It doesn’t act as an online bank. I would say more like opening a pre-paid line of credit with every single entity you wish to do business with in the future. And it just so happens that any new or unexpected setup takes longer than the BTC multiple confirmations slowing down the blockchain’s built-in transactions. And even set up in advance, if something happens like a price increase (or Bitcoin loss in value) or extra fees or tax or buying an extra small coffee for a friend unexpectedly you may not have funded your specific wallet address and need to add money from another wallet (confirmed a couple of times on chain, just like a new account) or create multiple new wallets to push money back to funding or to a new “for tips” address. A 16 year old living in an urban area might have to pre-fund and de-fund hundreds of new addresses every day, and this “solves” the slow pace of the blockchain? Much less some McDonald’s coffee hour needing access to the chain hundreds of times an hour at seven (theoretical) transactions per second? With the ability to make Bitcoin wallets on the fly?

It gets more unwieldy as the day progresses; honestly it gets dumber as you consolidate wallets and doesn’t take volatility of coiins into account at all.

This will increase speed and drive adoption. It gets dumber as you try to increase types of transactions for the multiple uses of currency possible discretely and again, is affected by price volatility of butts which can change literally during a transition from buyer’s money to seller’s product. Which means you might need 1 Satoshi and need to create a new wallet for that single Satoshi to complete a deal.

Other parts are actually confusing. Please, try to think about teaching this process(es) to your Mom & Dad over the phone two states over. It still isn’t done yet, and I refuse to think more tonight on it. I will warn you, some parts and use-cases get even more convoluted. :allears:

nonono you don't need to prefund a channel to every shop you're going to, mcdonalds will have a channel to starbucks which has a channel to the clothing store you're going to, so they'll just route the payments through there (for a fee)! we just need to solve the small problem of somehow transmitting the constantly changing balances and channels of every node in the network to every other node, finding the most efficient route for your payment and executing it before anything changes in the network to make your chosen route impossible. maybe in the glorious lightning network future everyone just has a channel to a large central payment processor node and then we've invented a regular centralized payment processor with a marathon of extra steps.

Also, there is no plural when the context is an argument with an individual rather than a group. Somfin shouldn't put words in my mouth.

Even if crypto was secure and not shady at all, it would still be an environmental nightmare that wastes an amazing amount of electricity and produces nothing — even worse, this is happening at a time when we need to be conserving as much as we can. If coiners get the mass adoption of their dreams (which they never will because it’s inefficient and does nothing better than other decades old technology) it will only get worse.

Isn't the Climate Change movement the biggest existential threat to the full cryptocurrency domination over all the other major currencies? As a long as it takes more and more power to mine out a token for the next transaction in the crypto's blockchain, eventually the increased power consumption required would become unacceptable to any regulatory bodies that police excess energy generation and consumption.

Also the secondary threat is the the ability of crypto to reduce effectiveness of large nations to use their fiat currencies as tools to enforce economic and trade sanctions. The USA would not be happy if crypto adoption suddenly meant they could no longer put pressure on the policies of other countries they consider hostile that rely on trading in the US dollar. Of course some would say that would be a good development, but other countries that use their currencies to manage foreign policy would also be displeased.

But since most blockchains are distributed I don't know how the big countries could stop the increased adoption, except mainly thru taxation controls and other means, which appears to still be in development.

I assume China managed it's crypto crackdown by checking power usage and network traffic from their utility customers?

The second part is not a bug, but a feature.

Hello I started posting in 2016 / 2017 when Bitcoin was $3000 that it was worth mining up a few coins to see what happens. Well. That provoked a strong response and a whole bunch of angry posts and debunking. So we're 5 years on and crypto is way more established than it was.

For those of you who read David Gerard's book, have no worries - you can still buy this prescient tome through Amazon or David's website directly. https://www.amazon.com/Attack-50-Foot-Blockchain-Contracts-ebook/dp/B073CPP581/ Remember, remittances and sending money internationally will never work, lightning will never be a thing, and this book will explain all of that to you. Do you know what the BBC thought of it? “A very convincing takedown of the whole phenomenon” — BBC News. loving amazing, how can you go wrong - read this book and you'll be one of those TAKING DOWN this crypto bullshit.

To this day I marvel why David Gerard felt the need to debunk this poo poo so hard, and to be so wrong, and so misguided, and to harm others in the process. But I suspect too much Rational Wiki broke brains, after a decade of debunking everything under the sun one couldn't resist doing this one too. SH/SC uber alles, those IT nerds are going to tell you why this crypto poo poo is a SCAM.

Anyway a bunch of walmart employees (that's you, the SA goon reading this) led by some failed IT dorks (that's you, SH/SC crew) spent 5 years laughing at redditors for making money, HODLing and all that other poo poo. Those redditors now have businesses funded with crypto cash, while the SA goons have a half dozen SH/SC regulars that got some good jabs in, The rationalwiki admin sold 500 books to gullible morons, and one dude that rammed a dildo so far up his rear end it required surgical removal - that person also posts the bitcoin rollercoaster pics that you all enjoy so much.

On some level I think of this as a monument to the something awful forums. My favorite posts are all the goons who proudly acknowledged they bought this dumbass tome to spite the cryto scammers. Enjoy the legacy of your wise financial decisions ;) Strawberries motherfucker, have you seen the drying strawberries pic. And finally. Do you know what MT Gox stands for? Well, do you?

Hey, it’s cool that some people got lucky gambling.

I’ve got zero problem with people making a fuckload off of gambling.

I wouldn’t have a problem with BitCoin either if it didn’t straight up waste the electricity so nerds can run their Ponzi scheme.

The issue is that BitCoin is fundamentally worthless and destructive. That’s it. The killer usecases being ransomware and tax avoidance are secondary complaints.

Nobody gives a poo poo about the US being able to manipulate currency, but since you bring that up, how do you feel about Tether completely not manipulating the “value” of BitCoin with totally real and 100% backed by dollars USDT?

Trading a government with issues for some assholes who can’t even complete an audit is not exactly decentralization.

tl;dr: BitCoin is a scam
