I mean, I wouldn't really call it a 'minefield,' but a lot of stuff that's explicit about it is going to mostly focus on the romance element, because it's codified into its own genre. You get action stuff, fantasy stuff, sports stuff, etc, but they all usually still pivot around the romance between the leads.

For instance Yuri on Ice is a figure skating anime with a gay romance, but the gay romance is the driving force of most of the plot and tension. The figure skating matters, too, but the romantic tension between the leads isn't exactly a background element, and most of the development and payoff happens with it.

It's pretty rare to find a completely standard plot only the lead is gay but that doesn't really come up outside of a couple brief mentions. You get stuff with side characters like that, Nabari no Ou is a shonen manga that delves into gender and sexuality with a lot of the side cast while still being a shonen manga at its core, but that's still pretty different from, say, 'One Piece only at the end Luffy kisses a dude and goes god i love men,' if you catch my drift.

So it depends what exactly you're looking for when you say 'isn't completely focused?' Because if you mean there's other plot stuff going on, there's stuff like that, like I mentioned Yuri on Ice already, but if you mean its a completely negligible element, that's a lot rarer.

So as someone completely ignorant of how to find gay manga or anime, it seems like a weird minefield. Are there any series where the main characters just happen to be gay, where the story isn't completely focused on them loving or their romance?

Most of my attempts just come up with Yaoi stuff, which is not what I'm looking for at all.

weird way to ask this question but last few pages actually has some some stuff, like Liar Satsuki and Ah... and Mm...

but like... are you asking for stories where characters are lgbt and its incidental or stories that is focus on gay stuff but not particularly romance... like Shimanami Tasogare has romance in it but i wouldn't say its the focus, the focus is more just broadly aim at LGBT stuff so does that disqualify it because they don't "just happen to be gay"?

anyway its problematic but yuureitou is another one

I feel like "happens to be gay" is a lot rarer in manga than it is in western pop stuff. I think American media in general is really big on the idea of "normalizing through representation" (more cynically, this comes up as including token gay characters). Most of the queer manga I've come across are explicitly about the character's gender or sexuality, even if it's not about a romance necessarily. Like Our Dreams at Dusk feels like it's mostly about sexuality and gender identity but isn't quite what I'd call a romance manga, it's mostly about the psychological turmoil of having to accept yourself.

When stories happen to have gay characters in them, I think a lot of times they're written so that it's mostly subtext. Like Hidamari Sketch, where Sae and Hiiro are absolutely a lesbian power couple, but it's never made explicit.

Oh, Qualia of Purple fits the bill, but it's about lesbians rather than gay dudes if that's what you're looking for in particular.

i'm not really sure why 'characters loving/romance' qualifies as a weird minefield

Aurora
Jan 7, 2008

also yeah anything that doesn't focus on romance will in 95% of cases never confirm canonically that two characters are gay, you're stuck with 'these characters are obviously in love, but never say "i'm gay" or "i'm dating x"'

I was just looking for action or other stories where the characters are explicitly gay and have relationships but the focus of the story is not entirely on their romance or straight porn

I probably put it weirdly just due to the stuff I found when I looked.

Baka-updates has a tag called LGBT Character In Non-Yaoi/Yuri Manga - which can be used in to do advanced searches if you want to filter it further, for example if you want to filter out the romance for some strange reason.

Vote shit sandwich or the shit sandwich gets it!
Help me out here folks, I'm trying to find a manga I read a couple years ago.

It was about a "man" (probably a trans woman, but the manga doesn't make it clear) who's married (I think it was an arranged marriage, but I'm not 100% sure) but also has an apartment besides their family home where they keep a stash of women's clothing and use those to dress up. They end up starting a relationship with an older man (the older man is kind, it's not abusive) and breaking up with their wife, and start dressing full time and living with the older man.

Near the end of the manga they arrange to meet up with their ex-wife, and go to the appointment en femme: the wife takes one look at them and starts laughing while saying "This makes so much sense!"

The manga was short, probably one volume, a handful of chapters or so. Not too long.

I think the author was Fumiko Fumi (of Bokura no Hentai fame) or Takako Shimura (of... several things fame), but for the life of me I cannot find this manga any longer. Does anyone remember this one?

Hero and Former General is a straight-up tokusatsu action manga that starts from the premise of one of the extra-dimensional invaders switching teams because she's so gay for the hero.

Shimotsuki Kairi's Madness is a fantasy story with sword fights and an evil group of killers. Kairi started out in Shounen adventure manga so took that onboard with the story whose main characters have relationship issues. Don't remember it very well though it came out in the early 2000s.

Tokyo Babylon had a lot of paranormal demon fighting.

Since I posted about it last time there's been like 15 new chapters of Liar Satsuki. I guess the scanlation was very very behind.

Things are getting complicated. What the gently caress, Komachi? What is your deal

To the person asking for non-romance LGBT stories, this certainly is one. Liar Satsuki Can See Death is a crime-solving thriller, that just happens to involve a basically all-lesbian cast.

Ja, it was my favourite thing when reading it for the first time, but the low page numbers and slow updating mean I kept forgetting about it. I use Tachiyomi to read comics and manga on my phone and I've set it to scan for updates once a day, so every now and then I get a nice surprise.

Also since I've been feeling really good lately after a couple of nightmare months, I've had a lot more energy to be creative, so I've tried translating the English scans into Esperanto, as my conversations in it tend to be a lot more wholesome, so it's been a challenge matching the dialogue, but a fun one.
