They're only just now, at age 50+, stumbling across some "computer thing" that they think only they are smart enough to have discovered, where all the secrets are there out in the open, and victory is theirs for the taking. Vib Rib posted:There's literally no loving logic or even consistency applied to these conspiracies at all. That's what always gets me. None of that matters. None of it. At all. Plenty of very smart people have written a lot of words intricately dissecting these kinds of people and movements. I could post that quote about how "fascists get to play with language", which I can't quite locate right now, or talk about the motivations behind joining End of Days cults. But it just doesn't matter. These people are bored, existentially bored. They're bored assholes, racists, fascists, or just really loving weird and bored. Their lives are mostly comfortable economically and socially, even with the bigotry they throw around, but they simply want the world to be more interesting than it is. The reason none of the individual parts make sense when you try to examine and connect them is because these people aren't thinking in terms of logic, they're not even thinking in terms of conspiracy, they're thinking in terms of Screen Plays. They have a plot and a narrative, and once whatever macguffin they've decided on reaches the third act they "win". That's why January 6th makes no sense as an actual "attack". Even the people who did have plans to handcuff or kidnap or kill congress people didn't have any idea of what to do once they actually reached their goal. That's because in their mind it played out like this: We storm the Capitol, we capture the bad guys, the triumphant music plays, and the credits roll telling the audience that we saved the day. Because these people have spent their entire lives watching too many movies and being told by right wing propaganda to be ready to fight and kill "the bad people" to preserve "their country". Jean-Paul Satre: "Never believe that anti-Semites are completely unaware of the absurdity of their replies. They know that their remarks are frivolous, open to challenge. But they are amusing themselves, for it is their adversary who is obliged to use words responsibly, since he believes in words. The anti-Semites have the right to play. They even like to play with discourse for, by giving ridiculous reasons, they discredit the seriousness of their interlocutors. They delight in acting in bad faith, since they seek not to persuade by sound argument but to intimidate and disconcert. If you press them too closely, they will abruptly fall silent, loftily indicating by some phrase that the time for argument is past" From Anti-Semite and Jew, from 1944, written just after the liberation of Paris

Vib Rib posted:There's literally no loving logic or even consistency applied to these conspiracies at all. That's what always gets me. Conspiracy theories always seem to involve a tension between worldview/ideology and reality. These people don't believe they can be wrong, even when reality dictates they very clearly are. They invent or seek out an alternative reality that explains why their worldview is actually correct, and that necessarily becomes more bizarre and complex as their worldview continues to be challenged by actual reality. I've had a theory that the explosion of belief in Q and related conspiracies stems from people strongly believing Trump was the smart, competent businessman he claimed to be but the reality of his presidency was clearly nothing but buffoonish incompetence. They invested a lot in him emotionally, spiritually, psychically, whatever. It was easier for a lot of supporters to construct a vast, baroque conspiracy where Trump was actually a secret genius fighting a shadowy global cabal of demon-possessed child murderers rather than accept the reality that they were tricked by a grifter and a conman in way over his head. And then it spirals out from there due to sunk costs and the continual need to keep coming up with counter narratives to unpleasant reality. It all falls apart under any critical examination or requests for evidence and they will just shout "do your own research!" and run back to their favorite Q-pilled youtuber because none of it is ever intended to do anything other than prop up the ideology of the believer. I think maybe the most illustrative example of this kind of thinking is the Mandela Effect conspiracy theories where people will literally say that their memories and understanding of the world cannot be wrong and that reality itself is false. At least, this is the way I understand the psychology and I feel like it explains a good bit of why these ideas are becoming so prevalent. Re: the Sarte quote - I don't think that represents the mindset of most Q believers. I think they are mostly sincere and self-deluded. That quote is more appropriate to trolls like Tucker Carlson, Alex Jones, Nick Fuentes, and Ron Watkins. They know that what they believe in and do is reprehensible to most normal people. They don't care, so for them words and arguments are fluid and meaningless.

God I hate these people. But the last guy ain't wrong. The 1500 GBP steak is only that much because the target audience for it has agreed they'll pay that for the experience. Be that flexing or whatever. Same with those stupid loving "million dollar sundae" or "million dollar pizza" that just put tiny diamonds and rare and over priced prestige ingredients like truffles and caviars till till the price tag reaches whatever. That's just commerce. A big mac isn't worth $10 or whatever your local cost is based on just materials.
