Ghost of Tsushima has probably handled it the best in terms of sprinkling lots of little things across the map but then rather than drown you with UI elements the game just injects all that into the world atmosphere itself. You may be following the wind to your objective when a golden bird might cross your path, indicating a point of interest nearby. Or find a fox den to lead you to a shrine. In the distance, you may seen pillars of smoke coming from areas where a quest begins.

All of this is shown explicitly on the map should you choose to open it but the game also lets you just embrace the world and have it guide you naturally

I wonder if those work on other players? Probably not, right?

yeah legit the only thing that makes me nervous from the video is the inclusion of "crafting" but from the brief glimpse we got it looks like it's just for ammo + healing + consumables which i can deal with

My guess would be either "no" or "it gradually builds a meter like prior games did with bleed or poison and you'd have to be pretty dumb to let it fill up." It might depend on how invasions ultimately end up working in this though.

I'll be a bit annoyed if I have to hit up an iron ore deposit regularly to obtain materials to repair weapons or something, but yeah nothing fills me with dread right now. It sounds like it's all optional utility gear from what we've been shown.

That's really cool and I hope the open world in this ends up somewhat like that. It's honestly pretty similar to how points of interest have worked in the other FromSoft games (when they aren't covered in crude player graffiti to act as a neon sign to something interesting.)

One issue with the soulslike series is that it doesn't encourage experimentation with weapons, upgrade materials are often too sparse, and it's easy to fall into a rut. BOTW's rules enforce constantly using and abusing your arsenal. It's not "fair" but it's deliberate.

I've always regarded the Souls series as a Zelda game for adults without the puzzles, the combat gives me underlying OoT vibes every time. I think it's a good thing.

Souls games only have so much in common with Zelda, but the exact same part of me that enjoys Zelda enjoys Souls, so it's always felt like an extension of it in some way.

Have you accepted The Void as your lord and savior?
I'll take a OoT-style unrealistically cramped "open" world over slowly plodding for an hour of nothing because the devs wanted to tout a bigger landmass. That's the same thing that turned me on about Dark Souls 1's design, even if it was ultimately flawed and probably had a ton of cut content.

I'm mean I'll still 100% Dark Skyrim, but it'll be a lot more fun if the rides are brief and/or full of things to do.

miyazaki specifically cited botw as a big influence on the world design, but it's not just imitating it or anything. it seems more quite a bit more open than dragon's dogma though

I think Breath of the Wild stinks so FromSoft's Breath of the Wild means "the good version" when I read it.

i mean yeah obviously it's gonna be involved in some form, but it tends to carry a lot of baggage when it's mentioned and for me personally i see elements of other games before i do botw even though i'm relatively ambivalent about it

The 3D Zeldas inspired Demon's Souls, the Souls series inspired Breath of the Wild, which in turn is inspiring Elden Ring.

Been really impressed with the outfits they’ve shown off so far. I hope this game doesn’t end up like DS3 where most of the outfits are loving ugly and/or can only be found in the back half of the game but also only if you fulfill xyz condition that isn’t mentioned anywhere in the game. gently caress that, give me some clothes you assholes.

I can kinda see traces of BotW in how the exploration seems to be more player-driven than driven by the UI or markers, and the presence of bite-sized challenges in the world and sweeping weather effects that alter gameplay and potentially pose a challenge.

Judging by previous games, they're almost assuredly just builds they have prepared for showcases.
