This might just be the year
I think its wild that they needed to put the sacrifice clause into the 4 mana enchantment that spits out 1/1s, as if the huge danger is that someone will get to dome the opponent for 7 on more than one occasion with exactly 13 permanents

I'm too awake for this to be a nightmare

Thalia, Ascendent Packleader, Abrade, Manaform Hellkite, and Voice of the Blessed are the only cards I think are guaranteed to see standard play.

Path of Peril, Ulvenwald Oddity, Sorin, Cemetary Prowler, Inspired Idea, Ollenbock Escort, Syncopate, Packsong Pup, and Lantern Flair are maybes.

I would love to live in a world where Overcharged Alagam is playable in some kind of dimir sacrifice shell, but the black sac decks have not been great post-rotation.

I sold all my old magic cards and was thinking of spending a bit of that money picking up a couple of decks just to play around with my friend who played back in the day. I admit to being incredibly dumb but I can't really figure out where to start now. I started playing magic when we picked up two random 60 card decks, but now you can buy prebuilt or something called commander? I've read a few getting started guides or what's on the MTG website but it's not really clear.

If you've got yourself and 3+ other friends I'd definitely recommend some Commander Preconstructed decks and learning commander for 4 player games. If it's just a couple of you, I'd recommend something called the Pioneer Challenger Decks, they're made for 1v1. Or just buying a booster box and playing limited.

there are a lot of formats these days (both official and unofficial) because there's a LOT of cards out there and having ways to cut down the size of card availability leads to variety in gameplay.

commander, specifically, is a very popular format meant to be played in long, 4 player sessions where everyone has a legendary creature as commander they can play repeatedly (with escalating cost) and the rest of the deck is singleton (restricted to the colors of said commander). it's pretty fun and you sure can just play it 1v1 if you want

really it depends on if you're planning on playing with anyone other than your friend b/c if you just want to play them with a bunch of random cards regardless of their individual legality you can just do that with whatever you pick up (but imo you probably should've figured out what cards you'd want to keep out of your old collection in that case)

So there are different formats but Commander is kind of its own separate thing where its 100-cards and they all have to be unique except for basic lands. I don't play much of that but people say its fun but also you'd probably want more than 2 people playing.

Generally if you want to play with your friend with preconstructed decks kinda thing you'd play some format like Modern, Pioneer, or Standard which is the same type of MTG you're probably familiar with. The restrictions in those formats is generally what sets you can use. Since you're playing casually that kinda stuff doesn't matter too much. If you're interested in the formats I think there are some descriptions in the OP.

There are a lot of options if you're just playing casual... if you want a preconstructed deck that's not commander they have challenger decks.. an example is here: https://www.amazon.com/stores/page/B6C30FCB-3335-4C21-9A79-03103D50279D I'm not sure of their prices but I think mostly Amazon is a little bit more expensive but probably the easiest way to buy these. They also recently released Pioneer Decks that have slightly better cards but are more expensive: https://www.amazon.com/stores/page/99005063-9242-4BE7-896B-DB0AD3A377C5?ingress=0&visitId=492db7b5-63a1-45bc-a7bf-f761664fcc28

There actually is one more sort of "format" called Jumpstart that lets you combine 2 20-card packs that are filled with lands/creatures/spells to let you play a 40-card game just by shuffling two packs together. If you don't want to buy an entire box, they sell a 4-pack that you can buy to play against another opponent. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B084P3L4R7/

Common misconception, its got the word Seven in its name, but it's actually a 5 drop.

And it's a much better card that gives you a land/land creature.

I'm saying that if you play it on 5 then on turn 6 it fills your hand with lands that turn into real cards on 7

Doubt it will be a build around but it'll certainly be pretty good if your games make it that far since it pumps tokens too. If only it was 6 CMC!

It doesn't
The bounce land ability can't go on the stack until you receive priority, and you can't receive priority until the ability resolves. So while you're "repeating this process" the lands will be on the table waiting patiently for the current ability to finish resolving before they can go bouncing.

Doom Blade doesn't kill planeswalkers, about 1/5 of creatures and hasn't been printed into a standard set since 2014. I'm not saying it's bad for the limited format or anything, but it's of a level that we've only seen at rare for a while, and it probably going to sour the mood of a few people who draft planeswalkers.

Thanks for the advice everyone. It's just two of us so I'll give commander a pass for now. Deck building is fun, so maybe Jumpstart is kind of the way to go, but the challenger decks do appeal as well. Dear god there are so many different sets and booster boxes now. I sold all the cards worth anything, we've still got a bunch of old cheap commons from unlimited/revised through to 4th edition, and treated myself by selling my old trophy card for store credit so I'm a little limited by what the store sells. pretty much everything mentioned is available though.

It feels kind of quirky from a rules text perspective that this is a "choose one or both". Feels like it could have worked more smoothly as "if you control a vampire, target vampire you control deals damage equal to its power to up to one target creature"

Did you sell it recently...??? Unlimited uncommons/commons have some value.. so you may want to check again. If you collected anything in "4 Horsement" sets (Arabian Nights, Antiquities, Legends, The Dark) they may also have value.

I don't think that works because the "if you control a vampire" part would check on resolution, but targets need to be decided before then. Could have worked as "Up to one target vampire you control deals damage equal to its power to another target creature". Not particularly better or worse than the choose one/both wording imo.

This would mean you target the other creature regardless. And if you had no vampires, the whole spell would be countered by killing the target not-vampire.
