I watched Halloween (2018) for Halloween. It is still my 2nd favorite Halloween film. I'm hearing a bunch of not good rumblings about Halloween Kills, but I'd like to watch it myself. I just don't feel an urge to gently caress with Peacock so I'll check it out when I can rent it on Amazon or whatever.

If we're talking the one with Barbara Hershey, that was based on an actual alleged paranormal incident of Doris Bither's being attacked and raped by some sort of poltergeists. Investigators did go out to investigate, did note some poltergeist activity in her house. Modern analysis into her case points to sleep paralysis which does explain a lot, but not all of it like specific injuries she suffered.

So many supposed supernatural encounters are so clearly sleep paralysis, like probably 90% of all abduction stories. I don’t know why there’s not more good representations of it on screen because it seems like it’d be easy to pull off. The only time it felt true to me was in Gerald’s Game.

I kinda wish I didn't follow the Chucky franchise cast on Twitter because Mancini straight posted the trailer for the latest episode that gave away that Lexy survived Chucky's attack in the last episode. I mean, you can check imdb to know who lives or dies by their episode count but... still. If you're going to do suspenseful cliffhanger endings don't just have trailers say "hey, here's what happened right after that scene"!

I do love that the series really makes the characters human, moreso than a lot of the original franchise where it's like "someone's a jerk, Chucky kills them, oh well!". Or "someone's nice, Chucky kills them, but I wasn't really given enough time with them to care, oh well!". The franchise lends itself well to a longer format where Mancini's characters are given room to breathe. I'm also liking the unfolding saga of young Charles Lee Ray. We even got to see young Eddie Caputo.

I watched Halloween (1978) and Halloween 2 back to back on Halloween night. First time viewing for either of them, and there’s a lot to enjoy in both. It’s interesting to see where a lot of the slasher tropes came from. My one quibble is that it felt like Laurie’s story and Dr Loomis’s story were entirely separate films right until the end.

I also did Ghostbusters because it’s my favourite film and I’ve not actually seen it for some time. Still amazing.

I was thinking of things that are scary to me and a few things commonalities of movies I noticed.

*the visceral violence of some movies where you aren't given a quick death. Scream fits this for me.
*Movies where you have little or no chance of escape, no where safe. Nightmare on Elm street scared the hell out of me as a kid because, you have to sleep at some point. Jason and Michael Myers are easily avoided, stay out of Crystal Lake or Haddonfield. Final Destination also tapped into this for me. Alien too.
*Movies where society/a group of people turn against you. Children of the Corn is not a good movie, but the first scene where the adults are killed sticks with me to this day. Cult movies kind of operate on this level too. Though, with Midsommar at some point they are going to piss of the wrong person if they are actively enticing people, which i know breaks the movie applying real world logic.

I am sure I can think of more but this was my quick list.

I'd say the only things that scare me in movies at this point are really oppressive terror that just doesn't let up, especially if it makes it hard to know what's actually going on. Jacob's Ladder, Hereditary, Mother, Killing of a Sacred Deer, that kind of thing. I've also always been real squeamish with dismemberment; cutting someone's head off doesn't bug me, cutting someone's hand off gives me the willies.

It is. I think they'll need to do a lot more work if they want me to sympathize with Lexi though. She's the worst kind of crybully. I also rewatched the whole series between episode 3 and 4 and it has to be the most consistent of the big, neverending horror franchises. Even the bad ones (3 and Seed) aren't, like, Hellraiser sequel bad.

I should've clarified better, but it was the paranormal investigators who investigated. I'm not sure what police involvement was on the case since it's been so long since I've read up on it.

This is a big one for me. I can watch Freddy or Jason hack people up all day, but watching someone suffer for extended periods of time can get pretty harrowing. That's what makes stuff like Human Centipede so effective for me. I wouldn't say that I like HC, but I at least respect it for accomplishing its goals, even if those goals were to make the viewer feel gross and bad. In a regular slasher/horror flick, the human centipede reveal would be the big act 3 climax, fade to black roll credits. But in HC that poo poo happens 40 minutes in, you've still got to watch those poor people crawl around like that for another half of a movie and it just suuuuuuucks :gonk:

The show kind of went a weird way because it went out of its way to make Lexi as terrible as reasonably plausible to sell the idea of Jake being tempted to kill her but that kind of makes it tough to walk back even though, you know, I don't REALLY want terrible teenagers to be murdered even if sometimes I feel like I do.

With stuff like Human Centipede or Martyrs it's particularly uncomfortable to watch both for the pain and knowing the victims are now helpless and there's no going back. There's no "normal" once all your skin is gone. You're not getting a happy ending after that.

Serbian Film is pretty rough to get through, though knowing it was really just the director giving the big double middle fingers at Serbia's MPAA censorship does help a little bit. Martyrs is probably my favorite 'gore porn' movie because it at least tries to justify what's going on and has a few twists in the story that you probably won't see coming on first watch. Oh no she was crazy and murdered an innocent family. Twist 1: Oh No the family was actually a secret torture family with a dungeon built in to their house. Twist 2: OH NO they were part of a whole organization dedicated to torturing people to find out what happens when you die.

That's another good one for the 'slow death' thing I was talking about, there's like a 20 minute montage of the protagonist just being abused and it just :gonk: keeps :gonk: going :gonk:

Yeah that's part of it too, when Jason machetes someone's head off at least they're done, terminal but not immediately fatal injury is worse all around.

There's also the end where you actually can torture people to the brink of death so that they can witness the afterlife and report back to the living, and they succeed, and then it's all taken away at the last second, and oh christ, what could the answer have been?
And the protagonist's transformation mirrors your own as you de-identify with her and maybe even start rooting for the bad guys, because if they fail what was the point of all this?

I've only watched it through once but I'll never forget that feeling of "ah ye fuckers, you got me good".
