For example in the manga Tima is named Michi and is a gender bending mutant grown in a lab. It's way more about biotechnology than it is robots and labor. The only thing the movie really keeps is the principal cast. The movie takes a lot more influence from the Fritz Lang film, which Tezuka claimed to have never seen anything other than a single still of when he made the manga. I think it's best to see the film as an homage to Tezuka as a whole, seeing as it borrows characters from all sorts of Tezuka manga and covers themes from his most popular and enduring works

Like another huge difference off the top of my head is that in the manga Rock is literally Sherlock Holmes. The brutal fascist interpretation is more inspired by his character in Phoenix

Robot Carnival is an anthology film that Otomo did. I like Memories better but there's some fun stuff in Robot Carnival. It's the anime equivalent of a jam session except instead of jamming it's Otomo and his buddies going insane animating whatever they felt like with the throughline that it involves robots.
