gently caress, I wish I could pull that off. My company (it was bought out by a start up from a century-old institution in 2019) is leveraged to hell and our creditors say we can't use their profits to give people raises. The money can be used to buy more assets, but keeping long-term career professionals isn't a priority, so a lot of senor folks way above me are jumping ship, many without another job to go to. More work, more bullshit, less pay after inflation. My job is so goddamned easy im not going anywhere anytime soon, but morale is shattered.

Smith and Rousseau and Hobbes and Locke and all those guys made arguments about human nature from a mythical 'humans in their natural state' or 'primitive humans'.

Marx lived at a later time when science, evidence, and so on were becoming better foundations for argumentation (and the foundations of the ideologies we live in now) and anthropology as a field was starting. Marx was big on actual history as it happened and evidence, and actual human societies rather than imagined ones, and used that rather than logic as a foundation.

It's a huge misread of marxism

actually Econ as it exists in colleges now does not try to explain history really at all, except maybe the great depression in the USA. It's a bad storyteller and it's got no interest in the real world.

Marx is writing about the corn laws and enclosure of the commons and poo poo that factually predates his model of contemporary society as part of how his model came to be, it's essential to use factual historical information for him to be right. capitalism got built brick by brick and he's accounting for it

if that makes sense. it really rules

Antonymous

You would never in a million years open a modern micro econ textbook and read 'here's an actually spreadsheet from the accounting department of xyz corporation' and have it track decisions about labor and capital allocation and see if the company became more profitable

because empiricism is against the foundations of modern econ

it is incredibly funny because with all these people you can tell exactly where their political philosophy 101 syllabus stopped and they never bothered to read anything more

alternatively, they do know and are just attempting to desperately ignore a couple centuries of developments in political thought and in particular a certain german philosopher

One thing they'll do (if it's the small business arsehole and not the big company) is lose your last paycheck(s)

No they can't legally, but what are you going to do about it?

that was one part of it. the right wing and the business community showered money on schools and departments that would perform research into their preferred economics views, and also use the influence they bought to run mccarthyist pressure campaigns against left-wing academics. they also set up the think tank ecosystem to create an alternative academia that would be fully under their ideological control. the intellectual products these "scholars" produced would be cited by the elected officials they controlled to justify right-wing economic policy and would be distilled for public consumption by the newspapers and through popular media like milton friedman's famous ultralibertarian PBS series, or john stossel or mike rowe.

the powell memo, which said that public opinion at the time was alarmingly pro-union and pro-"communism", argues that business interests needed to do this kind of thing to change popular opinion to be pro-business. the memo is sometimes thought of as a grand conspiratorial master plan where all the business interests took their marching orders from but it was really just sort of documenting a spreading desire within the business community to use their money to set up the beginnings of the kind of thing that would eventually become eg the koch network

I'm a little late with quitchat but here's my story:

6 years ago I was at a horrible job where everyone was leaving. I went into the office and said I'm quitting, I'm putting my two weeks in. The manager said okay you just got to fill out this form.

But there were no forms. So many people were quitting they were out of the forms to quit.

The manager told me sorry, you can't quit today. We're going to print more forms, come and quit tomorrow.

So I worked my full shift. Then I came into the office the next day and yes there were more forms and yes I did put in my two weeks notice.

I like to say I gave them 15 days notice.
