Goddamn the Hard AI is a complete pest when it comes to harassment. Hit squads of like 4 knights ganking villagers too far beyond fortifications. What's the solution, outpost sprawl?

Also I swear to god you used to be able to rally units to other units, but it's not working here. Did I imagine that in the technical test beta?

You want to make sure your villagers can hide in a building if they get raided so yeah build outposts, TCs and keeps where your villagers are working.

You can put a rally point on sheep and deer which will move around with them but I haven't tried with a military unit.

So, is this game good? I'm starved for an RTS game. Didn't even like AOE back in the day (was more of a C&C person) but that was also 15-20 years ago so I'll take another shot at it.

Yeah it's good. If you've never gotten into AOE before than it should feel pretty fresh. It occurs to me that there's an entire generation of zoomer teenagers who have never played RTS games before and for whom AOE4 would be pretty mind blowing.

The definitive editions for AOE2 and AOE3 are really good as well and cheaper than AOE4 unless you have an Xbox live sub.

I disliked AOE2 and actually I love this game, It's the best RTS I've played in ages and easy to get into.

People who don't like AOE2 should try out AOE3, Age of Mythology and Age of Empires Online (via the Project Celeste fan project). They are each very different games.

I rather liked age of mythology and got pretty high in ranked until every other game was against maphacks or abusing one of the many exploits left unpatched like cancelling age-up at 99.9% and getting a full refund + age up.
These days I would 100% say total warhammer eclipses age of mythology though if you want to have some minotaurs and mummys bash into each other or send some regular humans flying with a giant comet.

I started aoe2 maybe a month before this and aoe4 is extremely my poo poo. I have hundreds of hours into wc3 and dabbled in sc/sc2. Its awesome playing it

The more I play the more I love the game.

I was a little underwhelmed at first, but it really does grow on you and just... work.

I basically exclusively play as Abbassid now.

Their civ is basically how I love to play. I love traders and making siege equipment in the field, and camels are my favorite mounted unit.

I can't work out if camel archers are actually good. They seem quite effective against everything in the feudal age, but they're so expensive

They're a good one or two off vs knight factions, but they're not especially good vs actual archers, just price wise

Ra Ra Rasputin

They do high damage and melt spearmen, but they are more Archer then Cavalry, so horsemen will outrun and outdamage them if they get caught out despite the damage debuff.

The real key to them is going military wing and giving your infantry swarm +1/1 which can be critical for winning fights early before the real high damage stuff comes out, then using your infantry mass to build rams.

I was watching some Winterstarcraft and it looks like knights' charge only has a 10 or so second cooldown, and he was also trying out spearmen bracing using hold-ground, which is directional and gives them unit collision, so for all the talk of the loss of micro because of the archer changes I think there's definitely still potential there.

Would anything make you take military wing before the Econ one? That +10% tech on the Econ one just feels so essential

They are good for harassment. You can outmaneuver foot units with them as you kill workers. Don't expect to run over cheaper basic archers with them though, they aren't meant to be more cost effective in a straight up fight.

I am pleasantly surprised with the single player experience, they obviously spent a lot of time on it and I think it pays off.

I'm happy with the number of civs given their uniqueness. Mongols are my favorite, since you don't have any walls you need to stay on the offensive forcing your opponent to defend and overwhelm their concentration by poking at any undefended spots. If they do manage to get an offense going, you can just run away because your buildings can move faster than horses if you get the upgrade.

For all civs you should keep an eye on what your opponents are doing, with everything moving kinda slow the worst possible thing is to get caught off guard by an attack and building/moving the right counters in time.

Having played through a good majority of the Norman / French campaigns, this is pretty accurate. I think there's only one mission in both these campaigns that has been kinda challenging so far (playing on normal). The French mission that follows the peasants in revolt portion took me like, 3 tries to get right- and even then that was just teaching me the power of Arbalatiers.

I do kind of enjoy the overall context the campaigns provide around history, with the english campaign starting with William's invasion of Normandy and going around their dynasty. I hope they go hog wild with adding more campaigns similar to how AoE2: DE is.

Struggling to get wins as chinese, any tips? In team games I can turtle and macro, hitting all the dynasties and unleashing a killing gunpowder push at T4, but their T1 and T2 feels so toothless for solo. Fire lancers are good harassers but they seem to come so late to meaningfully pressure your opponent...

I've seen a bunch of people say essentially this. They have a killer late death ball army with their siege and gunpowder but don't have anything early to help them get there, and the dynasty system is very marginal. A second full price landmark in castle and/or imperial is extremely expensive for the benefit they provide.

Mata
Dec 23, 2003
Yeah, I do like the civ design and how the game flows if you go song > yuan > ming, but the value just isn't there. Even the Song dynasty looks good on paper with the 35% villager training speed but at that price you could just get a second town hall and the CKN seems a bit underwhelming. Granted the village saves you a lot of wood on housing... We'll see but they might need some tweaks for solo.

Are there any performance differences between the stress test and release version? My computer strangely struggled with the stress test - it felt like playing underwater, with an odd latency to everything even in solo - but I don't know if that was just an early version being less optimized. I like almost everything I'm hearing about the gameplay but it sure ain't worth it if the technical experience is as miserable as the stress test.

My performance is the same from the stress test to now, i.e. pretty smooth, I don't now if they did any optimization between then and now, but I somehow doubt it.

You can always try the game on steam and refund it if you continue to have issues with the release version.

Was playing a game as French vs Mongols on Hills map.
Got sieged in in castle age at the front gate.
I moved my knights outside via the backdoor and positioned them for a flank attack.
Lured his army into my siege, made him charge up the hill to commit.
Then flanked with my knights to make him waver and take full dmg from my mangonels.

I love this game to bits already and I can't wait to see what amazing games we wil get to see fromt he pros.

China is going to always be F tier in my eyes so long as the Dynasty button sits in the middle of your screen.

They also suffer from the fact that every single one of their landmarks is extremely underwhelming and paying full price for a second one is a lot to ask for, even if they unlock extra stuff.

Ra Ra Rasputin
Apr 2, 2011
I feel like maybe water balance was a last minute rush job or someone made a mistake giving the French a regular age 3 ship in age 2 that just completely forfeits water to them.

Did some tests on https://turnspender.itch.io/aoe4-combat-simulator with a Hulk vs 5 Galleys, here's the results.

Take note of the resource investment of the two sides and blacksmith upgrades don't effect the outcome much since the Hulk does 100 damage a hit and has 6 ranged armor.

And one more test, with larger numbers and +1 attack on the gallleys.
