They're still 2 different games with many differences in gameplay. I don't think AOE 2 is dying anytime soon. Plus, it absolutely passed the test of time. Just have fun, don't stress too much about a game. Maybe I'm one of the few who enjoys singleplayer but maybe check out the campaigns as well, dunno

I tried scout rush vs the standard AI and it was the first time I was able to beat it. The AI later spammed spearmen so I switched it up but drat did I mess with its economy Do I have to do some matches in the lobby before I can do ranked?

It will take a few games before your Elo is accurate enough to place you with comparable opponents, so try to not get discouraged if you feel like you're just getting your face kicked in for the first 5 - 10 games or so. For those desperate for some AoE4 info, someone made a spreadsheet detailing all unit stats/costs/some hidden bonuses, just not marking certain things like unique techs such as china's +30 hp for palace guard or HRE MAA techs. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1oIkBHSYGMyxx-yRL_cmhnx7nV_afCMSyjaXX0mL_4Kk/edit#gid=1309410362 Here are some thoughts: Scouts have amazing HP for their cost in the feudal age, a frontline of cheap scouts to screen for archers or add to horsemen mass early would be very effective, especially since scouts double as a safe food economy booster when you bring back hunt to the TC. Camel Riders are ONLY worth the price for fighting and chasing cavalry and will go down to almost everything else with only high HP and no armor. The upgrades for the spearmen line are very important to get for the extra HP and anti cav, especially dark to feudal for a 33% damage boost against cavalry and better general purpose stats. In feudal age a unupgraded spearman needs 9 hits to kill a horseman, a horseman needs 7 hits, 6 hits with +1, the spearman also attacks slower. A veteran spearman needs 7 hits to kill a horseman, a horseman needs 10 hits, 9 with +1 +1 attack on the spearman doesn't change the outcome at all, +1 armor on the spearman is a much better upgrade for them and will let them take 1 or 2 more hits from horsemen. Equal upgrades, archers in feudal do 2 damage to MAA, longbows do 3, you need just 40 equally upgraded longbowmen arrows to take down a MAA, 30 if you have +1 over them, a scout will take 19 longbow arrows and costs half the price of the man at arms making it a good early meatshield. Knights and Handcannoneers do so much damage that armor is rather meaningless against them and a +1 or +2 probably won't cause them to need a extra hit to kill whatever it is they are fighting, focus on attack upgrades against them, especially against knights. Light infantry really got it bad against any ranged presence on the battlefield, especially since they are likely to be the closest target to the archers, landsknecht are total glass cannons, emphasis on the glass. Zhuge is only going to be doing 1x3 damage to a MAA or knight with equal upgrades and at shorter ranges then a archer. Fire Lancers are slow for cavalry and less sturdy, very much a win the fight on the charge or don't win at all sort of unit in fights, good building damage though. Crossbows are half the cost of handcannoneers, 2 crossbowmen will do about the same anti-heavy damage as 1 handcannoneer but will be population inefficient and less good against light cavalry. For a moment then I beloved they was going to make an actual new aoe and for some reason I’d not seen any news about it. I’m a little sad that’s not the case. That aside the ranked matches sound good but it’s been that long since I played my rank would probably be nuked after login

Ignore your rank and accept you will never be pro. Just hope for a populous online mode so you actually get even matches that are fun to play. I don't get why people hate on ranked mode, especially in 1v1 games. Getting stomped is not fun, having even matches is.

I mean AoE2 has always had ranked. If you count sitting around in THE ZONE with your game room and waiting for someone to join near your elo and either starting or kicking them.

People seem really upset that pros and content creators got early access. Like do you really think a week of extra playing is what is going to make you lose out in the Genesis open bracket.... Even without the extra playtime these players would still crush the average open bracket player.

i like to play games the wrong way and just build up defenses while not even being attacked because at the end of the day i refuse to believe im not in control of the game as if it were legos optimally somebody would just assign my entire civilization to figure out the best way to deforest every map or dig holes through mountains that sounds fun as well

Looks like the NDA is lifted. Most media gave a pretty favorable rating, praising the campaign, high production value and such. Saw some streamers playing as well.

I've sunk so much time into AoE2 DE with a couple of friends over the last 2 years, I'm very excited for this game. Looks like it'll be a fun change of pace, plus if online is good it'll be nice playing with systems that people haven't spent 20 years optimising and mastering for everyone online.

This is just from stress test experience and watching videos, but I think Rus and Abbasids might end up being top tier, I think any cavalry civ will be high tier just due to how incredibly flimsy spearmen are and Abbasids have that whole having specialized anti cavalry camels going for them, while Rus have great early defenses, early scouting, early hunt control and great late game ranged horse archers and gunpowder unique units. I also think Longbow rushes will be what gatekeeps beginner players who don't know how to setup military production early, since 2 archery ranges on feudal can be game ending if it snipes villagers and starts a deathball. BUT in the mid-tier england will fall off as they start to deal with people who actually know how to deal with it, but then at the high-tier england will start popping off when some micro-god shows how to abuse the Abbey of Kings by sending back every 1 HP unit to heal back to full until it becomes a crazy economic and military advantage. Ever since T90 switched to facebook the streams have been pretty much dead compared to before, lost over 75% of his viewerbase. The money must have been really, really good.

Quite a few of the big streamers did move to FB streaming after twitch changed subs from $5 US everywhere to $5 in your currency for subs. Due to twitch taking a fixed cut of that, the big streamers lost a bunch of money and Facebook buyouts are just more money than twitch subs now.
