The whole deal with the banality of evil is that you can get liberals to do anything so long as it's banal, and they make up the skeletal structure of every capitalist state. Evil at scale must be banal because it must include liberals in its execution.

My knowledge here is probably just enough to say something really stupid, but here goes: wasn't the post wwII/mid 20th century calcified apparatchik class one of the big reasons for the Mao-ML split? The perpetual revolution somehow trying to avoid the vanguard turning into the political equivalent of a fossilized kidney stone tearing your organs out?

I've posted about this at more length in other threads, but basically there was an internal struggle within China in the 50s, when the USSR under Khrushchev was offering enormous amounts of aid and technical support for Chinese development but they more or less insisted that all that support be used to build China along the same model as the USSR: bureaucratic centrally-planned state socialism focused on urbanization and industrialization by extracting an agricultural surplus from the peasantry. And the Soviet advisers insisted that China go slow and steady because they had firsthand experience of the damage and instability that overreaching could cause. Some CPC insiders were fine with this, and China's first Five-Year Plan went quite well along these lines, but Mao didn't like it because it was too bureaucratic and too focused on creating industry and comfort in cities, whereas the main base of support for Maoism was the peasantry, and because he was suspicious that the Soviets were trying to keep China from advancing quickly because they feared China overtaking them as the heart of world socialism. One big cause of the Sino-Soviet Split was that in the Second Five-Year Plan (Great Leap Forward) Mao abandoned the Soviet model in favour of a more Maoist model of vastly accelerated decentralized development and it was a disaster, and the Soviets were like "I told you so" and Mao was like "gently caress off."
