Exploration is ill-advised.
Makes a lot of sense that around the 19th/early 20th century the army was complaining that they couldn't get any recruits that passed the bare minimum of physical standards.

Need some advice on a bit of a moral dilemma. Friends have been a bit “well, gently caress ‘em” and I’m hoping the thread has a more balanced view. This reads as a bit of a humblebrag so please start any replies by saying how great I am, then probably come back to it at the end and say it again.

The Dilemma

We live in a pretty poor area. Every year my wife and I coordinate with a couple of local schools (generally different each year) to make sure that kids that would have literally gently caress all on Christmas Day have got a couple of presents to open, some decent grub, whatever. The only ‘rules’ we impose are in asking the school to help identify kids who need it, and for the school to work with the parents so any gifts come from them not the school or us randos.

Last year one of the schools wrote to say thanks and they were going to buy a book for every kid in the school. I went back and said books are great, and sharing equally is great, but if you remember our conversation that’s not quite what we were going for. The head seemed to understand but then shortly after Christmas I found out the school did use the donation to buy all the kids a book, as a gift from the school, and linked it back to good behaviour at some event they’d held earlier in the year.

Now the same school have reached out and asked if we’d like to make a Christmas donation again. Don’t wanna! Loads of other schools in the area who’d be happy for such a donation. But (1) when you donate money, it’s not yours any more, and you shouldn’t put limits on what the recipient does with it, and (2) the piss-poor kids I see walking past my window in the morning will still at least be getting something.

Any advice please?

A donation should never be an obligation and though it sounds heartless to say, you can’t make every poor child your responsibility. Donate what you can / what you feel is right to where you think it’ll do the most good, and that’s more than enough. There’s always going to be more needy causes than you can help.

Edit: If you wanted to, there’s probably other local charities that would be helping some of those kids as well? Or, if you think it would be well-received you could gently explain to the school why you don’t feel able to work with them this year, and hopefully they’ll be able to work with you again next year?

I'd personally give the school the donation again.

I can also see where the school is coming from because they might not want to tell a kid that they are poor and therefore deserving of charity, whilst the other kids in their class aren't. That's the sort of thing that can both knock a child's confidence and make them a target of bullying. It also opens the can of worms of a parent rejecting the gift because they don't want to be a "charity case".

jolly good chaps we sure showed the hun

you're trying to donate to kids in need so they can have a good Christmas. the school is merely an intermediary stealing misappropriating your donation to use as a tool for discipline enforcement. 1) doesn't apply because the donation hasn't actually gotten to the recipients

That head teacher sounds like a right bell-end tbh, taking a gift from the community on trust and making it into a reward for good behaviour, as if it's at their gift whether kids "deserve" to have a nice Christmas or not

I'd give the money somewhere else, it's not like you can give to everyone so the place where your donation will be administered by a confirmed bell-end is low priority imo. What I used to do when I had more disposable income was send cool toys to whatever Christmas present appeals I could google up, and just phone up food banks in poor areas saying "hey if I send you a hamper or 2 full of nice Christmas stuff can you please give them to families who might have a poo poo Christmas otherwise", which they were always very cool with. No idea who the stuff ended up with, but that's not up to me, all you can do at the end of the day is try to do something nice. Which you did.

Parents have to apply for their child to be registered as Pupil Premium, however children often don't know they are. As a school it wouldn't be that hard to have the conversation with parents of those students explaining the situation and seeing if they were interested. Some might say no because they don't want to be a charity case, but some would definitely accept.

You hate ridden fucks will regret your words when you eventually grow up.

Peace.
Fundraising guidelines generally hold that charities and trusts should be cautious of accepting conditional gifts that are costly to administer. If the condition turns out to be too onerous, one should return the gift rather than redirect it.

On the receiving side, I think it'd depend on the sums involved - the school would have to ask staff to administer a condition that is quite time-consuming and sensitive; one has to reach out to every parent involved - rather than just tossing funds into the bulk purchase form

If it's in the ballpark of £100 per child or less, it seems reasonable for the school to turn a conditional gift down or to gently suggest that the donor administer it another way. Schools are not the only trusts with lists of locally deprived households. To just return with a nuh-uh how about our Christmas whip-around? form letter seems a touch rude though.

I'm reminded that Orwell said that one of the few uses of constitutional monarchy was that it provides a relief valve for fascism by giving people a couple of days off to wave flags and sign in a fairly benign way.

If it can't do either of those then it's finally devoid of whatever little use it had left and people will start to see that.

On the other hand, it is very very very very funny when fash get outed and lose their job. Funny though it is to see fascists get owned, I'm extremely uncomfortable with the trend of supposed left wingers going round to their political opponents' employers and trying to get them fired. Socialists should never be siding with bosses against workers however awful they are, that misses the whole point of class politics. If you want to give them a kicking give them a kicking, don't go tattling to their manager. Completely counterproductive, handing more power to bosses, whatever reason you have for doing it.

Could you not get in touch with the parents directly? Put a sign up at the local community centre/food bank saying you're willing to help out financially at Christmas and set up a specific email address for them to get in contact with you. You'd have to deal with the (probably miserable) task of trying to screen out chancers yourself, but at least it cuts out the middle man.
