Very tight, either the progressives back it and the DNC attempts to primary them all, or they don't back it and also the DNC attempts to primary them all just with different messaging

Paid parental leave has been axed from the senate bill. Progressives are looking to tank the infrastructure vote in the house as Manchin and Sinema have not yet formally agreed to the reconciliation bill. Obama is making statements about how better things are wanted and were promised but just aren’t possible.

Progressives need to take the "my way or the highway" power than Manchin and Sinema have right now away and use it themselves. Edit: I know the difference is that progressives actually want to do things, and everyone else is fine with doing nothing. A Bad Poster fucked around with this message at 17:45 on Oct 28, 2021 |

I just read a book on Carter and getting vibes of when in the late 70s Dems had large majorities in both houses and Ted wanted national coverage but Carter wanted more limited catastrophic coverage and in the end nothing happened. Carter was/is ethical and did a lot for human rights but dammit he stunk at messaging and working with congress. Also learned when Carter welcomed Reagan to the White House post-election he was concerned when briefing him that he wasn't paying attention or taking notes, and when Carter mentioned South Korea cracking down on protestors being an issue Reagan wished America had more of an ability to shutter campuses during unrest, which Carter found unsettling.

I don’t mind my tax dollars going to health services but I have to draw the line at $130bn for a single person. Is this for all mall Santas? That is more agreeable.

Neither bill is really that bad, it's just particularly stupid that they're not better because of imaginary debt concerns and stupid self-negotiation. Everyone likes the base infrastructure bill, everyone likes what's in the reconciliation bill, it's just dumb that so much is missing because of CoalBaronGirlboss. But anyways, reconciliation HAS TEXT ON PAPER HOLY poo poo https://twitter.com/LauraLitvan/status/1453786036702744578 I ain't reading 2500 pages though.

Aren't bills typically triple spaced, in a larger font, and full of blank pages? I feel like 2500 pages is misleading.

Like 75% of the text of a bill is boilerplate filler bullshit that is only there to make bills sound uber complicated to make congress look like experts instead of assholes (they manage to look like inept assholes in spite of this though)

Yeah, lots of "blah blah refers to the blah blah act of 19AGGGGGHHHHH" if the forestry section up front is anything to go by.

Every section follows almost the exact same format. Once you learn how to read bills you‘ll see that a 1500 page bill is probably 100 pages of actual information. It’s frustrating to navigate and unfair to citizens imho.

Part of the problem is that all that text has to be legally precise for regulatory agencies to implement and courts to deal with down the line. If there was a non legally binding, non technical summary of the bill's changes prepared by an organization something like the CBO that would be a huge improvement.

I always thought that legislative bill formats basically have to follow the same standards as like bills posted in the late 1700s because every "may" "shall" and "must" gets millions of dollars of litigation over it. The frustration and dumb poo poo of said language is probably just a happy accident that isn't in Congress's interest to fix. Edit: efb

I’m suddenly getting a pile of fundraising emails about how close Mcauliffe and the actual, literal ghoul are polling. TL;DR: It's a clusterfuck. It's effectively a race within the margin of error and, being a VA resident, I'm just assuming Youngkin is going to win. Even up here in Northern VA, I'm seeing more Youngkin signs than McAuliffe ones. McAuliffe hosed almost every aspect of his campaign up. It's like he picked up Hillary's 2016 playbook and thought "I can't lose!" Both candidates have been publicly and enthusiastically fellating whatever cops will endorse them, Terry seems to be squigged out by trans people, and nearly every McAuliffe "vote for me" ad until recently didn't feature him actually speaking to the voters. Youngkin clearly wants to rob the state blind but he's winning the "he seems like such a nice man" race, whereas McAuliffe is running again because like Richard Gere in Officer and a Gentleman, he's got nowhere else to go. Remember that staff will exaggerate in order to drive voters. Youngkin did just get a very loud and proud Trump endorsement flyer out so that might remind "independents" what the candidate is about. I was just happy to find out I could do permanent mail-in voting.
