Like how once you get the ice beam most combat is freeze+rocket, how the scan logs are a pace break so you can read "DO NOT TOUCH THE CORRUPTED ROOM. It also feels a lot more rigidly structured than super, and the only sequence breaks seem to come from glitches and exploits.

Despite all that, i cant really think of many other FPSes that are on an interconnected world that progressively unlocks more areas via skills and movement upgrades (the one that has a direct stated influence from metroid prime is Supraland and aside from that im drawing a blank). Playing this in 2002 must have been mindblowing and i still cant believe it came out that early.

Another interesting thing was playing with mkb and seeing how much of the game is centered around controller and autoaim: a lot of enemies have very rapid movement, which coupled with all your guns being projectiles (thank god for plasma beam being fast) makes hitting some of them easier without locking on, like chozo ghosts, and others that have insanely small hitboxes a serious task without the autoaim, like the turrets or the bugs that pop up from underground to fire at you then burrow down again.

Also i really liked the glitchy creepy music used in the crater site which echoes metroid 1's final area and the music for the final metroid prime fight. idk why they gave it a face but whatever.

the fight against metroid prime was pretty bad imo. though for some reason their using the same animation of samus jumping down a hole at the exact same camera angle 4 times in a row bugs me way more than it should, so that might just be bringing down the whole thing for me. ALSo the time a friend saw me in the middle of the boss fight and said "they shouldn't have made metroid an fps." i wanted to tell him that the rest of the game was more like metroid but i was too busy fighting the boss.

nice job on this. have you played arcade Shadow Dancer? its the best shinobi imo, for my money.

yeah, i like it but it feels like the toughest one so it's going to take some practice. i got distracted after arcade shinobi and haven't gotten back to it.

9. Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice

I really liked it, it's not perfect or anything but I dug the aesthetic, I thought it was very atmospheric, and the combat was really fun when it clicked, which was most of the time. Probably not for everyone but if the trailer looks interesting then I'd suggest checking it out for sure.

Worst grinding was the Red Minotaur. I didn't check the time but it probably took me over an hour.

I only used a guide for the secret rooms I missed.

voice of cards. great game. it is a bit on the easy side, and its not a huge 40 hour game or anything, but it has a ton of charm and fun fights.

hope there is a sequel or big expansion.

Castlevania: Circle of the Moon (CV Advance Collection on Switch)

I'd tried this two times before emulated, and I liked it but always got into a "too annoying now, will do later" mood. On Switch, motivation was no issue, blasted through it in about 6 hours.

It's a strange game. Many questionable design decisions, but I admire with how much confidence they were made. Having to double-tap to run is stupid, but at least they gave you the upgrade to even be able to do that extremely fast (don't have to beat a boss for it) and the enemies seem mostly designed around you not being able to turn on movement speed in the air on demand. This is very obvious in the second-to-final boss which walks and runs at your speed, and for his basic attack stops in place and then stabs with a sword so dinky that you can literally walk away from it. You also get the double jump extremely quickly, so your movement isn't actually that bad.

There is no shop. You have to farm everything from enemies - every armor, the entire magic system, even the basic potions. But every enemy has only two drops, one common one rare, so you can absolutely find out which drops what with experimentation. I think this is what they wanted you to do - make your own list. Be thorough. With the Collection, you fortunately get an Encyclopedia, and even a pop-up if an enemy drops a card, and if you've gotten it already. But again, I acknowledge the design idea, and the purity behind it. In a similar vein is how lousy with breakable walls the game is, I'd estimate at least 60% of the permanent upgrade are hidden behind a random spot you can destroy to reveal a passage. It's not a long game, but they wanted you to really explore it to get everything.

Dumbest moment: when I found out that you can, in fact, slide from the start and don't have to wait for an upgrade. About 2/3 of the way through. So many upgrades gotten way later than necessary...

"Game please" moment: I had to look up how to get one of the cards, which is obtained from a mimic candle enemy that spawns in an out-of-the-way boss room (no reason to ever go back there), but only after a boss about three bosses later down the chain has been killed. For all the respect I just expressed, this one's bullshit. Then I had to look up how to actually use the summon card combos (input a half-circle + attack).


Regardless, the game is definitely fun enough for a replay, and I'm super excited to do it with the other classes. Magician already seems sick.

I've also started Harmony of Dissonance and hoo boy. It seems like a reaction to criticism of Circle, like entirely informed by that, and it's not confidently designed at all. The menus look like rear end. The abilities lack tutorializing (no snazzy pictures like in Circle that illustrate the move). It's garish as hell and sounds even worse. The dash is great but your normal jump is incredibly floaty and slow, and there's no dash-jump. I did finish this before, I'll do it again, but I doubt my opinion of it will improve much now that it's on handheld and has an (admittedly really useful) counter for Relics for each area on the side.
