In my dads generation, there was heavy propaganda across the world to cultivate this image (Radio Free America for example) because it was a strategic interest to counter Soviet influence. There was actually a huge split in the third world over this - many of my dads friends went to Moscow for university while he decided to come to America. When asked why - he will regurgitate a lot of the talking points about freedom and all that. I will nonetheless give you that there is a high degree of patriotism for first gen immigrants. There’s a lot of reasons (one is mentioned above), but this has caused an enormous complacency amongst the native population that is now biting everyone in the rear end. It turns out that constantly resting on your laurels means that a lot of people have not only caught up, but has far surpassed this rather ancient talking point. Working life as a professional in the US is the butt of the joke even in places like Russia where they have federally mandated maternity leave. Americans believe their own psyops campaign which is now used to stall progress because why bother? We’re the greatest. Even though by nearly every metric that matters like health, education, happiness and per capita prosperity, were falling behind everywhere.

I actually don’t know if this is a conservative opinion or not but here goes anyway: all of the branches of government in the US are staffed by war criminals and war profiteers, including the guy that most on these forums voted into the White House last year. The US is in trouble because lefties don’t want to face this reality and think they can keep voting in the right people to get to safety and prosperity while shutting their eyes to the fact that they voted in baby killers who bomb weddings. The secret here is that the political divide is strictly for show because like  the people up on the Hill know that tribalism is their best bet to stay in power and never be held accountable.

I lived in the middle of a gang war for about 3 months and tbh it never once crossed my mind to get a gun. There was gunfire almost every night but it's not like I ever thought it was directed at me. I was much more worried about getting hit by a stray bullet than defending myself. No idea how I could have improved that situation by having a gun myself like "yeah let me just insert myself into this violence for no reason" lol. The people most likely to be walking around with guns for "self defense" usually live in places where there is basically no reason for it but they are just waiting to have that moment where they get to be a hero. Then the one in million hero scenario happens and they just get shot themselves.
