I watched pretty much all of Lost Lands twitch stream, an awesome way to spend the weekend.

One thing that really struck me and has made me feel way less old than these streams tend to was the sense I got that dubstep//heavy bass music really… I dunno but to me it sounds [i]roughly[/] the same as it did 10 years ago. I remember the way the sound and the scene evolved from 2008-2012-2016 and trying to explain to someone that “No, really Benga is technically the same kind of music as Rusko!” and having uncool old man anxiety that if I ever got to go back to shows I’d be a stranger in a strange land…

But that doesn’t seem to be the case. Yeah, most of the headliners seem to have been teething while I was in college rail riding at Camp Bisco, but the music is still doing the same stuff. There’s still pretty melodic stuff, there’s still heavy “dinosaurs fighting robots” type stuff, and the really creative newer voices like Svdden Death and Subtronics, are getting very weird and sPoOpY and employing really unique sounds but it was just kind of a relief to listen to 30 hours of the newest dubstep et al and find that it’s still recognizable as the kind of music I love to dance to.

Anyone else have similar experiences? Music is such a huge part of my life, I haven’t been to an EDM show since 2018 but I was always anxious about returning to the scene as ancient 33 year old but I don’t feel that way anymore.

It was also really fun to listen to Excisions “classic” set where he just fired out all his old bangers from 10 years ago. So fun to hear how hard those tracks still hit today. Sometimes you go back to the bangers of yesteryear and now you think they sound like lullabies.

I rediscovered https://www.di.fm this evening after years away from it. For those that don't know, it's a collection of internet radio stations focused exclusively on electronic music. In addition to their drum and bass and trance stations which I already knew were great, they've got future bass and trap stations that are also pretty rad. I've been listening to the future bass station for the past half hour or so. They have EDM hits and EDM festival stations too, though I haven't checked those out yet. Pretty much any subgenre of electronic music you can name they have a radio station for.

They have free (ad supported) and premium tiers and I've been listening to various stations on the free tier for the past hour and a half or so and have yet to hear a single ad, so that's pretty awesome.

Yes.

I searched Pendulum in the thread, and all I saw was a few posts saying the remix album was weak and they wished Pendulum would release new material.

Back in June they released a new EP. It's 100% excellent, and has me thirsty for a whole album.

It was discussed briefly in the drum & bass thread. Personally I really like Driver and would dig a whole album like that, although they've put out albums like that in the past so it wouldn't exactly be new territory for them.

The rest of the tracks on it didn't grab me :(

I've spent most of my life listening to rock music (especially on the punk spectrum), never really giving EDM the time of day (to be fair, much of it over here in Europe was terrible up until at least the 2000's) except maybe early Pendulum and a few random drum 'n' bass songs because they have some of that same energy. Last year, however, I randomly discovered Kontravoid on YouTube and was immediately hooked:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IuhP9KxfAWo

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l7WsWrVdLds

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e9V8l19u_kw

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-Jec9UkIgw

The slower songs have a vaguely goth feel, with that distorted synth and menacing bassline, without feeling plodding. The faster ones share some of that frantic punk/d'n'b energy. I love it.

Is this...synthwave? Is that actually a stylistically coherent subgenre? Regardless, what else sounds like this? Recommendations would be appreciated, thanks.

Sounds like EBM (electronic body music)/electro industrial to me. Check out KMFDM, Skinny Puppy, Wumpscut, VNV Nation and even early Nine Inch Nails (Pretty Hate Machine era).

Similar vibe for sure, but I think Kontravoid's sound is still subtly different...something about the synths, it sounds menacing but still has a nice flow.

I didn't seriously get into EDM until 2013 so I missed out on seeing them live but I've always wanted to. They're playing here in DC at our NBA/NHL arena next August, so that's an instabuy for me.

The new single has production that is identifiable as SHM but it mainly just feels like a Weeknd song.

e: Okay, I just listened to The Cure To Loneliness all the way through again for probably the first time since it came out, and I think my opinion of it is the same as it was back then. There are a few songs on it I like (like Lose My Mind, Telepathy and This Song Reminds Me Of You), but overall it doesn't have the same magic that his previous singles/EPs have. Still, I'm excited to see Jai live finally. I've only been trying for like 4 years lol

e2: Saw on Twitter that someone posted video of Skrillex's first NYC set in a few years. It's likely phone footage so it's shaky as hell and the audio isn't great but it accurately depicts the intensity of being in the crowd at a Skrillex show!

So can you help me appreciate him and the whole subgenre of Bass Music. I don't get it, it might be that I grew up on Nu Disco and Pop music instead of metal ,but I can't help but think of this every time I listen to it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CeLtXM1Vt44

A lot of big bass dubstep carries a lot of trap and dancehall influence with it, so you get big party tunes.

Svdden Death//Voyd is a good example, maybe the best big example, of someone trying to get that truly gross and inorganic heavy bass/dubstep sound but without all the “good vibes” or clubby trap sounds that are the hallmarks of the genre.

Dubstep has basically always been the “Metal” of EDM, and this is the sun-genre of dubstep specifically for the Tru Doom Murderheads, the goth stoner kids who wanna get hosed up and dance but still want to be immersed in a dark and alien sound instead of a comforting and “fun” track.

Edit: oh in terms of dubstep and heavy bass music in general it’s, uh, a bunch of really cool noises that are fun to get hosed up and dance to?

I feel the same way. I was writing up a response when Bust Rodd posted ITT about dubstep a few weeks back, but got distracted and never finished it. The dubstep heyday was a big part of how I got back into electronic music in my early 20s. There was a lot of variety, and a lot of drum & bass producers trying their hand at it to various effect. The most popular stuff that had staying power in my mind were the few big names, KTN, Excision, Feed Me, Knife Party, etc., but it's few and far between even these days that they have releases that excite me like they used to. And I've all but abandoned the heavier side of the genre (outside those few artists' releases) since almost everything I've heard in the past couple of years has been the same 1/8 note chainsaw wobble over uninspired drums.

That kind of dubstep is certainly 'the metal of electronic music' in that it's a mostly-male audience whose idea of 'good time' and 'rage out' are synonymous; the kind of dudes who crack their necks headbanging at the barriers, or mosh awkwardly and think it makes them tough. To each his own, but that hyper-aggression hasn't done it for me in years. My latest mix had some dubstep that had heavy elements but tear-out tune after tear-out tune is so hard to mix, and doesn't satisfy anymore.

Yeah I went to a big Canadian dubstep festival back in 2018 and while it was the most fun I’ve ever had at a concert by Sunday I was just as sick of it as anyone else, and it really felt like 20 people who were just playing each other’s tracks.

My favorite dubstep artists were Benga, Burial, Distance and Rusko back when dubstep meant something extremely different than what it became. I just grew up with the genre, and I remember going from dubstep shows not being able to put 50 bodies in a dive bar to being the biggest and most popular party music.

I think if I had to pinpoint what attracts me to the genre, it’s probably just that it’s heavy and dark and intense like metal, but has a lot of influence from black music, not just rap and hip hop but also lots of blues and jazz too! Borgore’s earlier stuff feels classically composed at times, he’s an incredibly talented, even though he just does club trap now. It’s great music for smoking weed, working out, trying to psych yourself out of a bad mood, and especially for playing cool video games. I love trashy house music and breakbeats and DnB and all kinds of music but dubstep is the music that I put on when I have to get up at 6 AM to go drive 20 miles for work before the sun comes up, it gets me through the worst parts of the day :unsmith:
