. This employee is an asset to be treasured and the boss is such a moron they want to get rid of them.

As an HR guy (yeah yeah) the people who complain the loudest when their pay is wrong is which group, do you think? That’s right, managers. I was really pleased with the HR response in this story because that’s precisely the response I would have given.

Examinations and comparisons of pack rat middens have largely supplanted pollen records as a method of study in the regions where they are available.

Bobulus posted:My lovely manager story was that I worked at a fast-food place in high school. At the end of the summer after my senior year, I was getting ready to go off to college, so I gave my notice to the manager, three weeks ahead of my leave-date. The manager told me this was unacceptable, that he'd never be able to get a new employee with only three weeks notice, and that I'd need to work at least six weeks more so he could find someone to replace me. That's when you just quit on the spot. No one is going to know you didn't give notice for a high school fast food job, and if they did somehow they would not give a gently caress.

Baronjutter posted:For most countries the idea of "property values" is mostly something out of your control and a matter of supply and demand and location. Locations are good because they are close to the city centre, near a metro station, or otherwise naturally desirable due to their natural and urban context. In the US though most houses are just in generic suburban or exurban sprawl that totally lack any sense of place, so what makes one generic nearly identical suburban area better than another is how strongly the people follow a sort of cargo cult belief in doing "things that make property values go up" and avoiding "things that make property values go down". In most places nice and well kept houses are a symptom of high property values, in a lot of the US people think the reverse is true and that you can just kinda fake it till you make it which will make values go up. Its like people seeing that people with high incomes generally drive fancy cars, so if they buy a fancy car and park it in their driveway their income will go up and if their neighbours don't also do this it will hurt their chances. It seems insane and backwards outside of a US context, but within the US it actually works to an extent because people believe it works. It becomes this sort of common wisdom thing that the one house on the block that doesn't have a perfect lawn brings down property values. Everyone knows the house without drapes of a HOA approved colour is hurting property values. Everyone knows your wife parking her old Saturn in the driveway instead of hiding it in the garage is bringing down property values. No one actually cares, but it's common wisdom so it can end up affecting prices through sheer belief. in the US the residential property market cares a lot about schools like, a lot a lot. and vice versa as well

When I've done payroll and there were direct deposit issues our bank let us know immediately that there was an issue and we were able to get a check printed ASAP to give the employee on pay day. Why was the employee not getting the money the only way they knew something happened??

A Wizard of Goatse posted:circles back to 'is that because the rich people neighborhoods have good public schools or because good public schools make rich people move in', unfortunately nobody out here is willing to test the hypothesis by funding their local public schools so the world may never know Public school are funded by property taxes. More expensive homes are charged more in property tax, which is used to disproportionately fund those school districts rather than pooling this money through an area/state. There is not quick way out of that. People who are paying more in property/school taxes don't want that money leaving their school districts, people paying less in property taxes don't want to pay more in property taxes. And even if you changed that money dynamic it would probably take a decade or more to see a significant difference.

My family and I favor a "controlled wild" aesthetic that occasionally goes through some rough patches, sometimes requires a boatload of effort, but we generally find it more pleasing and less stressful than a manicured yard. Lots of bushy plants and wildflowers, pruning problem branches but otherwise letting trees do their own thing. Mom planted some native wildflowers along her fenceline with the road to keep cheatgrass from growing there. Came home one day to find somebody had pulled up the entire row and just left them there. If they thought they were weeds, why leave them to go to seed? If they didn't, why pull them up? Mom was furious, I don't think anyone's taken credit for "helping" her yet.
