Yeah it’s the reason I prefer teaching wrestlers over complete beginners. It has nothing to do with mat awareness (which IS nice), and everything to do with already having that grind mentality instilled. Also: that energy? That spark? Embrace it. 2 of our black belts left a while back and they really were the soul of the gym. Without them cranking up intensity the other colored belts became less interested, and now our classes are like 80% less than 1 year white belts and the energy seems more like a social club than the group of killers it was. Injuries will happen more in nogi than in the gi. Particularly with lower belts that dont control their limbs yet. Ive been knee'd in the face so many times attempting to pressure pass lower belts that Im just used to it now. edit: also wear a mouth guard, particularly during nogi. It helps! yeah i always wear a mouth guard anyway. i like my teeth where they are. i'm glad i went to yesgi this morning. i think it helped with some of the soreness. i'm going to ask my wife to work on my neck, though. it's definitely tweaky. there's nogi class tomorrow night, too but i'll have to build up to that. once a week i think is gonna be plenty for now. i'm not as young as those dudes and fighting isn't my job. i think probably half of them were fighting for a living (or close to it), maybe 40% were working on trying to fight for a living, and the other 10% of us were just chew toys.

is a dentist-made mouthguard at all worth it over just replacing boil n bites a couple times a year? it's ~$180 but the samples looked and felt pretty similar to chunky boil n bites

Lol lex Friedman has this ongoing topic on ties in grappling. Last I checked the leading theory was the same: seems bad but actually not much you can really do with it. I've been a gi player most of the time but the last month or 2 due to schedule I've been almost all no-gi. Did a gi class today and actually feel more tired and sore! It's just easier for people to hang on you or create static positions. Was surprised by that.

RE: Mouthguards I just picked up a Guardlab and am very happy with it. RE: ties in grappling, Lex talked with Danaher about it and Danaher's response was to wear one of those goofy cowboy ties or a clipon. He talked about it with GSP too but I forget exactly what GSP's stance was on that.

just tighten the thing and use it for a strangle. Right now I'm imagining catching someone who is wearing a tie in a triangle, and as they bury their arm to defend, I'm reaching up and ever-so-gingerly tightening the knot.

What I use for Nogi and mma and haven't had any issues. I have a bad habit of griding my teeth and clenching so mine usually have the bottoms wear thin before anything else

It seems like people go to dentist customs when they have something about their mouth that makes normal mouth guards uncomfortable. I have a sisu that works great fwiw. I wear it even for drills because it's so comfortable and I might as well.

well i hope sisu gave y'all moneybux because i just ordered one in hot pink after hearing about them here. was gonna go with purple but that's a belt color so i didn't want to confuse anyone with my super technical spazzing. i wish they had patterns. that'd be neat. one day i'll have a nice mouth guard that has two gold teeth on it where my fancy gold teeth are. also got a pair of artibus shorts and they arrived today. they seem pretty light but i like the way they're built so i have high hopes. i generally hate fight shorts, especially the velcro crap. i'd really like a pair of shorts like the artibus but shorter but whatevs, these will work and we yammered about that already. these shorts were my purchase to force me to commit to nogi at least once a week even though it seems so brutal at the gym i attend. i'm also so glad i decided to just go on a nice walk last night instead of attending nogi. my body is not ready to do that twice a week plus the twice a week i'm doing yesgi. my thighs still hurt pretty bad.

I wear the sisu pink one, i've worn the same one for 6 or so years. I've only had to refit it three times and it was mostly because I had dental work that was unrelated to grappling. Enjoy drinking water and talking with a mouth guard unlike your gross team mates that have to take theirs out and hang them on their ear.

I'm watching third coast grappling right now. I'm happy that there are options for jiu jitsu competition but this is kind of a poo poo show. Nobody, including the commentators and the refs seem to fully understand the rules. Also, they will jump from commentary in mid sentence into loops of weed commercials.

Gonna assume it's just having an especially thicc neck from the muscles you develop by having dudes try to dunk your head like a basketball all day. Even though I had already done a decent bit of weightlifting before BJJ, it made my neck circumference go up 1", which was just enough to make all of my collared shirts no longer fit. Anyway, wider neck == wider tie knot for aesthetic balance purposes.

My greatest BJJ shame is having a normal sized neck and no calliflower ear. I guess w/o BJJ I would have a really thin neck so that's good. But how are people to know I have spent thousands of dollars and hours grinding my head and face against men's bodies?!

heading back to the late evening nogi class for a second time tonight. i am more anxious right now than i would be for a bad doctor's appointment. last time was absolutely brutal, nothing like the morning yesgi classes. i need to figure out a way to keep myself calm in the middle of getting destroyed round after round so i can try to learn something from it. tonight my goal is to pass someone's guard at least once and maybe to try to land x guard at least once if i have any gas left in the tank. hopefully by having a plan like that i'll be able to focus instead of losing my marbles the whole time. new sisu mouth piece just arrived. i was struck in the face a couple of times (by accident) in the last class so i'm glad it's here. my current chomp-to-form sometimes impedes my breathing and i've tapped to pressure because of it.

I've noticed I almost never see top level nogi guys get guard passed to side control since it's so ez to invert. I wouldnt feel too bad about having a hard time passing if you're more experience with yesgi
