Casino Royale is such a good-rear end movie and a high-stakes poker game being the method he takes down the bad guy works so well. The relationship arc with Eva Green and her betrayal owns too and is well done.

Also, and this is from a YT vid I saw on it, it's the one Craig Bond movie where he is actually smiling a lot which is why it's the best/not mopey.

granted a looooot of them are also just directly propaganda for the US military but that's... whatever. I mean what isn't

The worst part about them is that some people only watch those movies and the conversation is like "Yeah I saw that one too, there sure were a lot of explosions and CGI. I wonder if the next one will also have the main character fight an evil version of themself at the end"

no it doesn’t lol it’s an awful scene. bond plays baccarat in the other movies because it’s a fully luck-based game and it highlights bond’s supernatural cockiness. anyone can win a hand of poker if they get a straight flush on the river. it doesn’t work narratively or thematically. that’s the only thing I remember from casino royale cause it was forgettable like every other Craig bond movie

The dissolving barriers between IPs as a compensation for lack of creativity have spoiled us to the point where we can no longer appreciate a good crossover. Abott and Costello meet the Wolfman 1000 times a day in Fortnite, and they're all doing the Macarena.

I don’t know the rules to baccarat so I’m probably misunderstanding you, but are you saying “baccarat is all luck which makes it unlike poker which is all luck.”?

wasn't the whole deal with Le Chiffre that he had a good enough memory that he could remember all the cards that came up in previous hands, plus what he could see of his own, plus what was already laid out by the dealer, and from there draw a probability of how the rest of the hand would play out

Bond traditionally played baccarat in the books and in previous movies, so switching it to poker in Casino Royale seemed kind of cheesy to me. Bond probably is a glorified frat boy deep down, but I would like at least a layer of Monaco-style glamour on top of that rather than something that reminds me of my childhood friends' dads' "guys nights."

Oh yeah. I met a lot of law school/law firm burnouts deciding to try to play poker for a living between 2008-2012 or so. Is that no longer a thing? I thought getting old just disconnected me from what younger people with few real life commitments can do.

It's this plus nobody knows how the gently caress to play baccarat so it would have been confusing.

Also the bluffing and interaction during the game, Mads Mikkelson crying blood as a character trait is great.

Other than that and poker, Bond had fun, fell in love, got betrayed, got whipped by a rope in the nuts

I guess. I've run into a couple of poker nerds who thought the way the game unfolded "ruined the movie." I don't care much for poker so I just tuned out, but I think it was something to do with the odds of the scenario.

Which is why everyone watches Bond movies. Realism.

James Bond needs to have fun. Quantum of Solace? Goes to dry desert, gets all sandy and oily, very unpleasant. Skyfall? Joints are all achey, unpleasant family memories, goes to creepy island. Spectre? Has overwhelming social anxiety at a Spectre party, gets tied to a torture chair- not fun!!!

I loved the marvel movies and all but they really have no reason to keep going after endgame (yes yes I know it’s about money). The formula is played. You can only really use such a narrow repetitive formula so many times before it becomes unpleasant. And the whole premise reached its logical endpoint. We got to see heroes from multiple movies all come together, we got to see the crossover persist after the first crossover movie ended, and we got to see everyone all charge across a field to triumphant music to punch some evil robots and save existence. All character arcs completed. All dangling plot threads tied up. All main characters retired or martyred. Everything that could be done with the premise has been explored. It’s done let it die. Who the gently caress cares about watching nobodies like Shang Chi and the Eternals repeat what the actual famous characters just finished doing.

I just want to see my favorite super hero beat up my favorite super villain.

Most of the later marvel movie require you to have watched several others so you can understand the context of what is happening. All the characters were drawn up in labs to get the highest approval rating from the audience so there is absolutely 0 character development.

Everyone in that is great, it's a brilliant move to not bother casting for physical resemblance and just speaking in their natural accents.

It's more anti authoritarian imo but ymmv. The movie absolutely slaps, one of those cases where the adaptation is vastly superior to the original, iirc the comic is pretty cringey and gross

Glad I never got around to reading the comic than, but yeah the entire casting was fantastic, I remember at the time a lot of people saying it was a brilliant move to use all these different English accents as an analogy for the different accents found among Soviet leadership.

The part where theyre jockeying for position at thr funeral was fantastic

No I was vindicated in more peeps thinking critically about Joss' writing & directing and realizing he was incredibly bad at it. That he was also a lovely person was not a surprise but less relevant.

Snyder is a better storyteller yes, so are most film makers! I would even hazard to say that some of them who cite Whedon as an influence/inspiration are probably better than he is, tho big time lol I'm not gonna check

A different medium of film release doesn't really sound like a separate industry but out of pity I will give you this one:

Wow! Rip Snyder man, career over! Plus I'm obviously someone who bases their bad taste in art on the popularity of the art and the official authoritative status of the artist, so really, double whammy! :'(
