While I do think the media is overall far too deferential towards Biden and towards power in general, it's pretty obvious that the NASCAR reporter tried "oh yeah they're saying let's go Brandon" because sports reporters are pathologically averse to "politics" in their coverage.

Also because it was a network broadcast and networks can get in trouble for broadcasting "gently caress" if it is not "broadcast in a fleeting manner or said involuntarily in shock."

I never forget a face, but in your case I'll be glad to make an exception.
I remember and prefer the days of limited meme reach where they were seemingly confined to somewhat niche corners of the web and shared with contacts over personal email versus today's nearly inescapable social media web which bled over into an increased proliferation of physical world yard sign displays, decal emblazoned vehicles and political meme catchphrases embedded in verbal public communications. Or at least I can imagine a time when it didn't seem like I inhabited a full fledged meme world. Maybe it was a different set of memes I was steeped in to the point of non-awareness of them back then.

I saw a Let’s Go Brandon sticker on a boomer driven Tahoe in my neighborhood. I think it’s got some legs with the decrepit, terminally online Facebook meme sharers. Still dumb as poo poo though, but each encounter in the wild is emblematic of the ring of inflammation around the rotting wound of online nazi poo poo.

It’s okay to loathe Joe Biden, he deserves it. I think fighting over the exact meaning of the phrase is missing the point.

Dogwhistles aside, “Conservative” used to mean George Will. Any racist underbelly was firmly hidden behind “fiscal” concerns. But after Trump’s 2016 campaign, the mask is off and “Conservative” now means that if you aren’t white, cis, and Christian, then you aren't a real American. “Conservatives” now physically threaten people on the streets all over this country. Signaling that you’re “Conservative” is no longer benign, especially when you’re doing it in a secret-but-not-secret way that suggests “We’re out here, we’re everywhere, and we loathe you. Be silent, be invisible, like you were back when America was Great.”

I think what annoys me about it is that it sounds innocuous and is very crowd-chant-friendly (by nature) so we keep hearing anecdotes of big crowds striking it up. Whether it means the entire crowd even knows what it means or not, it's really discouraging to see. (And probably worse if they don't realize what they're doing)

Maybe the Dems and liberals should focus on correcting their failures to deliver anything they promised during the 2020 campaign instead of a silly chant that is meant to hide an expletive about the president?

If this chant is supposed to be some code for Nazis to identify each other than maybe things like voting rights should be treated with importance instead of some fundraising propaganda.

This is the same argument we had about the racist okay sign.

Like to the extent that it's just an ingroup code word it's not worrisome on its own because the people already exist and the meme isn't what is changing their mind. But it absolutely is a dogwhistle. And it's not just about Joe Biden sucking.

It's internet humor for conservatives, and they use it to identify each other and form in groups. I don't know whether that "matters" or not but it's definately real.

I might be wrong, but from my own observation it seems like the frog emojis have sort of transcended and are now used by people of all political persuasions, and have approached the 'ok hand sign' point of how crazy you seem to most people if you try to talk about the bad contexts in which they were used.

"This is a dog whistle"
Yeah seems right.

"People who use it are right-wingers"
Uh huh probably a fair assumption.

Then,

"People who use it are, more specifically, Nazis"
Okay that's more of a jump and is getting into hyperbole that is unnecessary at best.

"All right-wingers are nazis"
This, to me, is unhelpful. It's just... Not what the word means. Hell some of them might be worse than the actual Nazis, somehow. I wouldn't put it part these psychos.

The thing about those is that they have some utility and meaning on their own outside of being alt-right memes. "Let's go Brandon" has absolutely no other meaning (unless there's actually someone named Brandon you're cheering on). I don't think transcendence is possible here.

Words like nazi, fascist, socialist, liberal, etc. have lost all nuance in online discourse and just mean "someone with different political views than me." They're used more in a way to signal membership to a political tribe than any sort of specific political philosophy.

I think it's fine to figuratively shove the microphone in the face of people that you hear say it, and ask why they think it's okay to say that in that context? It's not cute or funny and you're a 50-year old man, so if you want to say gently caress Joe Biden, say it.

If society generally doesn't establish boundaries, it's not like anyone else will. Make them pay an uncomfortable social price for acting like a child.

Treating it as a big taboo is part of what fuels memes like this. It was acceptable to chant gently caress Trump and while the right got mad about it they never really acted like it didn't happen and it never really became a big thing. The news caster unfortunately pretending it was a different phrase gave it that spice to make people like Ted Cruz feel punk rock when they say it.

I think I mostly agree with this take. If someone says "Let's go Brandon" they've identified themselves as a right winger and someone I want nothing to do with. Doesn't necessarily mean I'm afraid that particular person will march me to a gas chamber but like, I'm still pretty much automatically not going to like anyone who outs themselves as a right winger.

I think passengers gasping is an appropriate response. Not because "omg he said the equivalent of a slur!" but simply for the unprofessionalism of bringing a political meme where it doesn't belong. If I was on a plane in 1996 and the pilot said "Please vote for Bob Dole" I'd probably make some sort of surprised exclamation.

Eww no. Sorkin would be like making a speech about morals after someone named Brandon committed suicide after hearing the chant, changing everyone's mind in the end.

Trolling a troll like let's go Brandon is a perfectly fine response as long as it's funny. It's not going to actually fix the problem.

That just reminds me of how they changed the ending of Needful things. Where instead of getting into a weird magic duel with a daemon. The sheriff talks the town down in a giant sorkin moment and leads to the hosed up select man suicide bombing max von sydow. In the book, like half the town is dead or blow up and the daemon kinda gets chased off. How come most king movies suck? Like misery and shining are good. And it chapter 1
